It looks like Microsoft overlord Bill Gates will be rolling out some "important" Xbox 360 news at CES in Las Vegas next week, but could it really be another, HD-DVD enabled console SKU?
According to gadget mag Stuff, that's exactly what old Gates-y will be lifting the curtain on. The "Xbox Ultimate," it says, will arrive in Autumn 2008 with built-in wi-fi, hi-def audio output, 1080p HDMI support, cooler 65nm hardware architecture and a near-silent fan.
Basically everything the PS3's had from the beginning, then.
Even more impressive (if a little unbelievable), Stuff says the new 360 SKU will come with built-in HD-DVD drive and a massive 320GB Hard Drive - perfect for making the most of the upcoming Xbox IPTV service, which Stuff says will also be cemented at CES.
Rather than making their console even more hardcore, we would've guessed Microsoft would be gunning for Nintendo's 'casual' dollar in 2008. So this is claim is, if anything, a little unbelievable.
We contacted Microsoft UK anyway, who gave us a very expected "no comment". We'll be at CES next week to let you know if it's a load of old porkies.
That's not an "important" announcement at all. I thought it was something that would affect existing 360 owners. Including the HD DVD drive by default is (and I've said this before) utterly pointless unless they're also going to support it as a gaming device.
The price tag won't justify ONLY the ability to watch HD movies. Especially when you take into consideration the high probability your nice expensive console will be a nice expensive paperweight in 9 months when Blu-ray wins the format war.
Great. So I go out and buy an Elite for the ultimate set-up, then they bring another one out. Cheers Microsoft, you tossers. Maybe they should have included the hd-dvd etc, from the beginning, like sony (who may I just add got slagged off to high heaven) did with Blu-ray.
They just make themselves look stupid. Bit like me.
I may just sell the Elite out of protest and sod microsoft off once and for all.
No doubt 360 fanboys will be looking at this news with wonderment and joy. Idiots.

What current 360 owner/fanboy would be looking at this news with joy? That doesn't make sense. They're bound to be more p**sed off than the non fanboys to be honest.
Anyway, this is a very bad idea in my opinion, how would having built in HD DVD help MS in their digital download plans?
That would be a stupid move on MS'part. What would be the point? Surely we are only a year or two away before details of the next consoles begin to be announced anyway.
not if it can be used to record tv, download films, games, music and other such things.
recording TV takes 1GB per hour i believe (it does with bt vision and sky plus i think) and they have something like 80Gb hard drives. add the gaming and everything else that can be stored on the 360 i think 320GB makes more sense.
Microsoft and sony are aiming to get nearly 10 years out of the 360 and ps3; considering the ps3 hasn't even been out a year in the uk yet I think it will be a good few years before the next generation of consoles details are announced.
Mostly likely to see new handheld details sooner but even sales are those are doing well.
To be honest who's going to care what the specs of the next generation when 2 years down the line Microsoft will be releasing other models which are barely recognisable compared to the original spec.
I don't own a 360 but I can ask a question to those that do and bought one at launch or around that time. If Microsoft do release the "xbox360 ultimiate" will it put you off buying the next xbox near launch incase Microsoft release newer and newer models of the new console over it's first 2 years?
Nintendo have proved that innovation/gimmicks get the casual gamer, not Highly priced crap that does nothing but confuse people and scare them in to thinking that all their DVDs will be completely useless.
The demand for such a 360 is very small in comparison to other demands being made by gamers (which is what these should be made for).
Also on the HD-DVD/Blu Ray front, things look like making a shock turn. The Hardcore movie collectors are now all backing HD due to its open Region system, better menu system and simple industry standards (Theres around 3 different types of Blu-Ray - with great confusion between companies as to what constitutes to what in figuring out what type theirs is).

Ten years, did you really believe that? Its to make you feel secure in spending so much on a release console. The PC is already pushing technology in gaming past what the 360 and PS3 are doing. Gaming is moving so fast that its even more difficult than before to keep using 'old' hardware. The PS3 may be a beast but it only coped with running UTIII at 30FPS. PC gamers have been living with at least 60FPS in games for a good while. Compare games from now to three years ago and how far they have come. Ten years my bottom. Before anyone whinges (as usual) I am not a PC gamer. I own a 360 and Wii but understand the reality of how fast tech is moving.
The ps2 in into it's 8th year so it's not unreasonable to aim for 10 and it's been widely reported that games are using less than half of the ps3 power. I don't know about the 360 but I always find it amazing how programmers manage to squeeze more and more out of consoles further into their life span.

You damn straight! I like my 360, always have, but I think I'm one of the few (like 20 people in the world) who never had a shed load of problems.
I traded in my launch machine about 8 weeks ago cos it was starting to act up, and it did this before it officially died so I managed to Ł150 for it (sneaky!). So know I've got an elite, which I'm admittedly out of pocket for.
If they release anothe one I'll be well P1ssed off, and relcutant to invest from day 1 in the future...

Hardcore means very little in the end because they are in the minority, Im sure the hardcore supported betamax and used laserdisc, but both those formats never made it big.
If the ps3 becomes as popular as the ps2 that means millions of homes with bluray players already, its a massive advantage considering the cost of standalone players at the moment.
I for one wouldnt be at all happy with this announcement and although it's only a rumor sometimes these have truth behind them.
I got the Elite for xmas and if after only 2 weeks of having it I find out that theres a chance another better model could be out in say spring i'll hit the roof! Adding a bigger HDD is one thing but when you start changing it's key features that's total b******s. Christ I had to fork out Ł55 for a wireless adapter that my PS3 had out the box and if a new improved one has wi-fi i'll go nuts! The HD-DVD drive I don't need i've got a stand-alone player for that but if they switch to HD-DVD games that's a bad move as blu-ray has better capacity for games than HD-DVD
ageary is right, sony were good to get in early with the blu-ray, as they did with dvd. ps3's alone means there are already over 8million blu ray players in homes around the world + all of the stand alone players. Anyone looking to buy a blu-ray player in the near future would probably have to have ps3 as a serious contender for thier purchase, especially because it is so much more, and is future proofed by downloading firmware updates (blu-ray 1.0 to blu-ray 1.1 for example)

Why be mad about it? You got the best model available at the time, so if a newer/better model becomes available later why is that such a problem?
I got an Xbox at Christmas as well (regular, not Elite), however I'm enjoying it, if a new one comes later then I'm not bothered.
The rumours are saying Bill will announce it at CES with the actual launch at the end of 2008. If they announced this 2 months ago, would you have not got the Xbox because a new model is 11 months away?
I don't get annoyed because a new model of my car comes out, why should I bother about a console? It just happens, there will always be something newer around the corner.
Not like the PS3 spec hasn't changed (although, it's now inferior to the original spec... don't be surprised if a superior one arrives before too long)
Maybe this is part of the reason the wii is selling so well; there is one version of the hardware. All these different versions will be confusing the casual gamer who knows little about them.
In the UK at least there is only one version of the ps3 available; although it is now missing 2 usbs, backwards compatibility, memort stick slot and 20gb of space but you aren't reying to work out which one to buy - there is only one.
Microsoft need to have fewer on the market; keep it simple. Core and premium was sensible now with the elite and potentially another one it is getting stupid. The names are even helpful.
How abouut this suggestion:
x360 beginner: a 360 that plays games - that's it no hd player no wifi or hd output or hard drive
upgradable by buying the bits you want
x360 hd - a 360 with the works, hd player and output, built in 360gb hard drive (the size makes sense), built in wifi.
doesnt actually bother me. I've had a 'premium' 360 since launch, and despite it going off for its second repair (lousy red ring of death.. grr. Least it didnt cost me) I'm still happy with it. Even the basic 20GB hard drive isn't an issue; I have a bunch of demos, about half of the Xbox live arcade titles, Shivering Isles, GRAW and R6:Vegas add-on packs and a shedload more stuff and I still have enough room to download movies.
Plus, I don't have a HD TV, so the HDMI and HD DVD doesnt affect me, either. But for those that feel they need to upgrade to a different SKU, well, good for them. Personally, though, I know I won't be, because I'm quite happy with what I've got.
I will be angry if this happens. Firstly I'm lead to believe that by buying the "Premium" Xbox 360, I have the best one. Almost 2 years later I'm told it's actually not, so I upgrade to an Elite at my own expense. Now it is possible this might happen a second time. Well, I'm pretty much done with Xbox anyway so I suppose I don't really care. As someone who hates Halo and isn't bothered with Mass Effect, Xbox has been crap for the last 6 months in my opinion (keeping in mind all the excellent 3rd party games came to PS3 as well, which is the system I bought them for). The aforementioned Elite that I upgraded to has been switched on maybe... 5 times in the last 6 months, and all of those occasions were to watch HD DVDs. I'm a total Playstation convert, after coming into this generation as the biggest Xbox fanboy you were ever likely to meet. I'm sick of the loud, shoddy hardware, the crap P2P Live service, all the add-ons for the damn thing, how restricted it is, the multiple SKUs... basically I've seen how much more the PS3 offers. I'm very disappointed with Xbox at the moment, and I really can't even see the point in owning one anymore if not for HD DVD. All 3rd party games will hit PS3, and all Xbox "exclusives" will hit PC eventually. I really hope all this multi-SKU nonsense comes back to bite them in the ass, and that it puts people off buying the next Xbox as many of you have suggested.

i had a 360 on release date, and the answer to your question is no....it wont put me off....

Firstly I did say it may be released it spring so of course I wouldnt wait 11 months for a new console. 3-4 for a new machine i'd happily wait. Second you can't compare a car to a console, a car can have optional extras but with the console that's never really been the case until MS arrived on the scene. What would p**s me off and bear in mind it's only my opinion is that when I got the PS3 in March 07 people slated it saying why do you need blu-ray/wi-fi media hub b******s etc etc but now when MS could bring out an all in one unit with HD-DVD, wi-fi etc no-one cares. Look I love my 360 best present i've had in years without doubt I just don't want to be trading it in this xmas for a new model because I can't play HD-DVD games without a stupid add-on.
I kinda hope that these rumors are true to be honest. If a new machine of that Spec came out I would probably buy one. I've had my premium since launch day and never had a problem with it.
I can see why some folk would get p**sed off tho cos it must be annoying as hell for folk who have already upgraded once.
Personally I'm hoping that the announcement is that they are halving the price of all SKU's as of February or something
So now my elite isnt going to be quite so elite after all, great. The price will be interesting. Pop it in at the same price as the ps3 and drop the others again and they will fly off the shelves.
If MS do decide to release a more technically advanced and a more reliable xbox 360 that is quieter and has the capability of running next gen disc that can hold more information than standard dvd so that all those gamers that were complaining that in the near future they would have to swap disks half way through a game unlike anyone with a PS3 (big problem there for some people wasn't it)..... So what!
Its not like anyone with any sense couldn't see this coming from half a mile away is it.
Just like there will be a more advanced bigger hard drive and so on... PS3 just around the corner now that a lot of people have panic brought a 60 Gig PS3 (and helped Sony shift a back log of older machines) so that they don't end up with the naff stripped down 40 gig version.
If this is true (and there's nothing to say it is) then I really couldn't care. I have the Elite and it's more than good enough for me. Unless you're gonna rent 20 HD films a day, download and store every demo, game video and XBLA game as well as store every mp3 you own, do you really need 320GB on a game console in 2008? I doubt it.
I would say though that the way things are going with the 360, it reminds me somewhat of Street Fighter 2 and all of it's incarnations. To that end, might I propose the Super 360 Turbo: Hyper HD Edition?
How dare Microsoft make another version of the exact same games machine, but with better components to make it quieter, have better functionality and be less prone to breaking down.
I can't believe that the car/TV/DVD player I own has been superceded by a newer model - the absolute f**kers. I mean… you can buy a DVD player for Ł10 these days, whereas mine cost hundreds. I'll never buy a Pioneer product ever again. That will show them!!!
When I see a statement like 'it will have a super quiet fan' it makes me laugh. If the only noise the 360 made was from the fan then that would be great!
The DVD drive is the noisy component spinning at god-knows what multiple, 24x? If MS had allowed the HDD to be used for streaming game data in the first place then they wouldn't need to keep spinning the damn DVD all the time to get the data access speeds required for game data streaming. Why they didn't just build in the HDD from the start for all models I will never understand. A lot of my reliability issues have been with DVD disk errors.
Concerning the HD-DVD drive. You do all understand that it will also read standard DVD's as well, don't you? You do all realise that you won't be left with a lemon if HD-DVD loses the format war?
The HD-DVD drive is just a more compatible drive that can read multiple formats (obviously not Blu-Ray). Being newer tech it hopefully will run 'super-quiet'? If it does then I think this will solve the majority of the ridiculous noise level currently in the 360. A quieter fan will help but not drastically compared to a new super-quiet, fast drive.

As someone who has recently had the RRoD on his rather pampered 360 I have to say if it's another 360 model don't bother! If you can't get the reliability right please work on that first before releasing another.
I'm waiting for my 360 to be returned, if it breaks again...
it's just my Wii & PC this gen or I might for the first time ever get a Playstation
I'm always late to the MS party I only got my 360 last febuary, then they announced the Elite.
I bought the HD DVD drive when Transformers came out back at the beginning of Dec (very happy with it too), and have been thinking about the Elite upgrade ever since. and whilst I do like the idea of an all in one machine, it does seem a bit late in the day for Microsoft to do this. DVD games look fine and dandy to me, the upgrade to a HD disk (whichever) will be for the next gen MS machine.
I'm all for it being quieter though, I'm lucky enough to have the HD set up with 5.1 and everything looks and sounds sweet BUT the noise the machine it makes is a joke! i shouldn't have to hear my cutlery shaking in the drawer just because I don't want to hear the machine blowing its brains out!
p.s. If this is indeed about Gold member shipbeing free I'd be after a refund Mr gates I only signed up at the weekend......

Just to add something as well after reading a previous quote.
I hope you all realise that MS would never sanction a game that required to be stored / run on an HD-DVD? Right? Come on! Do you seriously think they would exclude owners of old 360 machines from the latest games and content?
A new HD-DVD drive would run all the existing and future DVD format games but would addionally play HD-DVD movies as a bonus (as I said in my previous post, the newer tech HDDVD drive should be faster and quieter).
Just like Windows Copies the Mac, The Xbox is starting to copy the ps3. Infact the only thing better than the ps3 is the 320GB HDD, which by the way is only available from microsoft, while the ps3 can have the HDD taken out and replaced with any 2.5" SATA drive, (of which ive seen a 750GB at http://www.newegg.com for under Ł100!
Ok for a start, this is someone's opinion of what might be announced. If it turns out that it's free Live subscription then I'm sure Microsoft will credit the Gold members with Microsoft point equal to their remaining subscription. Or something akin to that.
As to the Ultimate 360 idea, frankly I don't see the problem. The 360 has been on sale for over for 2 years now. Those who bought the Cores and Premiums back then have had plenty of play out of them.(red ring failures aside, that's a different issue) The Elites were aimed at new buyers, to directly compete with the PS3. They're better than the original 360 versions and will provide much fun and entertainment to all around. So why is it so unthinkable that a year from now Microsoft would release a further improved version?
By then I'm sure the 120Gb drives will be a damn site cheaper, and the 320Gb ones will be on sale, hopefully the HD-DVD drives will have dropped in price as well. Incidentally, anyone who thinks that Microsoft never intended to start releasing games on HD-DVD are kidding themselves. HD-DVD games were ALWAYS on the cards, from the moment the HD-DVD drives were announced.
I've had my 360 for over a year now, I've never had a problem with it in any way. It's a good system and the games are great. I also love the fact I can play all my old Xbox games. I also have a PS3 coming in the next few months, but I have no problem with there being a bigger better 360 on the horison. Or being announced so shortly after the release of the Elite. (MMX anyone?)
Idiots.
HD-DVD games were ALWAYS on the cards, from the moment the HD-DVD drives were announced.
Do you really think the company that wont let developers use the hard drive because it might exclude those owners of a 360 that don't have one, would consider releasing games on HD DVD for an even fewer number of gamers?
i was unsure about which to get xbox or ps3 thats made my mind up anyway!! Master Chief will have to wait for another year
iv 2 360's core all i could get at launch n a elite, imo the core kicks the ps3 bottom, bought a ps3 a few mounths back n it was the biggest mistake of me life its a joke. again thats just my opinion. peace
What's the point of a more expensive 360? Surely they need to be competing on price with Sony, and a Ł100 360 is where they need to be aiming things at.
To be honest the trouble with these small incremental updates is that they tend to bomb, in terms of games being released for them, and never get fully utilised. The obvious example is the Mega CD for the Mega Drive. Load of s**te.
Further back one could look at the Atari STE coming out after the STFM (and indeed 1MB STs when 512k was standard). The problem was that the jump was nice, but not enough to warrant a new machine, so all the old ones stayed in circulation, and publishers couldn't justify leaving them in the cold, so the STE (and 1mb) didn't get fully utilised til pretty late in the day, by which time the machine was dead already.
The variations of XBox cause the same problem. Where a large installed base exists with one variant, it will not upgrade to a new variant if the upgrade is not significant enough. This means publishers won't make games that use the hard drive, or the HD-DVD drive, and the device is not properly utilised. Sorry chaps.
Great. So I go out and buy an Elite for the ultimate set-up, then they bring another one out. Cheers Microsoft, you tossers. Maybe they should have included the hd-dvd etc, from the beginning, like sony (who may I just add got slagged off to high heaven) did with Blu-ray.

i know what youre getting at, i just bought an elite too.but this is how the world works now,the pc community have been dealing with this for years.the basic 360 remains the same its just the bells and whistles which change and are not essential.i wouldnt buy a new 360 just for the hd dvd drive...........hmmmm...no cant afford it.....( checks wallet and frowns ).

Hey wait.. i recognise you now... i remember reading about you in Viz magazine, youre Spoilt Bastard arent you?

Hey wait.. i recognise you now... i remember reading about you in Viz magazine, youre Spoilt Bastard arent you?
That was me who said that doucebag! After spunking out Ł425 in March 07 and updating my gaming catalogue most of the year on PS3 titles (Once I'd paid off the credit card I used for it) I was too skint to get one and while it was a nice surprise to get one, I still had to go out on boxing day and get the Ł60 wireless adapter and the play and charge kit @ Ł10. PLUS i've yet to buy my live sub for the year as well Ł35 (Which i've not managed to get onto due to it being fooked since xmas) That's over Ł100 of extras that a PS3 has out the box.
So look mate i'm far from spolit I can assure you, I just dont want to have to trade in my Elite which my girlfriend bought me in good faith thinking it would probably be the best one for at least 12-18 months! I just think that MS should focus on making their console the best they can and the best way to start would be to make some stable hardware! christ who needs a 320gb HDD, my desktop only has 250gb!
Do you really think the company that wont let developers use the hard drive because it might exclude those owners of a 360 that don't have one, would consider releasing games on HD DVD for an even fewer number of gamers?
Considering that MMO's already require the hard drive, and XBOX original games also need it to work, then yes I see no reason that they'll turn down such a lucrative opportunity a year from now.
Mark my words. It's going to happen. Feel free to bury your head in the sand if you like.
Somebody said: "I got the Elite for xmas and if after only 2 weeks of having it I find out that theres a chance another better model could be out in say spring i'll hit the roof!"

Hey wait.. i recognise you now... i remember reading about you in Viz magazine, youre Spoilt Bastard arent you?
I just think that MS should focus on making their console the best they can and the best way to start would be to make some stable hardware! christ who needs a 320gb HDD, my desktop only has 250gb!
personally i want to trade up to an elite couldnt give a rats ass about this new model tho.DVD is fine for me,but like that 320gb hdd.but aside from that your elite is THE model to have as far as gaming.dont start trippin over this .and even then this is all speculation.personally i wish the news was of MS somehow buying bioware/pandemic from EA.or XBL becoming a free service(we can dream ,eh).or just buying out EA and aquiring all the studios it bought would be good......
It's for that reason that I was steered off getting a 360 I am impressed with the game library and it's (current) superosity in the game and online market but with these many new additions and models it makes thing too hard. I can understand new models of things that are smaller and maybe have another one or two features i.e the ds lite; and its cool to make improvements but if the xbox360 was elite on day one then ultimate meaning only two versions both good on the market i might of gotten one but now there is definetly no point for me. It seems they are trying to put all the features the ps3 has in their system while bettering it. If I was them I would of done this ages ago.
Are they purposely trying to p**s off 360 owners by releasing a newer 360 as often as a newer PC? Or do they think 360 owners will all just buy is.
Also, i think the problem with stuff like this is that so many will just have the original 360. Putting in the HD-DVD drive is good, but to me the main advantage of something like this is the discs, something that can not really be used on games because of the original 360.
than would be great for people who have not bought a 360 yet but suck for people who already own one. i wish microsoft had a plan to trade in your premuim for the new sku and just pay the difference.

that proper made me lol when i read your post mate... props to you!!!!
and the guys response later made me laugh even harder, it reminds me of one of my mates who has to have the absolute best of everything out of his mates..... btw miffed one, it wouldnt affect your gaming if they did releaase this rumour... it will be more than likely to announce the next incarnation of xbox....what a w****r....
What's with the idiots that have to have every little gimmicky bell and whistle they can get for their consoles? Who needs a play and charge kit or a wireless adaptor anyway? Gears/COD4/Assassins/Bioshock etc etc all work just as well on a bog standard 360 with no hard drive and wired pads as any full on bells/whistle ultimate 360.
Cant see the 360 having an hd-dvd drive as micheal bay said microsoft wants rid of discs so they arnt going to back it too much
i can see all the latter stuff being true e.g quieter fan and better processor
Be nice to see a slimmed down model as this is its 3rd year since launch can you believe it
Microsoft won't be going disc-free for at least 8 years. The technology isn't good enough yet to warrant such an idea, until the point that fast-enough broadband is in place everywhere; then it won't happen. The discs will remain, and considering Sony are already utilising the extra space on BR discs, MS would be fools not to do the same on their completing system.

Thank you, someone talking sense at last about this disc free downloading nonsense.Im sure it will come but here in the uk we are so far behind the rest of the world in download speeds its becoming a bit of a joke.

I dont see what's 'gimmicky' about having wi-fi, personally I dont want wires trailing all over my house just because my 360 is upstairs with my broadband connection downstairs. And seeing as the elite comes with a wireless controller and I dont want to be buying batteries for the next 5 years I guess I might need a play and charge kit, it would be cheaper than buying a wired pad! k**b!

It's not the case of having the best of everything tosser, maybe im just used to buying a console since the snes days and it not changing every 5 months. I didnt rush out and get a Slim PS2 just cos mine was an old one. I just think it's unfair to expect people to keep constantly changing or upgrading a console more than 2-3 years. If I wanted that i'd get a PC.
Love it or hate my opinion I dont really care, but for someone to call me a w****r just cos you dont agree with my opinion sums you right up.

k**b? that's very mature
My point was that no one "needs" a play and charge kit, I've been using regular batteries for the last year, and they last a hell of a long time, and so far I've spent less than a tenner on them. As for the wires thing, if you hate them enough to spend Ł60 on an adaptor than really should only cost a tenner, then more fool you mate.
Is this a dumb question to ask but if m$ do announce 'xbox ultimate'. How long will it last before they upgrade again? It seems to me they are releasing upgrades every 6 months at this rate. And if it does include HD-DVD, this can't be good for the consumer either especially for owners of xbox core, premium, arcade or elite versions as they won't be able to play hd-dvd type game discs.
