Supposed first screenshots of EA's highly anticipated Command & Conquer sequel Red Alert 3 have appeared on the internet... and they're looking slightly unimpressive to say the least.
The screens, which appeared on this shady looking website, suggest that the third soviet RTS is running on a modified General engine, which equals visuals that aren't exactly on par with modern day strategy games like World in Conflict.
But of course we could give a monkeys as long as C&C's excellent gameplay is intact in the sequel, and some of the crazy units we've already glimpsed have us hopeful. Let's hope C&C3's FMV revival continues in the Red Alert universe as well.
EA's not in the office yet to let us know if these are legit or not, but we'll let you know. Look for the massive first look at the RTS in the next issue of PC ZONE, out soon...
I'm not clicking on any shady links while I'm at work, but surely if they look dated it could just have been a really early build? I would have thought they would have used a version of the C&C3 engine rather than an older one.
It will be a mediocre RTS that tries to appeal to "hardcore" C&C fans by being fast paced and maybe bringing Tanya back. The graphics, if we're lucky, will be a shade better than C&C3 and the audio will be the same kind of boring, watery techno and dull sound effects.

Blinded by nostalgia, this game would get 8/10
I called it.
Yup, pretty much sums it up what i was thinking.
Yeah same as. Oh and it no way looks as good as Starcraft 2!

Did you play C&C3? If you think that was a mediocre RTS, then I can dismiss your comments right now.
Any C&C game has the right to be more traditional and not so progressive BECAUSE THE SERIES HELPED TO WRITE THE BOOK ON WHAT RTS IS!
Think CVG are looking at different screenshots, look fine to me. Sticks to the same cartoony look Red Alert has always had and the conversion to 3D doesn't seem to have detracted from this.
But I have to agree with the general consensus on here, C&C has always been strategy light. It is the Serious Sam of the RTS world and I can't imagine this being any different. That doesn't mean they aren't fun, but they certainly aren't the best strategy games around.
As a long-term C&C fan, I was massively underwhelmed by C&C3.
The series peaked with RA2:YR, and has been going downhill ever since. EA are milking it like every other franchise, as was apparent the moment Generals got announced!
Tiberian Sun and RA2 had more overview in their lowest resolutions than everything the Sage-engine has ever produced so it's a real shame to see that EA still follows the easy "just make everything shine"-way with RA3. I am not asking for a SupCom kind of zoom of expanded mini-map or anything like that but this is getting ridiculous.
How many times can a dev use the same engine for different RTS's? EALA is really aiming for a Guiness world record here.
I really expected a new engine.. Are you sure those screens aren't from a some Generals RA mod or similar? Fast googling showed at least two results, but the tesla coils differ from those screens in both versions. Rewrite the engine already and give us a better view of the battlefield, damn it.
