Bioshock breaks records

A records twelve nominations for 2K's shooter at this year's Interactive Achievement Awards
Even more awards look set to be strewn atop 2K Games' excellent Bioshock, with the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences revealing a record breaking 12 nominations for the shooter in its 11th Interactive Achievement Awards.

The acclaimed underwater blaster is up for Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Character Performance, Story Development, Original Music Composition, Soundtrack, Sound Design, Game Design, Innovation, Action Game of the Year, Computer Game of the Year, Console game of the year and (phew) Overall Game of the Year.

It might be time for 2K to get a bigger trophy shelf....

The awards will be taking place at the D.I.C.E. summit on February 7 in Las Vegas (we're we don't want to be returning in a long, long time).

A well deserved nod to the much loved shooter, we reckon. Will it be able to clear the lot though, or will 2K do a Craig David and come back with bugger all? We'll keep you posted.

One of the best games I've played for a long while. Actually had some thought behind the storyline for a change...

You do know he can just say call of duty 4 lol. And anyway i agree partly with his comment i enjoyed the first half before u kill Mr Ryan. After that it turned boring and droal.

COD4? *sigh* pile of linear s**te.

Not sure about whats innovating about Bioshock, its predecessor System Shock 2 is quite similiar in terms of gameplay.

The aware is well deserved for art direction, sound/music and story telling. It was a very story based driven game, the sound and music was amazing and fitted well the art direction is probably the best i've seen to date.

Flame me all you like, but don't bring up COD4, purely an online FPS, if it was a stand alone FPS game you'd find it in the garbage pile. :]

COD4 is good but it really isnt as good as everyone says, Bioshock for me last year was a standout.

Thats very nice for 2k, but i hate these kind of award thingys and everything associated with them. At the end of the day, they mean nothing at all!

No. Not it is not.

COD4 is the most overhyped piece of garbage outside of the Halo series. Beyond the fact that it's far, far, FAR too short (you should *not* be able to complete a full price game in a single afternoon or evening), it's also way too linear (admittedly a problem with many recent FPS'), and the gameplay is sub-par to say the least.

Like Halo, there are countless other FPS' (particularly on the PC) that simply beat the s**te out of COD4.

looks like everybody beat me to it! COD4 is by far a superior game but the longevity of it with faultless online play. i play this without fail every single day. that has to say something toward the quality of the game. i have all 3 systems and no game has grabbed me like cod4. bioshock as a FPS with no online play in this day and age is unacceptable. there was no replay value in it as it became so dull so quickly. oh! i have a pre-production copy of Resi 5 on my 360 which I received in December 07 which is prety good Wink

No. Not it is not.

COD4 is the most overhyped piece of garbage outside of the Halo series.

Outside of the SAS missions maybe. But the SAS missions were some of the best ive ever played on a game.
rabbit0147 on 18 Jan '08
Its simple maths

Bioshock = Brilliant
COD4 = Even more brilliant

To have a great life you must experience both

Sorted

Its a well deserved award. I thought Bioshock was GOTY for me with Mass Effect coming a close second.
These people that claim COD4 or Halo 3 are the best are just one of many sheep following the crowd.
COD4 especially is overhyped and I have no idea how it got the scores it did. The single player can be finished in 6 hours. Its linear and doesn't feel like COD at all. Just feels like a Rainbow Six game. The online is solid but still not as good as the likes of Halo 3.
Bioshock however had one of the best single player experiences I've had in a FPS for along time. The story twisted and turned, production values were extremely high, plasmids were great and you also had the choice to play the game how you morally wanted and the ending would reflect that. The only negative was a lack of online but I fear the single player would have suffered if it was included...

Excellent game. Not without its faults, but in terms of characterisation, setting and story (telling), few FPS games even come close. Incredibly ambitious and solidly crafted. They deserve the awards.
Mogs on 18 Jan '08
@ChazG93

IMO, I don't think Mario did enough to deserve game of the year.
finty13 on 18 Jan '08
Bioshock was one of the many awesome exclusives for the 360, it deserves every bit of credit it gets.
hollywood111 on 18 Jan '08
Bioshock was good, but story-wise, I don't think it was that incredible. There was no emotion or enough characters included in the game. After the only big twist, Bioshock also starts to go downhill and the last Boss was just p**s easy. But I'll give it credit for having some great gameplay and graphics. It deserves awards for that I guess, but how can some people claim that the story in Bioshock is the best this year, seriously, has anyone heard of Mass Effect? Absolutely perfect, and the plot is so, so, sooo much better than Bioshock with realistic and emotional characters and a much more deep mature storyline. I'm not saying Bioshock is garbage, but it doesn't deserve all the criticism. It's no where near as perfect as some people would have you believe. Oh and although CoD4 is really short, I thought it was a much better game than Bioshock. Final Words: for a game that does everything superior to Bioshock, buy Mass Effect, if you don't have it already. If you just want to stick to the regular Linear FPS, buy Bioshock, if you don't have it already.

It's not a 360 exclusive.
Mogs on 18 Jan '08
Bioshock was a good single player game but since I completed it I've never touched the box again.
voodoo341 on 18 Jan '08
Can't win either way really though, can they?

Instead of going with the mainstream Wii Sports that seems to win awards even though it's hardly a game with substance, they've gone with more of a 'hardcore' game. I put 'hardcore' not only because I hate the word, but it's more of a gamers game. If that makes any sense.

Nice to seem 2K getting nominated but they've won nothing yet and I wonder if it was voted for by the gaming public would they win? Wii sports picked up a pile of awards at the gaming awards recently even though it's a collection of poor mini games.
