Prototype first to use new 7.1 surround sound

First game ever to use 'Neural THX' sound, for surround sound ultra-geeks
If FIVE speakers don't quite satisfy the surround sound demands of your TWO big ears, how about seven speakers?

Prototype will be the first game ever to use new sound tech from THX that will get the crashes and bangs of the game pumping out through seven speakers dotted around your room (as well as the separate sub-woofer).

That's three speakers in front of you (centre, left and right), two behind (left and right) and another two speakers either side of you. The whole block will hear that lot.

Using what is called Neural-THX Surround, the 7.1 surround sound in the game will make full use of compatible Neural THX 7.1 home cinema speaker kits, for the four of you that have them.

"Neural-THX Surround is being integrated in an estimated 70 percent of new audio-video receivers, from companies such as Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha, Onkyo, Integra, Denon, Marantz, Inkel and Sherwood," says the announcement release.

So, basically, stop being a tech-shy granddad and get your seven speaker action going.

Surround sound is the dog's b******s, but I think most people are happy with 5.1. This'll no doubt be cool, but I suspect most people won't be that bottomd if they already have 5.1 (myself included).

correct me if im wrong...but isnt the ps3 the ONLY console to support 7.1????

I can appreciate the draw of 7.1 sound if you're a hardcore movie nut with a massive HD projection TV and more hi-fi equipment than you can shake a speaker cable at.

But as far as gaming goes, those channels use disc space. That means more sound and less room for content, which is probably why the PS3 is the only one to bother having it. For most people, even 5.1 is still a waste of space, because I'm betting the vast majority of people only use the stereo speakers built into their TV.

Now if you can afford that extra space (2 hours of 48khz 16-bit stereo = 1.4Gb) then you go right ahead. I'd rather have an extra 1.4Gb of actual game content than 100% "I can point to the exact source of the sound with my eyes closed" audio.

Wooo premature deafness! pfffft just turn up your tv volume and you'll have 9 speaker's or 7 depending on your kit. but seriously why bother ? in all the running and whatever do you actually care if you can hear brick fall behind you or a baby p**s in his dads dinner in window to your right or left ?.

It won't be as big a leap as 5.1 from stereo. I think it will take a while to take off!

The first game to do 7.1 was Lair.

true. its amazing, using my 7.1 system i can pinpoint the exact location of any sound in the game.

Now if i can just get this stupid f**cking excuse of a dragon to do anything i tell it, i might be able to fly there. or near there. or in the rough area of the sound, possibly.

i might even be able to shake the feeling that its actually not a miopic dragon, but a heavily vandalised X-wing.
