How exactly did Darth Vader and Yoda end up in Soul Calibur IV? Did George Lucas emerge from the closet to reveal himself a massive fan of the beat-'em-up and came begging at Namco's door for their inclusion?
Not exactly.
Speaking to Gametrailers.com, the game's director Katsutoshi Sasaki provided this rather non-glamorous explanation of how the Force daddies made it into the sequel:
"The thing that I want to make clear is that we make the game for consumers... It's not for us, it's not for the company. When we think about what makes the consumers happy, what do they want to play, what makes them excited about the game, that was guest characters.
When we thought about what guest characters would fit in the Soul Calibur universe, we naturally ended up with Vader and Yoda."
It does seem more than a little odd though. I mean it's set in a medieval setting but now has sci-fi characters? All of the characters are human, except Yoda. Yoda and Vader look really well designed and all, but they just plain don't fit that setting.
Sounds like they're trying to get a Star Wars fighter out of Lucas.

But then again the Xbox version of Soul Caliber 2 did have Spawn in it, and he isn't exactly Medieval!
it would be nice if Namco did get the license to do a star wars fighter, but it seems more likely that lucas arts will do a s**te version themselves, but considering how many Jedi and Sith characters they have created already, it would have a bigger roster than Tekken. general Grevious and the Emperor would make great boss battles

There's always been a mix of human and fantasy characters. Inferno is hardly Mr Normal is he? I'm just gutted that Xbox misses out on Luke's dad as a playable character

Basically Namco are running out of ideas for the series and continuing this downward spiral. Each game in the series seems to be more inferior to the previous one. The first game was a marvel. The second game was really good even though characters'weapons and armour would glitch through the arena when posing after a round. But it was still a good game (best on GC natuarally). Soul Calibur 3 was just an unbalanced mess.
I do agree that having sc-fi characters in the SC universe is just plain daft. Heihachi and Spawn were bad enough but this is now ridiculous. I like Star Wars but not enough for something like this. I know one guy who absolutely adores both these franchises. He'll be in his element. But he does think Halo 3 is the best game ever as well

At least Heihachi, Spawn and Link were balanced into the game. Spawn just had an axe, after all.
Trying to suspend your disbelief enough that a lightsaber and force powers seems equivalent to a guy who is quite handy with a wooden stick is just ridiculous.
