Chatter of a 120GB PS3 rippled across the internet, with multiple sources claiming a 120GB console is imminent shortly. Sony won't confirm either way, but simply reminds us that if we really want a bigger hard drive we can upgrade it ourselves.
When asked about the rumours, SCE Australia boss Michael Ephraim admitted he wouldn't reveal such plans, even if he knew of any, before adding: "The hard drive issue, we've done it so you can upgrade the hard drive.
"It's non-proprietary, and you do have external hard drives," he says, before suggesting that retailers could themselves stock PS3s with pre-fitted larger hard drives.
"With PlayTV, yes you will need more storage," he goes on to admit, "and retailers will probably accommodate those needs for consumers.
"As we all know, the price of hard drive space is coming down. If we do it, fine, but if we don't do it, the consumer will still have choice," he told The Age.
You can get 500GB external hard drives for around £80 these days. Bargain.
this is great. are you taking heed mr gates. i sure as hell ain't paying Ł120 for your 120gb harddrive when i can pay less for one thats nearly 5 times the size
Convieniantly leaving out the fact that you need a specifically formatted external to work with your ps3, i found this out after id filled mine to the brim with videos
I think the 360's honeymoon period is over. Microsoft are going to need to start letting go of the reins or they'll face a consumer backlash in the light of all the FREEdoms the PS3 is presenting.

so i buy a 500 gig hard drive from maplin for Ł60 quid. i thought i could just plug it into a usb port. is this not the case? if not how do you format it so the ps3 recognises it?

You shouldnt need to format it. Iŕve got both an 120gb WD passport drive and a 500GB WD Book drive and they just plugged in and worked straight away. No probs and no fuss!
Already knew about this and its great Sony have allowed this for us honest gamers.
The only problem it presents is that your average joe isn't going to know about this method. What happens when he fills that 40GB up with all these game install's?
Also, I think it's pretty stupid of Sony to do this in a sense as it's obviously going to be perfect for when pirates crack the PS3 firmware. All you'll need to do is put those PS3 ISO's on your external HDD and off you go. No need to buy an expensive Blu-Ray burner or discs...
Using an external HDD via USB? Then the HDD nees to be in FAT32 not NFTPS. So long as its is already using FAT32 or you format it to use FAT32 then its fine.
Also the the max size internal HDD you can have is 250gig - HDD's over that size will not be reconised by the PS3. The HDD that you will need to buy to put inside the PS3 is a 2.5" SATA HDD - the kind they use in laptops.
When you do upgrade the internal HDD you can create a back-up of your current HDD on an extrenal drive. But it will not back up Dmeos or PS1 games. Only Video, Music and pictures - but you can just go to your downloaded list in the PSN and download all again. Last Thing, your PSN accounts are not saved on the HDD, they are saved elce-where on the PS3, so removing the HDD dosnt lose your accounts.

Did you get an internal / external drive?
Just look on YouTube for examples of how to replace your internal HDD.

I'm quite sure Sony have changed that and as long as the HD is a 2.5" SATA size doesn't matter. 2.5" HDs over 250Gig are still relatively expensive and I doubt you will ever need that amount of memory for the PS3
Be nice if you could do that for 360 to. A thought that didnt cross Microsoft perhaps?
That would be brilliant. I'm finding 20 gig woefully inadequate, but don't want to spend a s**t stack on a 120 gig one (which is both too expensive and bigger than I need). Either bring out a cheaper middle ground, or give us a firmware update that allows us to use external HDDs just like the PS3. Thanks.
this is amazing - i have a 500GB external HD for my PC so now i know that getting a 40GB PS3 wont be the end of the world. all we need now is backwards compatibility to be put back into the console.
