Is Halo Wars going cross-platform?

PC version of the Halo RTS expected at GDC next month...
Halo Wars is rumoured to be Microsoft's next full-bloodied first-party game to support cross-platform play between PC and Xbox 360.

According to rumour circulating, a PC version of the RTS is going to be announced at next month's GDC in San Francisco.

To be honest, we wouldn't be at all surprised if Halo Wars was confirmed for PC at some point. Previous games in the Halo franchise have appeared on the platform, after all. Though this is a slightly different kettle of fish.

We reached for the Microsoft hotline... "We do not comment on rumour and speculation", the company's UK arm replied when we queried it on the report.

Cross-platform action between PC and Xbox 360 has hardly set the world on fire to date. Shadowrun failed to impress, and we've heard pretty much zero in terms of support from third-parties, although Sega RTS Universe at War does have the feature.

Halo Wars is in development at Ensemble Studios, which has worked on the Age of series of strategy games for PC. And it's looking ace.

I can only pray that this isn't true. The game was developed exclusively for 360. Porting it over to PC would result in a bogged down game by PC standards. If however they were also developing a seperate PC version, which is unlikely, 360 owners would get creamed by PC owners due to mouse and keyboard being better for traditional RTS games.

Cross platform?
Well I guess something has to.

wait for the army of ps3 fanboys coming in saying things like "I'm glad they're not doing it on the ps3, it looks s**t etc etc", when in actual fact they probably started to read the article thinking it was going 'multi' platform and they thought the ps3 was getting a halo game. Rolling Eyes

How can it not get released on PC? Rolling Eyes

That's what I thought although I don't own a PS3 Smile I hope this stays on 360 because it's going to be one of there killer games of 2008 (or a big hit at least) releasing big games on PC as well is just plain stupid!

theres no danger of it going to ps3 this one, ms wont let it happen, i own all 3 consoles and if a game is multi-platform anyway i always go for the 360 version of it cos the online is way better....

MS own the Halo IP so there's about as much chance of seeing a Mario game on 360 as a Halo one of PS3...
There is however nothing stopping Bungie making a new IP and releasing it multi-format.

Does anyone actually care if it does?
wudragon on 30 Jan '08
I think MS are s**tting themselves about Steam's growing dominance and are clutching at straws to try and keep this Games for Windows Live tosh alive.

I don't really care either. It's not in my top 5 games for 2008. RTS have never worked on any console format and as someone has already said it will be too straight forward to attract the hardcore PC gamers.

I would love to see a Oblivion type Halo game.

Im hoping its not Vista Only.

Many a game has claimed to be cross platform in the past but it seems to be dropped about a month before it's release. I expect this will hapen to this game as well.

Won't PC players have a rather large advantage due to mouse & keyboard?
SgtDan on 30 Jan '08
Yes PC players will have an advantage because they have a mouse. But don't you think that RTS' should be for the computer. With the Xbox 360, it's harder to move around the map with the joy stick. And they probably will change Halo Wars to work well with the computer.
