2008: The PlayStation Evolution

Article: How PlayStation will own 2008
Since the release of PSP, Sony's been about creating platforms that aren't just for gaming. Right now, both the PSP and PS3 are great for playing back movies, music, and displaying photos when you're taking a break from button-bashing madness. Here's how Sony plans to turn its PSP / PS3 combo into a real force to be reckoned with in 2008.

Sony has huge, on-going plans to evolve and enhance what both PlayStation platforms can do. It starts with PS3 becoming the centre of all your 'digital lifestyle' and feeding that down to the portable PSP. So much so that Sony hopes you'll be using a PlayStation branded product as part of your everyday life.

We're all in it for the games but with all these developments coming to our consoles, we're happy (and rather excited) to embrace whatever other developments Sony may have. Here's what we've got to look forward to in 2008.

PlayTV - TV tuner/recorder

Sony revealed at the Leipzig Games Convention last September its plans to turn PS3 into a digital TV receiver and recorder with the new PlayTV service.

Now, if you've got Sky Plus already you probably won't give a damn. But with the ability to pause live TV, and to record programs onto the hard drive for later viewing, PlayTV is a luxury that many of us will be looking forward to.

And for us gadget-loving types, it gets even cooler when you consider PS3's Remote Play connection with PSP. You'll be able to access all your PS3's recordings on your PSP via Wi-Fi internet, so you could be in India beaming the latest episode of Coronation Street to your portable. Isn't that your dream? You know it is.

This is big bananas for the PS3 as a platform too, though. The phenomenal success of PS2 was partly thanks to the legions of people who bought it simply to use as a DVD player - the uncles out there that considered the game-playing part a mere bonus.

Those same people will be picking up a PS3 for its affordable, upgradeable Blu-ray capabilities as the population converts to HD entertainment, and the inclusion of recordable digital TV is, for those people, another crucial reason to buy the console over a dedicated Blu-ray player.

Hopefully Sony will keep the price of the receiver nice and low, so it can appeal to those same people, who tend not to like buying add-ons for consoles. If you're interested in PlayTV, you've got to watch this movie.

Home

Sony is taking its bloody time with this one, but it insists that the virtual world for PS3 has to be nothing short of perfect before it's released. Of course it won't be, but the firm's aiming high with this one.

Home is one of those things that, if done right, could have A-bomb-like impact on PS3, bringing the PlayStation community together with a level of virtual interactivity not available on any other console. It'll give PS3 owners their own virtual space that could become as precious to them as the MySpace and Facebook phenomenon of the internet. Sony wants it to be more of course, but one step at a time.

It could become the place you spend time in everyday, searching for new content, meeting other people and making Xbox Live feel like a relatively shallow, empty experience faced by nothing but menu screens.

Home could be incredible. But if done wrong - if it doesn't run smoothly, connect gamers the way it promises to, feature all the constantly-added content or be easily personalised - it could just become another ignored icon on your XMB menu.

First impressions though are extremely positive, and we can't wait to get our hands on it for ourselves. Here's hoping it doesn't turn into a breeding ground for sub-human behaviour. Like Xbox Live is becoming.

Go! Explore - GPS on PSP

None of us have TomToms in our cars. It's got the worst name for a gadget ever, and the three-figure price tag is a lot to pay for fancy road maps that point you to the shops. They only end up getting stolen anyway.

So Sony unveils Go! Explore for PSP, which will be cheaper, smaller and more convenient than a dedicated machine. Suddenly we're a lot more willing to let the wonders of satellite navigation technology into our lives. In fact, we're actually looking forward to it.

PSP will become something that we'd actually carry around with us for its directional abilities. We're waiting to see the full service in action but having a UMD dedicated to London town or another European city could put an end to getting stung at dodgy restaurants because you couldn't find the one you wanted.

Skype

If GPS support isn't already good enough a reason to carry about your PSP everywhere, how about the ability to use it as a phone over the internet?

Skype, a free voice-over-IP (VOIP) program currently used by PC types, will allow PSP owners to contact each other for free, using a microphone attachment that'll come with the software. As long as you're in range of a Wi-Fi access point, you're good to chat as long as you like.

You can call real phones from it too, although that'll cost a little - but it should be reasonably cheap. The only major downer is that Skype will only work on PSP Slims. Owners of the older model - Sony's loyal early purchasers - will miss out on it completely, or be forced to make the upgrade. Thanks for that Sony.

Profile 2.0 Blu-ray support

A slightly less significant but nevertheless noteworthy part of PlayStation's evolution, particularly in 2008, is the expansion of PS3's Blu-ray playback abilities.

As we recently reported, it's ironic that not only is PS3 one of the cheapest Blu-ray players on the market, but it's also the only future-proof player.

Profile 2.0 Blu-ray features will be launched later this year, which will allow users to download new content for their films, including trailers, features and ringtones.

But most of the dedicated Blu-ray players on the market to date lack support for internet connection, rendering them completely incapable of supporting the internet-centred features of Profile 2.0.

So as you're downloading all the sweet Blu-ray content of joy on your PS3, you can laugh in the face of your rich uncle who bought a first-generation Blu-ray player for £1000 that can't do any of it.

Sony is already part of my everyday life, i am ashamed to say.

But if they really want to take over everything, the Playstation 3 being a grill is a huge possiblity still.

"Sony are going to own 2008."

Wow, they really want us to buy lots of Blu Ray movies, dont they? Wink

This shows where Sony has gone wrong, not how they're going to get it right.
They've forgotten about the games.
Railgun_Sniper on 26 Jan '08
The whole concept of it being a PLAYstation has clearly been lost on them. Maybe they should change the name to the "watch-listen-download-navigate-and-grill-station".
DAEDALUS79 on 26 Jan '08
The Wii proved that there's a huge market out there for games machines, a far bigger one than the home entertainment hub thingy Sony are aiming at.

And is it just me, but does "Home" look like the Ikea of Cyber-Space?
ted1138 on 26 Jan '08
Wow! what an impartial article! Does the PS3 need a tv tuner? Does the psp need a sat nav when nearly every phone that comes out has it? Blu ray is now coming into its own but 75% of the extra s**t it does I'm not interested in
the monk 21 on 26 Jan '08
If people would take the cell phone away from the side of their head for awhile they might actually learn how to get around the town they live in without the need for GPS. Who are all these people who can't find their way to the restaurant? Learn how our address system works, it's not that hard. Didn't seem to be ANY mention of how games play a part of Sony PWNING 2008. Am I to pay $400 for a PS3 so I can play HOME? I can get The Sims for less.
horngreen on 26 Jan '08
There's so little 'playing' in that list of up-coming features that it's a wonder Sony haven't changed the name to something like 'Watchstation' or 'Everything-including-the-kitchen-sinkstation'.

That said, 2008 is looking better for Sony than 2007 with some bigger games coming out around the corner, but this article spends too much time focusing on stuff that's not really important to playing games.

I admit that there are some cool features, but I don't think average Joe will buy a PS3 or PSP for them.

Also, the opening sentences of this article says:
"Since the release of PSP, Sony's been about creating platforms that aren't just for gaming. Right now, both the PSP and PS3 are great for playing back movies, music, and displaying photos when you're taking a break from button-bashing madness."

Has anybody noticed that since the release of the PSP and Sony's decision to create platforms that aren't just for gaming, that they've become less successful? Their first 2 consoles trounced Nintendo and Microsoft, but since Sony have tried to take a 'Everything' approach to their platforms, Nintendo and Microsoft have trounced Sony (in sales)... Just musing.

The ability to record video to hard drive and watch on a PSP is not functionality I want from a console, and whilst it is indeed a very nice feature, I'll stick to my TV tuner and 80GB iPod.

Playstation Home is a great-looking concept as well, but it's really a means to an end, like navigating menus to listen to music on your iPod (As in; the star attraction is listening to your music; not 'getting to' the music, in the same way that organizing a game is not the main attraction; playing an online game is). The real point of online is to play games with people online (duh). Whilst Home is great fun and quite intriguing in itself, it's just a means to an end of finding your mates to play a game online. At the end of the day, if Home comes out but there's no game that can match Halo in terms of multiplayer experience, I'd take Xbox Live with Halo over Playstation Home. (It's sort of hard to articulate what I'm trying to say, but yeah...)

Anyway, hopefully this year will be better for Sony.

Hence this begs the question how many ps3 were actually bought for games and how many for just the blu-ray movie player.

I will have my PS3 soon so which ever of the 3 systems wins I'll be ok. Although I hope they all do very well from a gamers point of view.

printing advertisement crap (so called "reviews"Wink from PS3M is bad enough, but talking s**t about all of the competitors of sony and talking about them as if they are "nice" just smells crappy, bribed and shamefull.. you are suppose to rewiew stuff fairly
but then again if one add the fact that anyone other than idiots and fanboys will believe all the stuff in this article then it makes it less "bad"...

but if you get more STALKER clear sky stuff then it is forgiven.... Laughing lol

And the whole point of the PSP is 'portable'?

I can't wait to see a TV tuner or GPS attachment sapping away at the already crap battery life....and then everything else needing Wi-fi...ultimately you end up with a product that isn't entirely mobile.

And you really think you're going to stream video from a PS3 to a Wi-Fi/internet PSP??? Waste of time over our crappy slow broadband links.
Paradaz - UK on 27 Jan '08
Yeah, that's great, Sony. So, where are the games?

*looks at his PS2* that machine has given me some of my best gaming moments over the past 8 or so years. There is no reason what so ever for me to buy a PS3 at present. Maybe when they finally unleash FFXIII and God of War. But until then, I'll use the 360 for my multi-format needs.

ITS MEANT TO PLAY GAMES YOU IDIOTS, WHY DONT YOU SPEND MORE MONEY AND THOUGHT ON GAMES RATHER THAN A CRAPPER VERSION OF MYSPACE. "HEY LOOK NOW MY PLAYSTATION ALSO DOUBLES AS A TOILET, NOW I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE A PS3 DEVELPOPER BECAUSE IM CONTRIBUTING THE EXACT SAME THING! LOL! ILY! MYSPACE ROCKS OXOX"

dont give into this bulls**t...

NG_21 lists Timesplitters 4 and Haze as exclusive games. Bzzt! Incorrect. First of all, According to IGN, Haze is a timed exclusive; then it will come out on the Xbox 360.

And as for Timesplitters 4, Well, that's probably coming to Xbox 360, PS3, and possibly even the Wii:

Unofficially, I can officially say that we're definitely looking into it .

As of Now, Free Radical Design have only slated TS4 for release on 'Next Gen consoles', so to assume it's a PS3-exclusive is quite a stretch of imagination. Free Radical have always released their games on all t platforms from Timesplitters 2 and up; I see no reason they'd defect to Sony only.

Pro-Tip: research claims before you make them.

I am actually considering buying Sky+ (I have standard sky atm) so if Sony had a similar service on their PS3 I'd probably plump for that instead as I do intend to get one at some stage...

So ther is some potential in this, any extra reason to buy the console is good I guess, but they really could use a lower price point and some more exclusives.

Also I am a bit concerned the 40Gb Hard drive is a bit small for recording TV...my DVD HD recorder has 160Gb and it's about half full which means on the PS3 I'd have to do quite a lot of juggling what is saved etc.
funkyjack on 27 Jan '08
The whole concept of it being a PLAYstation has clearly been lost on them. Maybe they should change the name to the "watch-listen-download-navigate-and-grill-station".

Actually the name PLAYstation is very fitting, because it PLAYS games, PLAYS movies, PLAYS music, PLAYS photo slideshows.

The Wii proved that there's a huge market out there for games machines, a far bigger one than the home entertainment hub thingy Sony are aiming at.
And is it just me, but does "Home" look like the Ikea of Cyber-Space?

Yes there is a huge market for a games only machine, they are called girls and children. I'm sorry, but even though I love my Wii, there are too many kid/girl games for it.
Ther is also a Huge market for a multi tasking machine like PS3 and Xbox.
As someone who owns all three, I play more games on my Wii, but over all I use the PS3 the most.

Home isnt going to be everyones taste, I am not into this cyber friends/myspace type thing, but home does have a few ideas impkemented that will at least make me download it and try it.

IT IS FREE, so please dont bitch about it, until youve tried it, there really is no excuse not to try it when it (finally) arrives
nuggit3000 on 27 Jan '08
I will say this to Sony's credit: At least they're finally starting to give the PS3 a proper identity & are showing some vision with where they want to take it. Up until this point, it has definitely tried to be a jack of all trades, but a master of none. They're essentially trying to make a glorified PC dressed up in cool styling & accessible interfaces.

But it's virtual, it could be anything! so why make it look so dull? Confused

And not everyone can take advantage of all the features of the PS3, so that cuts down the potential market for it, which means fewer sales. Where as everyone has a telly, so everyone can fully exploit the Wii. And yes, I know the PS3 and 360 work on regular TVs, but lots of people out there don't know that, do they?
ted1138 on 27 Jan '08
I am not going to hide the fact that I think home is a white elephant. I'm sure loads of PS3 users will initially thinks it rocks and is the best thing since sliced bread. Then over time i can see that it will start to p**s you IF you have to spend say 30 seconds walking to the 'cinema' to see a movie trailer. Or walk another 30 seconds to a publishers 'home shop' to download a game demo. Before you know it you'll be spending more tme wandering around home than playing games. Which leads onto the thoughts of game publishers. Let's just say that Home is the best thing since sliced bread after all and loads of ps3 users are spending all their time in there chatting, and dong stuff, everything but playing games, games that they have to pay for, not the ten pin bowling game i've seen in screenshots. game sales for ps3 drop because home is such a greta place to be.

I just can't see Sony pleasing either the gamers or the game publishers.

but at least ps3 owners will get quite a lot of good games this year.

Don't mean to be stirring, but that's not surprising coming from you. I've signed up today and almost all of your posts I've seen put the PS3 down in some way or show bitterness towards it.

Even the hype generated by hard hitters like MGS4, Final Fantasy and GT5 give the PS3 a great advantage. I'd say the 360's best chance of competing is with Halo Wars and unless we get Gears 2 the year's already lost.

Don't assume I'm uninformed, or "blurting out sh*te" as you put it, just because my comments don't favour your preferred console. I didn't say the 360 had no games for '08 but even the multi-platform titles(DMC4, GTAIV) are stronger than these:

Lost Odyssey
Alan Wake
Huxley
Left 4 Dead
Fable 2
Theseis
Infinite Undiscovery
Dead Island
Too Human

...and we'll get 100 more generic FPS' that'll still be better on PC.

I dont think it out does it by far. If you've already got a 360 you'll prefer the 360's lineup because of Gears of War and Halo wars, which are probs some of the reasons you bought one. But saying it far surpasses it is an exaggeration.

And im sure all the exclusives i put down are exclusives, albeit some are timed (unreal) but they havnt even started a 360 version so it will be ages away, if they do make a 360 version.

And can someone actually name some of the games i listed that aren't ps3 exclusive, it really doesnt help if you just say that none of them are exclusive.

well there the exclusives that interest me so im happy with the ps3.

plus ps3 already has games like uncharted, ratchet and clank and cod4, cod4 is on the 360 you say, and i say its also on the ps3, its still bloody brilliant on there. Wink

actually i think haze might be coming to another platform still. there latest recruitment ad in edge mag lists it as 'haze, which leads on the ps3 platform'

oh and i choose the sausage roll.
hardhat69 on 27 Jan '08

Even the hype generated by hard hitters like MGS4, Final Fantasy and GT5 give the PS3 a great advantage.

How does 'hype' relate to 'advantage'. You seem to think that it's impressive for Sony to continually hype games appearing on their console in order to raise expectations? Every time they do this, they fall flat on their ass and look even more desperate.

I'd say the 360's best chance of competing is with Halo Wars and unless we get Gears 2 the year's already lost.

That is laughable, it's a good job that's your opinion and not fact. M$/360 aren't trying to 'compete', nor do they need a chance to compete. In case you've been living on Mars, M$ have sold more consoles, have a much higher attach rate, have made a profit in the last 2 quarters meaning any losses are now being clawed back slowly....it's Sony are trying to play catch-up and are not doing very well.

Like I said, its a good job it's your opinion and means absolutely nothing or you'd get laughed off Planet Earth...and for your info I don't own a PS3 or 360 before you reply with some similar rant listing exclusives, RROD's and PR propaganda from a dev stable.

Worst bunch of retarded XBox 360 fanyboys...ever.

No,I have a PS3 thanks. Good try though, you sounded tough.
Deathcore on 27 Jan '08
Well i've been considering buying a PS3 in the very near future, but i have to say having read your "PS3 will own in 2008" article i filed to find a single reason in there that interests me.

If anything hearing PS3 owners go on about those "features" just puts me off getting a PS3. I think i'll wait til we see some good games first.
4321emanresu on 28 Jan '08
So 2008 is the year that the PS3 morphs into everything else other than a gaming machine. To be honest I've probably played less than 10 hours total on my PS3 compared to about 4 hours a day on my 360. I'm not bothered about the ps3 being able to launch foam rockets from it's usb ports to be honest.
bermudaviper on 28 Jan '08
lol, at the title, sounds more like an advermercial. Id expect such a title from a Playstation mag, but not an online multigaming mag, its just too funny

Got a PS3 and 360 myself.
Personally I don't understand why I keep hearing or reading that PS3 will own 2008. It's a joke. Last year was dismal for PS3 and yet I still bought one due to the price drop, future potential and the fact its a cheap Blu-Ray player.
However, 2008 will not be Sony's year. It will merely be the year that PS3 can be taken seriously as a rival for 360. The highlights for me will be MGS4, LBP and maybe Killzone 2 or Resistance if they have both made a step up as the originals were average.
Home will be a nice addition but im not really into these virtual chat rooms so I doubt I'd use it very often. Improved Blu-Ray support is good as it'll but the PS3 on par with standlone players.
Apart from that I can't see anything else I'd be interested in. There's GT5 and Tekken 6, but im not a car sim fan and Soul Calibur 4 will own Tekken 6. FF13 won't be released this year, nor will God of War 3 so im left questioning how Sony will own 2008?
Even the big multi-format games, DMC4 and GTA4 are better on 360. DMC4 on PS3 has slightly inferior textures, needs to install 5GB of data on the HDD which takes 25 mins and has longer load times. GTA4 I can't be too sure about but the fact Rockstar are using the 360 version for promotional purposes most likley means thats the slightly better version or at least the one they are most confident in.

Anyway, fanboyism aside, its going to be a good year for all console owners, even Wii.
vulcanraven01 on 28 Jan '08
CVG. What did you expect?

360 fanboys were drooling when they saw this.
"PS3 doesn't have ANY games", "I don't care about Blu Ray movies", "360 is SUCH a better system than ps3, just look at Halo3, Bioshock etc...".

I own a PS3, I am very happy with the games I have, and I am looking forward to MGS4 and GTAIV in particular.
I really enjoy all the ps3's features and find them all useful.
I COULD take an opportunity to go on about 360's HUGE failure rate, and the fact that Microsoft are one of the most reprehensible companies on earth, but I'm sure everyone already knows these things and has already made up their own minds on them.

The article was a bit pointless, but also harmless.
My main gripe is the fact that it gave 360 fanboys a forum for their innane ranting.
Honestly, who gives a f**k anymore?
tommycockles on 28 Jan '08
Agreed.
Deathcore on 28 Jan '08
All this fanboy nonesense means nothing to me. I own all 3 current gen consoles. I use the 360 the most. All of the features for the PS3 which are planned sound good, however a bigger focus on games is what's required. Home does sound interesting however.

Unfortunately the fact remains that games wise, since I finished Uncharted, I've not had a game in the PS3's drive. I have watched plenty of blu-ray's however, so I suppose Sony are happy anyway.
sobsom on 28 Jan '08
ZOMG!!! can you imagine the PS3's out there mrophing into Transformers?! i can imagine the thing mutating it can transform into a PS3 indoors, when outdoors it becomes a BBQ grill! u know, they can't reveal their identity, oh and UT3 is cool, on PC that is... its a shame, i liked the PS1, but PS2 and PS3 disappointed me for this reason, i HATE the way Sony advertises their stuff, after i saw an add for the PS2 the one with s**t loads of ppl climbing ontop of each other i never looked at a PS2 again. and now this has put me off completely on the PS3. try making games console next time sony even if it has gameplay>gfx. just need to make good games for it. Slightly agree with you although I wouldn't say "nothing will be better", more like nothing will be as fun!
I currently don't own a Wii and all these delays to Brawl are p**sing me off although if Wii drops in price then I'll find it hard to resist picking one up with this game. Cool
vulcanraven01 on 28 Jan '08
Ok we all know that 2008 is gonna be the biggest year for the PS3 but claiming that Sony is gonna dominate could be an over confident statement. You are assuming that there will not be any delays or bugs upon the release of these products.

The PS3 being an entertainment machine is not the problem but over hype is the reason why fans feel let down when Sony fail to live up to expectations. For all we know Home might not be as innovative as initially thought. Personalizing your own apartment, walking around trophy rooms and going to the cinema to watch trailers sounds great on paper but as any one thought that Home may be an advanced version of the sims? Consumers might get bored of it after a couple months and will look back and ponder if Home is as revolutionary as Kaz Hirai claimed it would be.

Time will tell but believe you me there will be a serious backlash if consumers suffer further delays or are given half baked products. And Bill Gates will be the one laughing.

I don't suppose it's too late to change the subject to snacks?
Runcieman tm on 28 Jan '08
It may 'own' 2008 but it will still be the worst video-GAME console.

shut up Wink

games are still coming and some here now

apart from heavenly sword and the average uncharted (if I don't mention that the fanboys will cry) there aren't any good EXCLUSIVES out. (note that virtua fighter 5 is coming to the 360)
as for the future, there are some promising games, but not many tbh. MGS4 and God of War III are the only things coming in the future that are tempting me to buy this over the 360.

PS3 has failed (epically) to reach the expectations of the average Sony fanboy, while the other two have done much more than live up to expectations. (I thought 360 was gonna be crap, but I guess not. Laughing )
joehyland on 28 Jan '08
^ Motorstorm and Ratchet are pretty good too.

I dont think ps3 will own this year, but i reckon it will catchup a shed load of ground on the 360 and the console war will probably be level by 2009. Its a great year for all the conoles: Halo wars, MGS4, Super smash brawl, GTA 4 etc etc
NG_21 on 28 Jan '08
Wow how you guys can say no games is incredible and laughable.

Here is the list of games I have read about that is coming out exclusivley on PS3 in 2008.

Wardevil (New IP)
Heavy Rain (New IP)
Infamous (New IP)
Eight Days (New IP)
White Knight Chronicles (New IP)
Gran Turismo Prologue
Gran Turismo 5
Socom: Confrontation
The Getaway
Yakuza 3
Forbidden Siren 3
Haze (Timed exclusive probably just for 200Cool
Resistance 2
Motorstorm 2
MLB the show 2008
NBA 2009
Killzone 2
Little Big Planet
Wipeout HD
Metal Gear Online
Metal gear solid 4
Tekken 6
Disgaea 3
Shin Megami Tensei.
And many more unannounced yet.

This will be followed into in 2009 with games like:

Final Fantasy 13
Final Fantasy 13 versus
Uncharted 2
2 projects from team ICO
God of War 3

Anyone who says that line up is s**t is pathetic.
Oh and its amazing how when Sony gets a good article from CVG once in a blue moon how they have suddenly sold out.

What some of you guys fail to realize is that 9.5 million PS3 owners bar a few want all those features that CVG just posted about or they would not have purchased a PS3.

Second thing for the morons posting about Sony not making games. Sony were the 3rd biggest developer in the world behind EA and almost on par but just behind Ubisoft in terms dev studios. That changed with Activision merging with Blizzard to 4th place. My point is Sony dont abandon their old consoles like the x-box was abandoned so they have to split their resources into developing for 3 consoles not just one. This is changing however as now Sony is mostly outsourcing PS2 and PSP game development to third parties like Ready at Dawn etc for their exclusives. So what do you guys think will happen when Sony puts 100% of its development resources into PS3? Well they are starting to now so wake up. For those of you saying but MS will release a new console in 2 years wake up MS has just only now started making a profit why on earth would they give that up in 2 years?

If second life is so popular why wont home be?

A GPS on you psp when your on holiday in a foreign city, why is this bad?

Watching sky sports soccer when you cant make it to the match cause your working overtime streamed via wifi to your psp at work, again why is this bad?

Having the best blu ray player on the market when clearly Blu Ray has won the war is bad why? Today it was announced woolworths is dropping hd dvd. Today at Eurogamer MS admited they are already in talks with the blu ray group. Again why is an upgradeable blu ray player bad?

Downloading movies off live is cool to keep for 24 hours from first viewing but not cool recording TV on PS3 why?

YES IT MUST BE CVG IS BIASED CAUSE THEY GOT PAID IT CANT POSSIBLY BE FOR HAVING COMMON SENSE!

Yeah... Shush now.

Back to the games... WipeOut would be quite good... And God of War... not really bothered about the other stuff myself though admittedly there are a few that I've never heard of. But the standard playstation guff such as GT, MGS, Tekken and the like... no thanks.

Maybe next year, eh?

ive got to say - that what youve posted there looks a p**s poor lineup imo.

Only god of war 3 interests me from that list....

thankgod for multiplatform games eh!

As for your last little shouty bit, CVG isnt supposed to be bias towards any platform, surley thats the whole point of a cross platform site? THAT my little freind is common sense.....
leeb1977 on 29 Jan '08
So nobody wants to spend the money on it as a games machine, so they're re-positioning it as a general digital server... Sorts proves the PS3 has bombed as a gaming machine - don't you think?

Most 360 owners are hypocrites. They slagged off the blu-ray player but I bet most of them wish they had one built into their machine. Sour grapes. If Microsoft adopted Blu-ray, which may yet happen, then fanboys are going to look even more stupid.

Oh, and is that a HOME copy that Microsoft are developing?

Oh, is that a HDMI input that Microsoft has included on latest machines?

etc, etc.

This gaming machine nonsense is getting old. There are some great games out for Ps3, the online is free and you can also watch some great blu-ray films. And any game fan is a film fan, right? So they go hand in hand.

360 fanboys are going to have to be a little more imaginative in their swipes at the ps3 because they sound like old women at the mo. Laughing
Mark240473 on 29 Jan '08
Whatever I post here will be interpreted wrong by fanboys so I won't bother. I'll just wait for 2008 to play out and hope that all 3 formats deliver me the quality that I demand.

Yes all the exclusives on PS3 fall on their bottoms. They are hyped up to the high heavens and
come crashing back to earth. Bollox. Lets compare some exclusive games for the 360s and
PS3s first year.
360 PS3
Kameo Folklore
Ninety Nine Nights Heavenly Sword
Perfect Dark Resistance FOM
Gears of War Uncharted Drakes Fortune
???? Ratcet & Clank ToD

To be honest thats all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure you can see where
I'm coming from. With the exception of Gears of War you can see that the line up of
first year exclusives on PS3 was much better than the 360. Ninety Nine Nights was
hyped up to be the 360's God of War and it was crap. Heavenly Sword was
disappointing but still a lot better than it.
Samildanach on 29 Jan '08
I was a willing guinea pig for the remote TV concept and got Sony's Location Free TV device, which allowed you to stream video to your PSP over the internet from any inputs into the box. Similar to a slingbox. I hooked up my Sky+ box to it. Results were very mixed. The upload speeds of most ADSL lines in the UK means the video upload struggles to hit 300KB/s. Connection was unstable and the responsiveness of the Sky+ remote tools poor. Hopefully Play TV will be a lot better.
gusswan on 31 Jan '08
for sure there's going to be a lot more for PlayStation in the future...
corlock on 31 Jan '08
Boooorrrrinnngggg....

Farsical system for games Evil or Very Mad . There's almost a case for trade descriptions. Sony have let it's gaming fans down big style. I've got it wrong twice, got an xbox instead of a ps2, and now I've got a ps3 instead of a 360. What a terrible judge of games consoles I am. Bring back the Amiga!
thebigfish08 on 1 Feb '08
Blu Ray & HD DVD meh!

DVD pwns them all and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, especially with the current and future upscaling DVD players for less than £40

By the time DVD sales start to plummet it will be due to download-able and streaming HD content
