Sony's PlayStation Network director of operations Eric Lempel has told our sister site Next-Gen that we should expect fewer, but more significant firmware updates.
"Many of our upgrades have offered tremendous value to our users so I think they appreciate getting these new features as soon as they are ready," he said during an interview with Next-Gen. "We're certainly going to continue to plan on combining features so we can roll out fewer, but more significant firmware updates.
"With millions of users using our products in different ways and connecting them to a wide variety of equipment, there is the potential, on occasion, that an unforeseen issue will be brought to our attention. We like to take corrective action as fast as possible to ensure our users are having the best experience with our products. The best way for us to do this is through firmware updates. We are looking at ways of making this process easier going forward."
More significant updates would be better than there is now. Perhaps a balence of letting the big updates come when they come (When they're ready, no rush) and as it says at the bottom of the article, catch new "f**k ups" as that plonker said in the first post, as they arrive. Perhaps like the new ipods issue?
Hey Sony how about including the firmware on magazine demo disks to save us having to download 120MB files to specific locations on correctly formatted media to find it does not recognise the stupid thing or connecting to the Internet and have it crash while downloading to brick the console
I wouldn't mind if each update was every 6 months, so long as it was of value and had some new features most people would use, we all know we want in-game xmb but when thats going to be is anyones guess. Hopefully home will usher in the changes we all want but i've been saying that since the beginning and I'm starting to doubt whether it will!
The fact that every PS3 firmware update is 120 MB+ is the annoying thing, not the frequency of the updates particularly. Updates for the 360 and its games take seconds but the PS3 firmware takes around 5 minutes if you're lucky and sometimes longer. This is tedious.
What Sony should be doing is storing these updates somewhere on the HDD so they can use smaller incremental updates, that way you cut download times down considerably.
Let them get on with it, is what I say. The moaning minnies screaming for more frequent updates are the main cause of the faults. Rushed never works, i.e, the 360 Rrod. Patience is a virtue that few people possess. Especially on here!
