Sony mulls PSN subscription fee

Monthly charges for downloadable PSone and PSP games now a possibility
Sony could introduce a subscription fee that allows users unlimited download access to PSP and PSone games for a monthly charge.

Sony has launched a questionnaire in Asia quizzing customers on their use of the new PlayStation Store on PC, in which one of the questions suggests a "Monthly subscription plan (1 price for unlimited download)".

It also asks users to choose from a selection of UMD titles they'd "Very agree" to see as downloadable titles, including LocoRoco and Tekken.

Subscriptions are a brilliant idea, so long as Sony gets more than the currently weak selection of PSone titles up onto PSN.

Who wants to play the first WipEout (Oi, I bought it - Ed)? 2097 is what we're all waiting for (True - Ed).

Its funny, because the rumour is that Xbox Live will be free from next month. Remember, this is just rumour.

It's NOT about paying for PSN, it's about giving the option to pay a monthly fee for unlimited game downloads rather than paying per game and if the PSOne and PSP catalogue expands enough it's a great idea.

Again... read the article properly.
theideal on 3 Jan '08
Sorry, but the headline is very poorly chosen. Its a PS-Store, not a PS-Network subscription. Of course some read-lazy people get that wrong immediately.
What about "PSStore may get GameTap-Payment" or anything similar?
DNCDante on 3 Jan '08
MS should do this when they get a few more games on the Xbox Classics channel.
theideal on 3 Jan '08
I wold rather cary on with the current method, rather than a monthly subscription, as most of the games on there seem pretty crap anyway. The only game I have got of there is SuperStardust.
hazahaxa on 3 Jan '08
Sounds like a good idea to me although I won’t use it as I like to own the originals.

Its still a pay monthly fee for stuff most people have, its always been said that sony would introduce fees of one type or another at some point.

They already HAVE introduced fees, that's why your bank account gets a little lower when you download a game.
It's a different way of paying for content, NOT a way to pay for the PSN service as you implied. It has zero bearing on the 'freeness' of PSN.
theideal on 3 Jan '08
CVG I would have thought a new year resolution would have been to stop flaming fanboy arguments over the net but clearly thats not been the case.

I can't see Sony ever charging to play online games but 1 monthly fee for downloading say 3 games a month for £5 would suit more people. Once home finally launches I think more pay per download services will be launched but I dont think they'll charge just to access it.
bmaindj on 3 Jan '08
ideal: frustrating isn't it??

people should read, and yes ok, websites should announce headings better. but to clarify:

PSN is still free, still play online and browse etc, free. When you buy a game, instead of going

"ok i'll buy superstardust £3.99, go to checkout bla bla"

you'll go

"ok, I have paid my £xx monthly fee, everything is free, yay!"
anagi on 3 Jan '08
So in theory you could download all the games you want in one month then be sat waiting till something else comes along.

More about speeding up the releases rather than waiting till its a big enough selection. Nice idea but it seems flawed. Unlimited d/l access. I doubt it. There would be some restriction but would work out better off i reckon.
Fox on 3 Jan '08
I'd gladly pay a monthly fee for PSN if they got it upto Xbox Live standards, however, there's no way I'd pay a monthly fee to download crappy PSP and PS1 games...

I dont think it will be like that. I guess that, like at gametap, you can only use the games as long as you pay.

In all honesty if they were to do something like this it would either

A)mean you could only play the downloaded games for as long as you are a subscriber.

B)see a monthly subscription of about 20quid

c)See a minimum subscription

d)see the word 'unlimited' be replaced by a numerical value.

I wouldnt be at all suprised if Sony are looking at any way possible to recoup costs incurred by running a 'free' network service and this is one of their ideas to do this.

Well that would be the restriction then.

It could be like you say but i know it won't be all you can get for a measily monthly fee.

If it is like you say they won't get a penny that way from me. I like to keep what i pay for.

All speculation at the minute though.

ive bought a few games off the psn so far, usually out of boredom tbh.
although i did play stardust enough to warrant the 4 quid it cost. and i love the newly released poker game. id rather pay for each game by itself, unless of course the subscribption was a tenner or less per month. i cant see them making / releasing 4 titles a month worth having to justify 20 notes for example.

however this brings me onto another point, one that ive made before but noone seemed to notice or respond lol.
i would happily pay a subscription to PLAY online, cod4 / motorstorm for example, if and only if the servers were made a lot more stable, there were admin at HQ to keep an eye on things and make sure everything is working perfectly etc.
is anyone else of the same thinking?
i can feel a poll coming on...

Think I'd rather have it free to be honest with you. Been playing free online on the PC for too many years to count and hardly have a problem with it. Been playing online on PS3 for free since release day and hardly have a problem with it.

Hooray for free online PC play..oh apart from having to upgrade your PC every week....and haing to open port in your router evertime you want to play properly, and being subjected to BADDDDD servers on a constant basis.

sounds a little like the PS3...

Although to be fair...77p a week could buy me a packet of crisps and a small carton of juice!

In fact thinking about it If you gave up smoking for a week you could get xbox live for a year and still have change to buy games off the arcade....

...for even 5 pounds a month for a PSN subscription (which wont pay for better online play or decent service mind you) will effectively cost twice as much as LIVE
teeps1981 on 3 Jan '08
people seem to be putting words into my mouth.
i would pay for servers if they were PERFECT, only if they were PERFECT though, 98% of time isnt good enough if im paying for the service.
you 360 fanboys jumped on me like id said "the sony servers are crap", i did no such thing, i said i would pay if they were perfect. i am quite happy with them as they are now, they too are working fine 98% of the time, but to get that extra 2% i would happily pay.
so while you pay for your 98% servers on your 360, we with the ps3 have the same 98% service but yet dont pay for it.
b0ilhawk on 3 Jan '08
why is everyone moaning? They haven't said they are going to start charging. All this proves is they are looking into it. And even then it doesnt say u pay to play online just get games without payin individually. CVG are gettin a bit wet behind the ears with this sloppy journalist rubbish and not ONCE have they mentioned the new resident evil movie trailer......

Don't kid yourself. There's a huge difference between the quality of LIVE and PSN. So there should be as well considering one's a paid for service and one's free.

Personally im quite happy with paying for LIVE and having PSN for free since I play on LIVE alot more than I do on PSN. However, if Sony did start charging for PSN and brought it upto the standard of LIVE, coupled with the release some decent online games, I'd seriously consider paying for it.

I think if there is any truth in it then Sony will have to beef up the amount of content available. But with a movie/TV service on the horizon maybe it could turn out to be good value. It is still just a rumour.
To be honest while Xbox live is a better option I think MS have also had a huge headstart and a heck of a lot more experience when dealing with online functionality. I think the PSN seems to be improving albeit slowly. S

till MS have the definite edge in terms of software both downloadable and otherwise.

Maybe Sony should encourage updated classics as a seperately named service and continue their attempts to create fresh software. I still am waiting for someone to put a HD secret of Mana with online play out... *shows his starving dog eyes to the big three*

Um...my PC is over a year old and runs fine with every game released between 1985 and today.

And I dont now what kind of router you have, but I never-ever had to change any port-settings to get a great ping, and instead to console games I can freely choose my servers, so if I get a "bad" server it was obviously my fault.

Concenring playing online via psn: I have both a Xbox (right now with a gold-membership) and a ps3, and I dont think the difference between online-play on both plattform is worth paying any money. PSN maybe a little behind considering matchmaking, but its not so bad I would pay 60€.
DNCDante on 4 Jan '08
please keep the ps3 network free as it works well
whatever all the xbox fanboys think the other day I could not download a game demo from the xbox network as I dont pay for any subscription charges anyway the same game demo I was able to download free off the sony one so I bought the sony ps3 version of burnout glad I did as when they eventually let me download the demo off the xbox network it was,nt as good so I made the right choice for that game stupid xbox microsoft network. I hate you pay for everything like music videos and that !!!
ronaco on 4 Jan '08
I get the feeling that people on these forums have been drinking a little too much! This subscription would just be an option. Nothing to do with the online side of the Ps3, i.e, it will still be free to play games online. You can either pay a subscription every month so that you can download a number of games, or carry on the way it is and buy games as and when you see fit. Simple. A bit like some of you lot! Laughing
Mark240473 on 4 Jan '08
right from the beginning when sonys free online service was announced there have been worrys about how they would pay for this.and all this nonsense about the cost of 360s live service, i mean c,mon 77p a week.if you cant afford this measly fee then you certainly cant afford to be a gamer.whatever anyone thinks, xbox live is the benchmark at the moment.
