PES Wii release date confirmed

The big football gamble dated for March
Konami has confirmed that Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 will be arriving on the Wii in March, 2008.

So far, the main focus of PES 2008 on Wii has been on the baffling controls and whether or not they can possibly work.

Now though, more info has been given out that could divide opinions further. According to Konami, "The Wii game mirrors the real sport's use of open space and the exploitation of defensive lapses and accurate passes essential in creating scoring opportunities". Whatever the hell that means, we don't know.

More understandable is the point and drag system, whereby players use the Wii Remote to guide their characters around the pitch. Pointing at nearby players selects them to receive a pass or latch on to a through-ball.

Shaking the Nunchuk can be used to perform sliding tackles and send the goalkeeper out to clear a ball.

PES 2008 for Wii features six modes, and includes the obligatory RPG-lite experience point system, where players can upgrade their team members after matches and unlock extra skills. It supports Mii's and works online too.

Konami's bringing the game in today, so stay turned for some serious impressions.

I really like the idea of this. There's been no major reinvention of the football genre, ever, really. It's always been about you controlling one player, and the computer controlling the rest. This sounds like you'll have much more control over the team as a whole, making sure that players go where you want them to. At the moment, the most frustrating thing about football games is that you pass the ball, and either they pass to the wrong player, or the player you're passing to does something stupid, like stand still while another player runs for the ball. To be able to accurately say where you want the ball and the player to go would really open up the game tactically. I just don't think this should be called Pro Evo, it seems like too much of a reinvention.

I disagree, take 1 awful game add 1 gimmicky pointless and awkward control system and you have PES08 on the Wii!

I disagree. Awful game, thats your opinion, but theres a few million who would disagree with you there.

Im not sure if you've seen the videos, but PES Wii is one of the first games in which the point control is absolutely anything but gimmicky. Its fully integrated and necessary and if it works it'll be a far superior football gaming experience. Whatever your opinion is, if they get it right then PES on the wii will give you control over your team as no football game has yet - Fact.

Of course, the key phrase there is, "if they get it right". Here's hoping.

Your totally missing my point, I much prefer PES over Fifa anyday but this years abortion of a game was a complete letdown with the most horrendous online play on both 360 and PS3 (even after the update), if konami can't get it right on the 2 'real' next gen machines then they've got no hope on the Wii. When I said gimmicky I meant the Wii remote full stop not point and click control (although this a dubious control system for a football) Its not a fact that point and click will deliver the best unique footballing system thats merely your opinion.

I wouldnt say the wii remote is gimmicky at all. That tends to be the opinion of most of the people that cant accept any kind of progression on the control front.

The remote has actually MADE games like SSX Blur, Mario Galaxy and Metroid. Its taken those kind of games to a level previously impossible due to the limitations of the controls.

I hope the remote can do the same for football games too. If it allows you to move the player on the ball, whilst also sending a striker on a run to draw a defender whilst you send your centre midfielder into the box to recieve a pass in open space, then that isnt a gimmick - its genius.

To be honest though, Im not too convinced by what Ive seen and heard. From my understanding you will control the player on the ball with the remote, pointing in the direction you want him to run. I really dont like this Idea and have no Idea why they havent mapped those controls onto the nunchuck. Then you could use the remote to send other players on forward runs. I think if its all on the remote, it might be too difficult and confusing.

Its going to be confusing at first whatever way you look at it cos its re-inventing the genre, but hopefully they'll pull it off.

I would also like to respond to the point that 'they haven't done a good job on the REAL next gen consoles, so what hope for the wii?' Well, which format does it look like they've put more effort into? Earlier in the Wiis life this would have just been a port of the PS2 version. It seems 3rd parties are taking notice of the wii now though, hence they've made a new version from the ground up for the most successful next gen console.
