New Megadrive game in the works

...by some lads with crazy homebrew skills
The word on the web today is that the Megadrive - which has been a deceased format for many years now - will be getting a brand new game release later this year.

Only, it isn't a game by Ubisoft or EA or anyone you may have heard of - it's being done by a group of ultra-hardcore Sega fans, who just refuse to let the 16-bit era go.

Putting all their homebrew skills into the project, the new game, titled Pier Solar, is a fully-fledged Japanese-style RPG made from scratch for Megadrive.

The programmers, who say the project originated from "the Sega homebrew community of Eidolon's Inn in 2004" (presumably a website), say the game will be release on a proper cartridge and Sega CD later this year.

Check out the screens on their official site - it actually looks pretty good. They must have some serious spare time on their hands.

We wish we could make our own games. If we could it'd be one that lets you steal cars, punch people and pick up hookers. Oh, wait...

"presumably a website"

Do some research CVG... Eidolon's Inn has been online for over 10 years now as a retro gaming community. A simple Google search for the term could have told you that even if you just hit "I'm Feeling Lucky"!

I don't quite know why that prompted me to rant to that extent, but seriously I've been a reader of your magazine and website through the years and thought you guys were better than that kind of journalism.

If they release a .bin version for emulators then I'd quite happily pay for the privilege!

And if it's anything like Story of Thor, Shinning Force or Landstalker then it'll be better than the entire PS3 catalogue to date.

That's mad! A new Mega Drive game after all these years. I wonder how they sourced the cartridges? I might actually buy a copy depending on what they ask for it.
This news comes just as I've been getting into a bit of a retro buzz. I hooked up my Mega Drive and Dreamcast a few weeks ago and I'm still having great fun. Micro Machines 2 in 4 player mode on MD is the highlight so far. The J-Cart... genius.
Ordered a Sega Saturn off eBay last weekend to complete my retro Sega collection, I never got one when they were originally out and I've never... this is hard.. I've.. never played Nights. Nope, never. But it's on it's way! Very Happy

There was a Mega Drive game released in 2006 called Beggar Prince. This also came in a proper case and cartridge as I bought it last year. Sure the website was www.beggarprince.com

That is pretty cool i agree. Hope they're not planning to retire off the profits though.

get panzer dragoon zwei, and panzer dragoon saga as well! AMAZING!

Yeah I'm with vercetti, love my Saturn, good luck getting Saga though, I recently sold my copy for near enough £110!

In related news, the next Linkin park album will be released only on 8-track tape.

No one cares about Linkin Park anymore, their last album shoulda been released on 8 track, it was awful. Their first 2 efforts, amazing. However, back on track, good stuff, might start getting the retro-machines back out like.

the saturn was the best console ever. and most under-rated. tons of quality games.

get fighting vipers and steep slope sliders. two great obscurish (and exclusive) games for it. nights is amazing too! if it works on ps3, im getting the ps2 version when its released in feb(import).

get panzer dragoon zwei, and panzer dragoon saga as well! AMAZING!

They made a Japan only arcade conversion of Fighting Vipers for the PS2. The PSone got SSS sequel.
Fighter's megamix was pretty solid for the Saturn.

I think I may actually have to buy this when it comes out, I love my sega, it was my first console that I actually owned, i just wish Quack Shot would come out on the Wii's VC cause that would be so cool!

You're on your own with that one Distant... don't you read the thread or do you just play devils advocate for the sake of being a k**b!?

I'm just glad I bought the game when it when it was released for a mere £30. And no, I'm never selling my copy! I like the game too much for that. Yep, I love my Saturn too... Great days!
