Wii sales surpass GameCube's lifetime sales?

Maths hats on for some strong stat action
It's official. Well, almost. The Wii has overtaken the worldwide lifetime sales of the GameCube in the thirteen months since its release.

Now for our legendary E in A Level mathematics to finally prove its worth. On February 9, the Wii had sold 21.490 million consoles, while its predecessor had sold a mere 21.515 million units.

Based on the amount of Wii's sold last week, the console is currently selling 64,000 units per day.

Pop all that information in a mathematics machine and you get a figure of 21.554 million Wii's sold by the closing of business on February 10. Wowsers.

To put this in perspective, 61 million NES units, 49 million SNES units and 33 million N64 units are currently floating around the world in various states of despair.

Nintendo shouldn't be breaking out the champagne yet, though. The next milestone for them makes the GameCube lifetime sales look like loose change by comparison.

Last October, Sony reported that the PS2 lifetime worldwide sales had surpassed 120 million. There's a long way to go, yet.

Well done Wii.

I am sure that there will be some execs licking their wounds at MS and Sony's headquarters.

As I said, well done Nintendo.

1 question though? How the hell DID they do it though?

anyone who owns or has played the better games on wii wouldn't be surprised by the news. ;o

Gotta beat the N64 first.

21 Billion is some going!

One would assume the comma should have been a dot. Typos, eh?

Congrats to Ninty on doing better than last generation. Here I was thinking the PS3 would have been miles ahead in the lead, 360 a strong second and the Wii trailing behind. How wrong I was. This is truly a 3 horse race this generation.

I don't own a Wii but I must admit the Wii has been a real shock for me this gen.
The only niggle is that I doubt MS or Sony see Wii as a competitor and most gamers see it that way as well.
The majority of people I know own a Wii as a companion console to go alongside their 360. Not that their anything wrong with taht of course but it's a farcry of the Nintendo of the past that looked to please their hardcore fans rather than look to rake in the cash.

The PS2, a machine rammed with loads of garbage has sold 120mil. So when people say its silly the Wii has sold much (not you guys above mind, I mean in general), they seem to forget its doing the same as the PS2 did.

Good on them. I'm having much fun with mine. Just need third parties to up their game a bit instead of crying about it

i bet you that's 61 million still working NES consoles, 49 million working SNES systems and 33 million working N64's lying about in cold storage, just waiting for a nuclear war, so they can retake over the earth like the c**kroach.

You've gotta feel sorry for the old 'Cube and i wasn't even into it that much. It has some decent games, deserving to sell out the Xbox at least Wink *runs*

For me, the Wii doesn't deserve what it has done, it's like a Furby but less fluffy.

The PSP may have had a lot of garbage, but it has a lot of good games. The Wii doesn't. Garbage comes with success really.
almanac2015 on 14 Feb '08
well the mass market of casual gamers is what nintendo have tapped into with the wii. i doubt if it would of done so well without going down the 3-70 year old/male-female, family console for all road!

Like the Dreamcast, the Gamecube is/was an underrated machine.

I wholeheartedly agree. Both the Dreamcast and the Gamecube were WOEFULLY underappreciated.

Nintendo didn't do themselves any favours with the 'Cube though - a s**t name (something they have a fondness for it seems) and chunky plastic controller and aesthetics when the other two were going for sleek designs that don't look out of place under your tv. Ok, the original Xbox missed this by a country mile, but whatever (seriously, what the hell is in that giant box? It's crazy).

I mourn the Dreamcast more than most consoles though. It's death meant the likelihood of seeing Shenmue 3 was pretty damn unlikely. *sob* And I utterly loved the first two....

I echo this sentiment (although I haven't played Mario Galaxy yet)

So the PSP has good games...err, would you care to name them, cause I can only think of a very small handful that are worthy of purchase and one of those hasn't even got a UK release date yet!

The Wii is a stonking console and deserves to do well. Nintendo have got it spot on this time round - it's nice to see someone else besides Sony hoging the limelight!!!!

You mean there is actually a game worth playing on my Wii!? Surprised

Who could have thought that repackaging a gamecube with a gimmicky controller would have worked so well!?
Robzy on 15 Feb '08
They're already a step up from last gen. Let's hope they can keep the momentum going and can get some superb 3rd party support going as well.

Odd how no-one has ranted about the pointlessness of sales figures, something that was a prevalent theme amongst the responses to the recent PS3 sales figures article Smile.

I kind of agree with this.

I own all three. I see the 360 & PS3(in time) being my primary consoles & the Wii is like a supplementary one. I buy the odd classic on it & great multiplayers (seeing as though most PS3 & 360 games are online only multiplayer Evil or Very Mad )but otherwise its left well alone.

Yes that is odd *ponders* Confused

Sales figures are being thrown around though. Don't really care about sales numbers. Why because possibly thousands of the things end up back on the market anyway from disappointed owners or owners buying a 2nd or 3rd machine to replace the lemon they ended up with (myself included).

I think its because in the PS3 ones people start saying "this proves its the best console" & "2008 will be the year of the PS3. This proves it"
Whereas with Nintendo ones you normaly just get people saying its 'undeserved' or 'well done'. Nobody claims the sales make it a better console.

Idea CVG, let's do an article that has sales figures from the 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS, PSP, PC and MAC. Very Happy

We'll lure all the fanboys of every format into one room and watch the mayhem unfold Twisted Evil

What a thought Shocked
