This isn't the first rumour we've heard about a possible Dead Rising sequel, but it's certainly one of the most plausible since it doesn't promise either a PS3 exclusive and/or a release date tomorrow.
According to the monthly rumour page of US mag EGM, Capcom's long-expected zombie sequel well... isn't going to be Capcom's long-expected zombie sequel.
The mag says Dead Rising 2 has been farmed out to an unnamed North American developer based in the Los Angeles area. The first game was handled by Capcom superstar Keiji Inafune at Capcom Japan.
The mag goes on to suggest that the second game will be released on "multiple consoles". That's PS3 and Xbox 360, then.
Capcom's UK outfit doesn't seem to be around to comment today, but if the news turns out to be true we don't see it necessarily as a bad thing. Dead Rising is a game with a very Western-style of gameplay (open-ended, free-roaming) and Capcom obviously isn't keen to spread itself too thin - and neither are we.
Let Japan work away on Resi 4 and Street Fighter while the West pumps out a second Dead Rising - just get rid of that good-awful save system from the first one, please.
New dev team doesn't necessarily mean inferior product - though it doesn't bode well I must confess.
Would we rather wait 5 years and see Capcom do it, or would we rather they have a 3rd party do it and get it next year? I guess that's the real question...
I was just thinking today there hadnt been any news on DR2 for ages. It was the first game I played and first I completed on 360. I love the game and the save systems fine. I still replay it now and again.
I'm disappointed that capcom aren't doing it but that doesn't mean it will end up rubbish, I just hope its just as fun but with a decent save system this time round. It'll be good to see what they do with it anyway!
It's disappointing news really however you look at it. A different developer means they'll either use the existing engine and copy the formula which may come off as second-rate or they may attempt to do something more with it and risk losing the first game's feel, quirky humour and atmosphere in the process. Either you end up with a game that's not a true sequel as it isn't made by the original developers. Imagine if someone else other than Bungie and Epic made Halo 4 and Gears of War 2 respectively, it just wouldn't be the same as it's someone else's vision.
Seems strange that Capcom themselves aren't doing it though...

Please dont mess this up!
it was a fantastic game and there was nothing wrong with the save system. if you made a mistake you couldn't cheat by going back to a previous save point. all you had to do was make sure you saved it at every bathroom. if you killed a survivor or missed a scoop you just had to jog on and try and get it next time through.
To be honest it sounds like a realistic idea. You can't really do much with a Dead Rising sequel in terms of gameplay. All you can really do is add more stuff. Some imporvements could be the save system being modernized and the inclusion of some sort of multi-player or co-op.

Nah - take it out of the mall and move it into a nearby town ala Resi 2 is a great start. As is multiplayer.
Also, add the mini game of 'Kill Otis over and over again in more and more painful ways each time for calling you ALL THE DAMN TIME in the first game' would be another great addition...
To whoever ends up developing this game : Please keep the feel of the original, it is one of my absolute favourite games on the 360 and i don't want to see change just for change's sake. You can fiddle with the save system and make improvements there. In all other cases more of the same will be more than good enough thankyou.
Just because they farm it out to a different developer means very little. I'm sure Capcom will be all over it - this US team will just be banging out the 1s and 0s; the design, gameplay mechanics and final code will all have to be okayed by Capcom Japan.
I can use a paint brush but that doesn't stop me hiring a bloke to paint my house if I'm busy.
It's by turns funny and then downright scary to see just how closely the gaming industry is following in the footsteps of the movie industry now that it really is a mass market.
A great director/project leader produces a popular film/game that generates a healthy profit to cost ratio and a franchise sprouts up, usually with little or nothing in common with the original other than theme and title. Think Saw, Blair Witch etc. etc.
I'll be interested to see how this sequel turns out, and just how much input Capcom Japan have along the way.
This is not unheard of for Japanese companies. Lots of their games have so called "secret developers". Most recent example I can think of is Super Smash Bros. Brawl
I would rather Capcom were doing this but we can't really judge till we get some sort of idea of what its gonnae be like. be interesting to see what the location is this time round, the save system was fine, I really think they should add a multiplayer option, co-op would be good and the onky way I think the original could've been improved is by making the text bigger!
