Army of Two assistant producer, Matt Turner has told CVG that he fully supports PSN, but admitted experiencing "growing pains" with the relatively young system.
With its friends list access, universal game invites system and general intuitiveness, Xbox Live is rightly regarded as the superior service. Turner says, however, that PSN "has all the capabilities".
"There are extra challenges [with PSN] just because the PS3 is newer to our team so we've had to work through some growing pains, getting used to a whole new system of development," Turner told us.
"But it has all of the capabilities, it's just that at the moment we have more experience on the Xbox."
He goes on to say that the upcoming Army of Two will get over the shortfalls of the PS3 firmware's online menus in similar ways to Burnout Paradise.
"We have friends lists accessible during the game, you can send invites and your friends can join you - it's as easy as doing it on Xbox Live," he promises.
PSN is expected to catch up to (or even better, dare we speculate) Xbox Live when both a much-talked-about in-game XMB is introduced in a firmware update and PlayStation Home is released later this year.
Look out for Turner's full interview, his hopes for PS3 success in 2008 and how his game measures up to Gears of War, later today.
Anyone who doubted the capabilities is quite frankly an idiot.
All Xbox Live is, is software. The friends list, the invite system, the matchmaking, it's all software. The only difference is Microsoft note the importance of this and give the developers the majority of the code to work with. That's why Xbox Live is so easily integrated - the development kit comes with all of the required libraries to do such features, and any improvements are shared (at least internally).
EA dev: PSN has "all the capabilities".....of!, an Access spreadsheet!..... come on, it is poor.
I own both a 360 and a PS3 and I dont think that PSN is bad at all, in fact I think its quite good. Because the PSN is almost the same as Live Market place,
-Both have demos of retail games, both have new download only games. -Market Place has SD/720p Movies - But PSN has PS1 games (which I perfer over the movie content) -Market Place charges for things like gamer pictures which is so wrong, but the PSN gives whole themes away for free.
There is quite a lot more on market place but its been out since Nov 2005 so of course it will! And things like live messages in games and unirversal game invites are things that WILL be sorted, and once they are can Microsoft really justiy 40 quid a year next to the PSN being free?
I like my 360 and I like XBLive but I feel that 360 owners bash the PSN without really thinking what it offers, and just assume that because the PSN is free its shat.
-Also on a side note. Havent EA been nice to the PS3 this week! First they say that PS3 sale will beat 360 sales this year and now this! Maybe thats why Burnout Paradise sold MORE on the PS3 than the 360 version. Check VG charts if you like!

I totally agree. Xboxlive has more content but as only_777 says it's been about longer.

Well as a casual online gamer (very casual on the consoles as in I don't play them online much) the free PSN service obviously suits me far more than Xbox LIVE so I've cancelled my Gold subscription after five years. All the shortcomings of PSN are more tolerable when you consider it doesn't cost Ł40 per annum to play games online. The big problem with PSN as I see it is that it isn't standardised like Xbox LIVE so every PS3 game seems to have slightly different implementation for its online multiplayer.
That said, the PS3 online experience for me is akin to that of my PC which I've been playing online on for years. Xbox LIVE from my limited experience does tend to suffer more from crippling lag in the more popular titles (anyone remember how awful Call of Duty 2 or Saints Row were online?), perhaps because it has far more subscribers than PSN. In general my time with online games on the PS3 has been pleasant and surprisingly lag-free, even Unreal Tournament III against Americans-only has been without any issues. With that in mind, I can't really complain about PSN at all... as I said earlier, it is *free*.
I don't see why it can't be equally as good as Xbox live. And it almost is, or it will be nearly as good after the firmware update with in game XMB
ive got both consoles (so this is no fanboy here) and although i have fun on UT3 online on the ps3 i will be honest and say on the whole xbox live p**ses on psn, psn has a lot of catching up to do, it may well be good one day but theyre always going to be playing catch up to xbox live, hell, its not even as good as xbox live was on the old xbox yet is it in many aspects....
