Nintendo is blaming dust and tobacco on the disc read errors a number of Japanese gamers have occurred when trying to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
As we reported last week, the release of Nintendo's big title was tainted by reports that some purchasers encountered a message when run, which read, "Unable to read disc".
In reaction to the claims, Nintendo released a statement today addressing the problem. According to IGN, the statement cites 'dust and tobacco building up on Wii laser units' as the cause, and that Super Smash Bros. is the first Wii game that uses a dual layer DVD and consequently is the first title to be affected.
The problem can simply be fixed by cleaning the lens, which Nintendo has offered to do for all Japanese gamers that have encountered the problem. For those who chose to participate, they need only to send their Wii unit to a service centre in Kyoto and a week later their console will be returned, problem free.
It will be interesting to see whether Nintendo update the firmware too, which was the rumoured to be the cause of the original problem in the first place.
So thats what the funny smell is, I was thinking it was tabaco. does sound odd, and why should only dual layer DVD's be affected.
yeah do they have shoddy disc trays that let all the smoke and dust in? maybe they should do a recall and get this problem sorted cause surely other people are gonna be using dual layer dvd's and they'll all have the same problem WON'T THEY NINTENDO? Either that or somebody at nintendo's been smoking crack or something. has anyone else used this excuse yet?
I smoke but not inside so my Wii is ok as far as dodgy tobacco damage claims go. However many heated Gamecube sessions with the system upright have caused many a system topple (until I finally had the bright idea to just lay the thing down flat in the first place ).
This repeated falling over of the system has caused disc read errors... my DVD drive is now much more "clicky" than it should be, and sometimes I am required to remove and reinsert a game multiple times while giving the system a few smacks in order to have the disc load. It hasn't happened in a while, but I'm hoping I wont have problems with Smash Bros. since my DVD drive is clearly more sensitive than it should be. It'd be terrible if the only game I'm anticipating buying for my Wii won't actually work on it.
Ive had disc read errors since day one with my Wii. I almost always have to remove & re-insert the game before it loads properly since i got it out of the box & I dont smoke at all & keep it clean & dust free.
Its faulty and you should have taken it back to where you got it from for an exchange. Suppose theyre hard to get hold of though, so I understand.
I doubt this fault is because of 'dirt'. Surely the disk wouldn't read at all if it was, and the messsage wouldn't appear always at the same time.
I sense a blaggage in the force.
It could easily be dirt. unless the lens is covered in mud it should still read the disc but the read errors would go up considerably. Also the error could well be happening when it tries to read the second (more sensitive) layer and therfore could always occur at the same time. Nintendo should just release a lens cleaner disc as it is going to get dusty at some point. I have had to clean both my XBOX and PS2 drives over their lives.
Help me out someone!! In the US its politically incorrect to say fags on a forum. How is the fag part relevant? LOL, its what made me click the link to the article.
