Don Mattrick may have let slip something that he shouldn't have: that the online multiplayer portion of Grand Theft Auto IV will only be available on 360.
UPDATE: Rockstar has confirmed to CVG that "both versions of Grand Theft Auto IV will have an online multiplayer component", so it looks like Mattrick did get his words mixed up.

Speaking on a Major Nelson podcast the two Microsoft execs spend most of the time saying the word 'Microsoft' (count 'em) and patting each other on the back about how great 360 is doing. And why wouldn't they?
But then the conversation moves to great games and, quite rightly, GTA IV springs up.
Mattrick says that it's "an amazing piece of software and I'm really excited with its downloadable content and online multiplayer support. Again, that's something that's unique to 360." He added, "We think consumers are going to love that and it's going to create, what I would describe again as the premium experience on our platform."

How bizarre. I'm not particularly a fan of online multiplayer - for me it seems like a means of connecting me with the kind people I hate.
I do, however, realise the importance of multiplayer, and the significance of this.
I can't think of a game that has been so stunted on one console and for a reason that is nothing to do with technical limitations. Sony must be slightly peeved.

Maybe this "uniqueness" that Microsoft are referring to in GTA IV's online multiplayer mode is excessive lag? I mean has anyone ever played Saints Row online?
This... this really is quite huge to be honest. Of course it depends on what form the multiplayer takes. The multiplayer component of GTA 3 could have been better - you could only do certain mission multiplayer. If it takes the form of an open world with multiple players, then I'm afraid we're all stuffed.

What p**ses me off is that this is purely down to Microsoft bribing the GTA publishers to make the content exclusive to their platform. the stampede of 360 fanboys here is hilarious. the addition of a few extra comma's into a sentance and it takes a whole new meaning. 360 may well get an online experience, doesnt mean the ps3 wont. remember, while 360 has a whole 25gb to play with on a disk, the ps3 has 50gb. so which version, if any, is going to have things left out. it really doesnt matter, be happy with what you've got, you only need to worry about which console has what on it if you have both, then the addition of content on one console over another does matter.

Yes i own a 360 & yes i think its an awesome games console. Yes i own a PS3 &...... its yet to prove its worth. If im honest, i bought it for a cheap Blu-ray player & if i didn't have the 360 i'd probably just get on with it, but what can i say, i've been spoiled by the 360's games line up, online & general LIVE functions. My fear is my PS3 will end up just like me PSP, a great piece of hardware that can do a number of things from surf the net to opening a can of f**king beans, but isn't great in the area i bought it for.....playing games.

Haven't Rockstar said they could not put La Noire on 360? It was on a rumour site so granted, it is not reliable, but i'll raise the point anyway.

yeah mine would be gathering dust too (it really is i must give it a clean) if i didn't have pro evo on it. any game thats released on both consoles i've been opting for the 360 one like DMC4. and vercetti must still be hammered from last nights bottle of buckfast. or as its more commonly known a bottle of who the f**k u lookin at.

I can't believe some people are still bashing the PSP for having no good games... It's got s**tloads of the things. Remember that the exclusivity deal is only for a limited amount of time - it's not forever. After that I bet the same stuff'll appear on PS3. And of course by that time it'll have been bug tested by the 360 owners and might actually work

Thats the point Marty, for sure the Exclusive is more a time period thing, both for DLC and LA Noire.

Vice City was an Exclusive on PS2, but later came out on Xbox and a graphically better version too.
There are not enough units currently of Xbox 360 or PS3 to keep exclusives for the machines and to recoup the money invested, you will probably see ports of both in the future.
It seems I've joined the party late, but skimming through the posts, wow, some PS3 fanboys were having kittens for a while there! I'm pretty sure both versions will have the same online mode's, just that the 360 version will be better due to taking advantage of LIVE. Anyway, roll on April!

I wonder if they would do a drop-in drop-out type system, like they did with Burnout Paradise. Where ever you are in the world, just a quick right on the d-pad (could be a different combination of buttons), and select your options from there. Then just drop-in to a hosts game while staying where you are in the game world. You get challenges to do, etc. Could be a hellavalot more fun than the yawn-fest that was 'Freeburning' on Burnout Paradise
But anyway, good news all round for both consoles.
I can't believe the amount of attention this story has gotten. People actually believed Rockstar would have multiplayer exclusively in the 360 version? That's lunacy. The very idea of it is just absurd. I took a glance at the headline this morning and immediately called bulls**t on it, which is why this is my first post here. Something like that would simply never happen. It was an obvious misunderstanding of the fact that the Microsoft dude was referring to DLC.
Honestly I don't care anyway. There will not be co-op, and competitive multiplayer in sandbox games just doesn't work... Though Saints Row is my best indication of that fact so far and it's not exactly a top-class game.
I was a bit surprised CVG ran with this story, but looking at the traffic to the comments thread and the fact that a few other well-known gaming sites (N4G for one) are linking back to CVG, I suppose they've done a bloody good days work. Nice one chaps.

Hollywood! Don't you feel a bit silly now? Everybody with common sense knew this already.
I had no doubt that there would be online play on the PS3 if it was on the 360, its just your attitude, just because it was on the 360, your instantly not interested, its a waste of time.... your just soooo protective of a console?...
I suppose the big suspicion here is that "This is a multi-format experience - is everyone being treated equally"? If the muliplayer was 360 only then at least PS3 owners wouldn't have to endure online abuse like you get with Live, and you've also got the beauty of a reliable console to play it on. No amount of exclusivity can buy reliable hardware.
Sorry MS, I pay good money for my consoles, I expect them to work. Maybe one of the exclusive episodes is titled "Three Red Rings"

The reliability issue is another thing though. I'm on my third 360. Go on laugh....

Not yet... It won't be long before they introduce an MMO like subscription to certain games (i.e. AAA ones)... I can see it happening.

Its probably in EA's plans as they are more interested in taking your money than the enjoyment you recieve, cant see how else they will do $6Bn in revenue otherwise !!

I think that once you start spending a few quid here and there a month on this Micro transaction business as they like to call it, it can soon add up. I dont want to pay €70 for a game and then €4-€10 a month to play a game online.
I think some will pay it, but others will just say no. I think it will depend on how much you play. I play CoD 4 once or twice a week online, and if they charged to do it, I wouldnt bother.
featuring an online to a game isn't necessarily mean that its cool, enabling a game to be online is not always nice. I do think that GTA IV is great even without an online feature...
Seriously PS3 people, if PS3 had some awesome games 360 didn't, I would be the 1st to buy one, I ain't a fanboy of one system, I just love gerat games, and at the minute, 360's catalogue of games and online experience really is a lot better.

What he said was half right, the xbox 360 will have exclusivity with 2 episodic content downloads. He was however wrong with the statement that the ps3 wont have online multiplayer... don't worry... i'm not?
