Warner move spells win for PS3, say analysts

Accelerated sales, more third-party support will follow Blu-ray success, they predict
Those all-knowing industry analysts have peered into their crystal balls to see a bright future for PS3 following Warner Bros.' decision to go Blu-ray exclusive.

The move by the film-making giant puts Blu-ray, Sony's HD format, in good stead to win its long-lasting format war with the Microsoft-backed HD-DVD format, and that's ultimately great news for PS3, say analysts.

Mike Hickey of Janco Partners said: "We expect Sony's PS3 product will benefit from an eventual consumer and retail awakening of Blu-ray as the winning high definition format."

He added: "If Blu-ray can win the current format war, the true value of the PS3 can be unlocked, and will likely lead to an acceleration of PS3 sales."

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities was equally as optimistic about PS3's future, pointing at HDTV penetration as another crucial turning point for Sony. Noting that the PS2's success was helped by it being a popular DVD player, Patcher predicts the same of PS3 with it's Blu-ray playback.

"The difference this time is that you can't enjoy the full experience unless you have a 1080p TV, and we are still below 10 percent penetration," Patcher notes. "I think as overall HDTV penetration crosses 50 percent of households (probably late this year), Blu-ray will become more relevant, and PS3 will have an advantage," he told GameDaily.

I always thought that GAMES were meant to be the deciding factor in a console war.
TTDog on 10 Jan '08
The only true "console" on the market is the wii anyway. And with so many multiformat games around now in the long run the extras will decide which one people want (apart from those who "really" know about games - which is a very small minority).

It's sad that this is the way the market is going; it started going down this route the moment cartridges were replaced by discs.

The big factor now is that people don't want 10 different boxes under their tv so if you get several in one box it makes a big different to some.

Games are only part of it nowadays, its also about Online services, Video on Demand, IPTV, HD Disc format, Weather Channels ect.

It's possible that Blu-Ray will be very beneficial to the PS3, if there is real demand for high-def video with the masses.

That is the question. Will the non-tech savvy great unwashed see the benefit of higher resolution video, and thus be convinced to go out and buy their DVD collection again?

Current opinion seems to say mostly no, even with the HDTV owning crowd, but time will tell.
SunScramble on 10 Jan '08

Why go straight out and buy their DVD collection again Confused , I still have films on VHS that I didnt think where worth upgrading to DVD. I am certainly not going to upgrade my whole DVD collection to HD that would be crazy.

I think the best thing to do is wait! Once this "WAR" is over maybe the prices of BluRay/HDDVD's will have come down.

Ł20-25 for a movie I already own on dvd...or even a new movie...

...I THINK NOT!

PS, jimmygoogle said "The only true "console" on the market is the wii anyway." VERY TURE... PS3 & XBOX are "MediaCenters" with a console buried deep somewhere inside!

Most of them totally irrelevant extras, if I want Video on Demand I use my TV/Broadband, same for a long range weather check, HD Disc format is what has seen the PS3 sitting in 3rd place, its a GAMES console, for GAMES.

That is THE most important part of a GAMES console... and so far the PS3 is way behind.

What tosh, the 360 is a complete console, I only use it for playing games.
The Wii offers similar online features stuff that the PS3 and 360 do, but it does it in a half bottomd way, which makes it much less usable.

I hate it when analysts spout nonsense like this, I respect Michael Pachter, but their is no way in hell the format war is now decided because Warner have chosen Blu Ray, there is still a lot of support for HD-DVD, and when you speak to most people who even have an HD telly they are currently prefectly happy with their standard Def DVDs, the difference in picture quality may have movie buffs all hot and bothered, but your average punter will not consider the extra cash outlay "value for money".
funkyjack on 10 Jan '08
I don't agree with the comments about going out and buying dvds again just because of hd. PS3 upscales standard dvds to hd (720p,1080i and 1080p), and does it very well. I watch many standard dvds and they look awsome. I am just buying blu-rays that 1)either really benefit from being blu-ray or 2) when I buy newly released films

The only true "console" on the market is the wii anyway.

While I agree with most that the Blu Ray factor is unlikely to be a strong enough factor to win the console war - I think games will, and should be by far the deciding factor on that, I also think that this 'Wii being the only true console' is a crock of sh*t.

Do you not see it as a problem that the Wii has encouraged third parties to chuck out a plethora of 'mini-game' titles that swap the format? The only 'true games' that we haven't seen already, or aren't badly conceived are being created by Nintendo themselves.

Do you not see it as a problem that one of the main selling points of the Wii is its non-gaming benefits?I.e Encouraging fitness (this fact being further reinforced by the Wii fit board selling 1 million in Japan) and 'brain training'.

In fact, the main purpose of the Wii at the moment seems to be pushing these non-games.

Other than the core Nintendo products, Wii is pushing 'non-games' (Brain Training, Wii Fit et al) and mini-games, which makes your assertion that the Wii is the only true games console laughable.

I will admit that Sony appear to be focusing on BluRay rather than games (evident in the library), but I think for 'true' gamers who want a diverse selection of games, the 360 is the obvious choice.

Personally I plan to get a PS3, which may seem ridiculous from what I have said above, but I do think there is a lot of potential in the console.

It would seem that their marketing ploy has worked with me as I want a BluRay player and don't want to have to pay for a 360, plus a stand alone player for double the cost of the PS3.

I may well get a 360 before the end of the year too - as I think it is a great console already and if 360 came with BluRay then I wouldn't hesitate in picking it up first.

It would seem at the moment:

Nintendo are balancing providing for gamers with providing for non-gamers. and as a gamer, other than the stellar titles Mario Galaxy, Zelda (already on GC), MP and Mario Kart, there is nothing whatsoever that is of interest. and at the moment, the non-gamers needs are winning.

Sony are balancing keeping the Blu Ray in the console while trying to keep the cost down and creating top quality games, and the BluRay side is clearly winning at the moment.

Microsoft seems to have focused on just keeping a steady flow of good games coming to market and at the moment should be considered the only 'TRUE GAMES CONSOLE'.

Hmm... that was quite a long post.

PS3 is only less than a year in Europe and I still think PS3 has great games out already namely Oblivion GOTY, COD4, AC, Uncharted, Clanky, Burnout,PSN games, Warhawk etc. (Fingers crossed for Everyday Shooter which is rumoured to be coming to PSN Store today).

Great year for PS3 and there are excellent exclusives in 2008 too.

Good enough.

I have all consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 and I love them but I see PS3's future is getting brighter and brighter.

Yeah im sure the ps3 will level things out given time, I just wish there was a different controller for it.Slightly off topic i know but having got used to the 360 pad im having a real problem with the ps3 one.Anyway the 360 is the console thats getting all my love and attention at the moment, sod dvd playback lets just play games.

the hdtv penetration he's talking about covers both 720 and 1080 tv's. There's a MUCH bigger number of 720 tv's out there than 1080 tv's and so most people who play bluray films will not see the true benefit as i understand it.

also, can a ps3 owner tell me whether the ps3 is a good bluray player and also when you put a film in does it just play or do you have to go through the xmb to start it?
shellster2 on 10 Jan '08
shellester 2:

on your first point, as i understand it after a few months of research into buying a tv, upto around 40inches screen size, it is quite hard to notice any difference between 720p and 1080i, so people with 720 screens will still see a massive shift from standard.

on the second point, I use it as a dvd upscaler which works excellenlty. And then a blu-ray player it is just outstanding, no complaints whatsoever, and of course there is the added benefit of the fact that BD firmware changes, such as 1.0 to 1.1 can be downloaded to the ps3. You have a choice whether you want it to play on upon insert, or go through the xmb

Well, PS3 is the ONLY blu ray player that is upgradable. At the mo the profile is 1.1 but will be upgraded to BD2.0.

Standalone players can't be upgraded. So be careful.
wildhook2 on 10 Jan '08
to me this is like saying PS2 won the last gen because it could play DVDs. It was about game quality and franchises on that machine. That is something the PS3 is struggling with at the moment and in the mean time the 360 has simply the better line up. Brand loyalty and hype pushes people towards ps3 and the controller and uniqueness of the wii pushes people towards that. I had a PS1 and 2 and a gamecube, n64 etc etc to me the best games are on the 360 at the moment and until that changes i won't be buying anything else.

I bought my phone to make calls and send messages, I don't use it to surf the web or take photos, or listen to music.

Saying the PS3 is lagging behind on the games front isn't having a dig, its just the simple truth... its got a few that are worth bothering with, just not enough to make it worthwhile buying one if you're still undecided.

If you want a PS3 for GT5 or MGS4 then chances are you've already got one, if they don't interest you there's precious little available to make you say "I must get a PS3 to play XXXXXX"

Bizarre.... for someone who owns a fair amount of tech by the sounds of it, you have staggeringly old fashioned views.

Sony Ericsson phones are a perfect example of convergence working (the N95 isn't bad, but not as good as the cybershots)- personally I don't listen to music on my N95, but the photos are really decent (after the latest firmware release anyway).

I was under the impression you can chuck a home cinema system into the back of a PS3 anyway.

Examples of convergence still quite far off the pace is web surfing on consoles (still better on a pc)etc...

All in all, i think convergence is a good thing, as long as the original purpose of the hardware isn't lost (i.e. if a phone started being great for photos but kept disconnecting phone calls etc...).

The PS3 IS dangerously close to losing sight of the fact it is a games machine... or rather it was, i think it is starting to focus back on the gaming side again, when someone in Sony realised they have sod all great exclusive games!

It is indeed - I actually wrote that wrong, what i meant was that the Sony Kseries Cybershot branded are the best (i had the k800 3.2mp) but now i have a n95 which is still good.

I know what you mean about the home cinema system - but for me, the bluray player is the cheapest and you can buy an amp and speakers and stick it in the back of the bluray, while at the same time benefitting from incredible sound when gaming.

I just think that convergence is widespread now - it isn't just a gaming thing, and as long as the main purpose of the hardware is still the main focus, it isn't a problem. Which like i said, Sony have maybe begun to rediscover, but at first they didnt focus on the games and we are still feeling the repurcussions of that.

Analysts bulls**ters more like the only people that decide what wins & what loses what succeeds & what fails ultimately are us the consumers.

Now as for some saying that the 360 is a media centre with a console tacked onto it that remark should be made more towards the PS3 as in the 12 months or even the last 6 the 360 has seen the best selection of games of any of the current formats.

If the PS3 is the only upgradable Bluray player then the format is pretty wank imagine buying a standalone player & only being able to use 50% of the movies released for it thats a bit s**t, unless Sony planned it that way to sell more PS3's as BD players than as games consoles.

If Blueray wins its most likely that MS will release a BD drive for it which would also be updatable via live anyway.

And lastly I agree with some on here why cant we just have consoles for gaming as it used to be even the games back in those days seemed to be of higher quality the main thing that p**ses me off these days is DL patches to "fix" supposedly finished software you never got that back in the days.

That is THE most important part of a GAMES console... and so far the PS3 is way behind.

oh, I see what you where trying to do now, your original post was trying to have a dig at the PS3 Rolling Eyes

Face it things have moved on, consoles are now media centre that play games, added function is all the rage now. Just look at phones, its a phone for making calls, but is that what sells them nowadays Wink its just a part of a the multi functionality of these devices.

But they didn't need to, if I want to watch a movie.. I use my home cinema system, if I want to surf the Web I use my PC... if I want to play GAMES, which is the reason I bought a GAMES console, I use my console whether it be the PS3, 360 or Wii, maybe I'm just old fashioned in expecting a GAMES console to play GAMES.

Probably because I'm older than most, take Jetpac Refuelled for XBox Live... I remember buying the original tape version for my ZX Spectrum almost 25 years ago.

Why would I want to attach a home cinema set up to my PS3? When the one I've already got setup works fine, my PS3 is for playing games (or will be when they release one that where I can't get a better version on a different console)... very old fashioned, a GAMES console just used for playing GAMES.

And isn't the N95 a Nokia phone?

And I'm 23, not old enough to have played 25 years ago, but I was playing Ghostbusters, Karnov, Dizzy etc.. on the Commodore 64...

My Commodore was stolen when I lent it to a colleague, I had to buy one of those joysticks you plug into your TV just so I could play Paradroid again.

that's pretty harsh... mind you, when i was playing on my c64, i only just had classmates, let alone colleagues!

at the time though, it was so good, even as a kid i had hundreds of games: Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, Creatures 2, Sabateour 2, Park Patrol, Hunt For Red October, Bandana City, Alien, The Simpsons vs The Space Mutants... the list goes on!

The PS3 is a solid Blu Ray player, and thanks to the Cell chip its also the fastest high definition player on the market which is one of its big attractions.

All movies play on the standalones its just some of the special features dont play on older machines like PiP, and online polls and fluff like that.

Upscaled dvd dosent come close to BD movies.
and an upscaler does not suddenly make a dvd look HiDef, it dosent work like that, all it trys to do is take the orginal image and try and keep it looking the 'SAME' ie faithfull to the original at a higher resolution. otherwise it would look total crap (and a poor scaler will do a crap job), but you cant add resolution that isnt there in the first place.

First of all, I think you'll find that quite a lot of blu-ray stand alone players can have their firmware updated - If the machine does not have an eithernet port then software can be downloaded via the manufacturers website (think the software has to burnt to disc or something - but chances are if you own an old blu-ray player that needs firmware upgrades via disc you are pretty tech savy anyway).

Also to the people that think these analists dont get to decide how industry goes, think again. I'll use Blu-ray again as an example:
If market analist think that a certain format is going to be much more popluar than another then they make a report out of it. Industry experts see what all the analists think then retail shops pay the industry experts to find out what is going to be popular so they stock the right things in their shops.
So if diffrent analists think that blu-ray is going to do better in the long run, the experts then take this information and advise the retail shops to stock more blu-rays over HD-DVD's. In a lot of shops you may of noticed that the blu-ray section is bigger than the HD-DVD section - not in all shops, but quite a few.

also, can a ps3 owner tell me whether the ps3 is a good bluray player and also when you put a film in does it just play or do you have to go through the xmb to start it?

I've never used it to play Blu-Ray discs, only DVDs, but you can set it to autoplay discs, so they'll start playing when you put them.

I always thought that GAMES were meant to be the deciding factor in a console war.

Ya Agreed, seriously who are these fools that make comments like this, Microsoft dont back HD they just use the technology and are free to change over to bluray if they chose to.

Maybe exclusive blu-ray games will?

They haven't exactly excelled so far.

Uhhh, hasn't anyone noticed the trend of every technology towards putting everything into one unit? Look at cellphones: cameras, mp3 players, texting, games. Cars have mp3 player capability, you can integrate your cellphone seamlessly into your car and make phone calls while navigating via a GPS as your kids sit in the backseat and watch Shrek. People like the idea of media-capable consoles because that means you can buy one unit that does everything, and thus save money. If you look at reviews for Blu-ray players, most of them say the same thing "unless you're willing to shell out a whole lot of cash, your best value for the dollar is a PS3". Having an xbox saved me from buying a dvd player in college and when I moved into an apartment. It's just logical.

The PS3 scaler does a brilliant job with the upscaling for dvds. Much better than when watching them in SD definition.
