Nintendo files patent for crazy peripherals

An insight into where the company is going?
A document published by the European Patent Office has revealed a number of Nintendo's 'interesting' ideas for Wii peripherals, including a baseball bat, a skateboard and a teddy bear.

Take a look at the images of the patents for yourself.

Nintendo filed the patent way back in May of 2006, so we imagine most of the concepts have since been discarded.

However, as exemplified by Shigeru Miyamoto's 20-year obsession with bringing the Mii's to life, the company sometimes just won't let their idea's die.

Interestingly, hidden within the barmy pictures is a Wii Remote charger unit. Hopefully this won't be one thrown out with the rest.

Wii power glove FTW!!!

A BIKE??!? A FRIKKIN' BIKE?!?!?

Ye gads.... I thought the Guitar Hero guitar was an unwieldy peripheral (certainly when it comes to storage). Where the hell would I keep a bike??? Smile

The goggles one interests me though. It would be HUGE, but could be most intriguing. As long as it wasn't as debilitating as the Virtual Boy <vomits>.

Ninty need to start designing peripherals with the silicone glove in mind too. Am sick of having to 'peel' half of it back to put it in the docking station for starters....

Yeah the bikes going a bit far and wtf is the teddy bear all about?
spooney100 on 1 Feb '08
Don't know what's going on with the bike, skateboard and teddy bear Confused

That baseball bat could be used well in a game though. I imagine companies go through so many ideas and rough drawings before getting to the final product.

LOL a baseball bat. Your asking for trouble Razz

What is c&vg's obsession with a wiimote charger? get some ni-mh batteries and a charger for gods sake!

My thoughts exactly. It looks like it would be a bulky thing, too. Love to see Rockstar integrate that into Bully Smile

It's my obsession, actually. You know what's cool about the 360? If my controller dies, I can plug it in and not only continue playing, but charge it up at the same time.

The Wii remote, by contrast, just dies. Yes, I could buy more batteries and alternate them like some organised person, but I'm not. I'm lazy. And anything that uses batteries now just seems archaic.

They really seem to have completely lost the whole idea of a "Universal Remote", don't they?

There was me thinking all you needed was the Remote and a bit of imagination. Clearly you don't need imagination when you can just add on a load of cheap tat.

I don't need a gun to imagine that the Remote is a gun. I don't need a bat to imagine the Remote as a bat. And f*ck knows what the teddy is in aid of.
Dajmin on 1 Feb '08
incredible these patents. draw a picture, any picture and draw a wii remote next to it, a teddy bear for instance, then patent it. talk about stab in the dark. some poor guy at sony will invent a teddy bear add on for a me and my pony update and then get sued by nintendo. Laughing

Anyone notice that the gun was a NES zapper??!

It would appear Nintendo would like a slice of the usless plastic tat market.

I just replace my 360 controller batteries with some recharged ones and I am able to play without ruining the whole point of a wireless controller. I also have a hatred of rechargers as I have so many I have to label them as to which device they go with!

Ooh, ooh. I hope the goggles one is there with this (2:30 in) in mind.

Loved some of the others, though. Especially the teddy bear and rocking chair. We might be getting baby and old person simulators for those respective peripherals. The object is the same for each - don't s**t yourself!

All things counted for, the Wii Bike would make people shed more weight than balancing on a board would.. Laughing

I use this. Okay, it's not official, and you can't use the Wii Remote and charge at the same time; but until Nintendo release a better solution...

(No, I'm not getting paid to advertise Joytech Products Wink )

Touché Smile I don't mind being wired for a hour, but get your point about rechargers.
Chris_emf on 1 Feb '08
Talk about covering your bases. Whats next? A patent for the air surrounding a Wii remote?
boskersrevenge on 1 Feb '08
I see the rocking chair and bike as being possible add ons for wii fit, or maybe they were ideas they came up with before making the balance board.

Personally, the only one I'd buy would be that skateboard, purely because it seems like such an odd idea!

Holy s**t, that is amazing... God damn I hope Ninty see this and start working on it...

The plush toy seems like a good idea. Kids can talk to their teddy and their teddy talks back. All it needs is a microphone and a kid that's not got regional accents. Laughing
