Bioshock 2 is as inevitable as our lunchtime Quake III session following the resounding success of the first game. And 2K could be opting for a prequel with the second outing.
Well that's the current talk anyway, with rumour suggesting that 2K sources have revealed that Bioshock 2 will be set prior to Bioshock, and that the new adventure is current in pre-production.
Should Bioshock 2 turn out to be a prequel, we'd imagine that we'd be at least partly dropped into the events surrounding the fall of Rapture, which act as background to the first game.
Although 2K hasn't said outright that Bioshock 2 is in development, last year parent company Take-Two spoke of how "an every-two-year schedule would be optimal" for the release of new games in the franchise.
Bioshock was an amazing game, let down by a few small issues. Bioshock II could well be a corker, as long as they evolve the game, rather than having a revolution.
Please please please! Let it be soon and let it be good!
I reckon this'll be another amazing game, but nothing will ever compare to the first time you witness Rapture unfold before you on that fantastic opening sequence.
I bought my 360 just to play Bioshock and loved it from start to finish. Well, the final level was a bit of a letdown.
Am I the only person who worries that revisiting the same locations, albeit with far more characters, would diminish excitement if you've played the first? The wow factor of the art direction certainly wouldn't be there now, particularly without all the lovely water splashing about.
I never bothered to finish Bioshock, but now I feel like I should. It started off great, but I found it all got a bit tedious. Maybe I'll go back to it after a few month's break and see if I can get into it again...
I think we all knew a sequel to this great game was inevitable but i think i'll wait until they release more details of the finished game before commenting. So, maybe in about a year or so eh! The prequel idea seems to be the way to go though as there is not much they could do as a follow on story anyhow.
A prequel would make the most sense based on what we've seen so far. It won't be out 2009 though. Those initial statements by the suit were overturned; they basically said they'll take as long as they need to do the IP justice, which is good.
Either way, I don't care if it's a prequel or a sequel, all I can about is them investing time to make the game more like the RPGs of old rather than the dumbed down FPS we got the last time. Oh and that they actually explore the story, there was so much material they could have played with.

New city please!
Same locations? My friend, Rapture is a *CITY*. The levels in the first game covered a mere fraction of it.
Besides, how exactly would another city work? The whole point of Rapture is that it is completely unique. If the game were to be set anywhere else, you'd have to get rid of 9/10 of the elements that make BioShock what it is (plasmids being an obvious example), and if you were to do that you might as well just make it a new IP.
I think seeing Rapture at it's peak would be more impressive. Imagine it completely new, well-lit and full of happy people.
Now imagine as the game progresses, those happy people start to lose the plot and do weird stuff - including you. It'd be cool if it messed with your perceptions - getting you to chase, talk to or kill stuff, then having you snap out of it and find out that bug you killed was actually an innocent civilian, or that person you talked to wasn't really there. That'd be creepy.

That sounds f**king awesome. Someone hire this guy!

Damn right!
Bioshock was one of my game's of the year. Ok it was dumbed down, and the vita-chambers really s**t me, but it was just so incredible to go through. If they capture even half of the atmosphere in the next one, I'll be impressed. All that's to be worked now is the game aspect
Bioshock was great in many ways, disappointing in others. I loved my first playthrough and then realised that playing through it again would be extremely tedious as the actual repetitive gameplay was the weakest part of the game. Also my motivation to keep playing (fantastic narrative and desire to see new parts of Rapture) was no longer present.
Am I the only one who wishes they'd just leave Bioshock as a stand-alone title and get to work on some original IP?
I been talking about a prequel all along. It definitely allows for a better expansion of the game, from both a game play and story side.
It could also help in addressing a criticism of mine and give you more allies.
The game dynamics could also gradually change throughout, as there would be visible degredation, less and less allies fighting by your side.
I also reckon you would play a Scientist chosen to work at Rapture, the intro would be near identical to the first game, except you are welcomed and nothing goes wrong . . . at first (a bit half life like! - plus the first few minutes will be all on rails)

Agreed. It had zilch replay value for me too. Using different plasmid combos didn't hold any appeal when push came to shove. Great game though, don't get me wrong, but definitely a one time experience.

You realize the latest patch allows you to disable the vita-chambers, right?
Besides, it's not as if they're new - System Shock 1 & 2 both had "regeneration chambers".
I think it could be interesting if you were a cop (maybe that Sullivan guy from the Audio tapes?) trying to track down Frank Fontaine and his thugs. They could be your main antagonists as you try to get to Frank. Locations could be warehouse districts (fronts for the crimes), shops and bars where the mob have racketeering going etc etc and then the final showdown in Fontaine's stronghold. At first the cop character might be unwilling to use any plasmids but as Frank starts sending some more spliced-up tougher enemies you are forced to use them to be able to compete with them. The game could end thinking you've fianlly killed Frank Fontaine only to end with him becoming Atlas in a not-so-twisty ending!
I love the story and atmosphere. My main problem with bioshock was the difficulty. Knowing you can die and regenerate pretty quickly meant the game was easy BUT the big daddys being bastard hard to begin with to kill so dying about 6 times just to kill one was abit of bad design. Also having to switch between 3 things..powers, photographs and shooting was abit OTT in my opinion. The photography aspect was ripped off another game and i felt there was no need for it. Otherwise i enjoyed it.
Story wise i'd personally like to see how rapture was built, given the size and scale of the city it must of been a world wide knowledgeable event, so you'd think people in the world would be interested.
The technology, i'd like to see more of that in the game. I loved it when you saw how oxygen and heat where created in the game, i don't remember hearing anything about air/water pressure within the games monologue.
New places to explore would be a good thing, rapture claims to be a city but yet the body count in Bioshock was relatively small considering. I'm leaving that due to the fact it is a city so there is probably more people in different areas unknown to the player. Love a back story to the protagonist and to Andrew Ryan. I know there where other key figures in the game like Fontaine and Cohen for example.
Gameplay wise, one of the striking things about Bioshock was its art direction and level design, it was original, awe inspiring and fresh, i want more, more i tell you! I liked the upgradable weapons, U-Vent machines and plasmids. One thing does concern me was that you could mostly only need 2/3 plasmids for the whole game.
But, the final decision of course is with its creators.

Yes I do realise that. They weren't out when I first played it though. Also I know they're not new, I don't see how that affects how annoying they are.
Fantastic! Imagine being at the New Years party when the Splicers first attacked!
This could be very, very cool indeed, (poignantly) featuring the people from the recordings, crowd scenes, maybe even the history of the Big Daddies and Little sisters, and of course, the birth of a certain actress's baby...
