Square Enix promises that "2008 will be the year" for new info (and maybe the release?) of the latest in its epic RPG series, Final Fantasy XIII, as it reveals plans to release a demo.
Not even a rough date was given for the demo, only that it main objective will be to give fans a hands-on with the new battle system.
The only hint of the full game's release was the quote: "I wonder when we'll be able to sleep...". Eh? We plan to have a kip tonight - is that when it's coming out?
Because we know you FF fans are keen on the smallest of details, here's a few more tid-bits plucked from the translations of the Japanese mags, courtesy of FF-XIII.net.
-Nomura: "2008 will be the year. There will be tons of news bits, info on characters and summons, and an unexpected connection between the keywords Cocoon and Farushi. - We're aiming for a demo to give players a hands on on the battle system. - FF13's theme: determination. - Farushi: Their existence surpasses humans. - Rushi: Those chosen by Farushi to carry out a mission. The pigtail girl is a Rushi. Farushi is not the Crystal. - Mr. 33cm is also a Rushi. - This time summons are in digital form. - A new monster that looks like a cross between a turtle and elephant. - The red thing on Carbuncle's head is a ruby. - Hint on release date: "I wonder when we'll be able to sleep..."
i was such a huge huge fan of ffVII that i only ever played VIII after that, i missed the rest on ps2. but am looking forward to ffXIII, ive grown up a lot since VII, time to get involeved in FF again, the gf wont see me for 6 months lol.
'I wonder when we'll be able to sleep'- Mabye it means they're not getting any sleep because of developing it? Then when they sleep it'll be ready? Haha doubt it
The battle system has to beat the c**k up that was Final Fantasy XII. The only Final Fantasy game that I could just never be bothered to finish. And this is coming from a lover of all RPGs. Bring on XIII, and lets hope it erases the horrible stain upon the Final Fantasy name.

Thank god theres someone with a bit of intelligence. Everyone was like "oh real time bla bla". IT WAS $*!T. NON RANDOM BATTLES WERE $*!T. If they havent realised this and are intent on forcing a new way to do final fantasy, well i'll have to find a new RPG series.
I for one hope this isn't anything like the mess that was FF12. As for a demo, not always the best thing to do for an RPG but im sure people will be creaming their pants over the prospect. As for relese date, my guess would be late 2008 at the earliest for Japan, Spring 2009 for the US and Summer 2009 for Europe.
this is the game i WILL buy a ps3 for. my release estimates (going on previous form) : end of '08 release for japan,july/august '09 for the states and december '09/early 2010 europe. i hope the us version is multi region,i'll be dead before square get around to the pal conversion.

The demo is more to show off the new battle system, so it better be bloody good! Weren't they trying to make the action flow like it did in the Advent Children movie? Probably just be something like queue up a few commands and watch the action on screen as a result, but whatever it is it should still play miles better than 12.
I my opinion, two things can make or break a good RPG. The battle system, and the story. The shortcomings of one can sometimes be forgiven if the other is good enough. I know I've played a few RPGs that had a terrible battle system, but I just had to know how the story finished. Also a poor story can be forgiven if the battle system is good enough. Screw up on both counts though and you're left with nothing but a piece of turd that no amount of item crafting or character customisation can cure. It'll be interesting to see how well the demo, when it is finally released, is taken. Bring on the full game though!!!!

All PS3 games as far as I know are region free so you shouldn't have a problem with that. I'll probably do the same thing myself because I just can't be bottomd to wait longer for the game to be translated into the rest of the European languages.

FFXIII uses the ATB battle system (FFVII,FFX-2) by all accounts.after the complete change of XII it'll be nice to get back to some true turn based goodness,no random battles though, please. i just hope there's a true overworld, airships that i can fly over said world in realtime and square to stop messing around with the summons (shiva possesses a motorbike!?). glad to hear uematsu's handling the score as well.
