Red Faction 3 "redefines destruction"

Details on the third game in the series emerge
Anyone familiar with the Red Faction series will know it as a first-person shooter. But for the new game, Red Faction: Guerrilla, it's gone third-person.

Official details on the third game in the series have now emerged, and THQ is boldly promising the game will redefine destruction and open-world gameplay.

It's set 50 years on from the first Red Faction game, and returns us to Mars where we're playing an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement and battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force.

Elaborating on the open-world aspect, THQ says we'll be carving our own path, "wreaking havoc across the vast, open-world environment of Mars, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos" during the fight.

It adds that environments will be fully destructible.

"Red Faction: Guerrilla expands the signature destruction elements of the series and pushes the boundaries of next-gen gaming on a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF presence brick by brick," Mike Kulas, president of Volition - the game's developer - says.

"With a new third- person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we're excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms."

A number of multiplayer modes are based around destruction gameplay, which we assume means blowing up the opposition's HQ and the like.

Red Faction: Guerrilla's in development for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, and is due out in THQ's fiscal 2009 - April '08 to March '09.

Does 'Completely Destructable' mean I can blow a whole in a wall to get past people without killing them, or have parts of it fall on them?
I won't play it unless I can do that.

Didn't they make the same claims about the original Red Faction? Meh.
csdaveuk on 20 Feb '08
uhh... yeah. Whatever. They said 'fully desctructable' about RF 1 and 2, and it was far from it.

How about they stop overhyping their game and realise that there will never be a 'fully desctructable' feature in ANY game EVER? It's literally impossible unless you want players to be able to dig all the way out of the map into the void or simply go right to the end of the game in 2 minutes.

By all means, say you can destroy the environment 'to a degree' and use it to your advantage - but NEVER say 'fully desctructable' because you just look stupid.

Gears of Mars then.

I had a demo of the original Red Faction engine at ECTS some years ago and you could drill your way out of a level quite easily with a big drill vehicle thingy. This sort of freedom made the game as it obviously created headaches for the gameplay.

Still, if Crysis and Battlefield: Bad Company can do it...

Why does everyone relate 3rd person cover systems to gear of war. It was not the first game to do it and it wasn't even the first game to do it good, Killswitch anyone.

But yea on topic i used to love the first Red Faction in mulitplayer blowing holes in the wall. Was great fun seeing how far you could tunnel into the side of the wall could get pretty far sometimes. Very Happy

I used to really enjoy the Red Faction games, so my hopes are high. Not so sure about the switch to 3rd person though.

agreed,rf2 was good,3rd person,not so good.
nagashino on 20 Feb '08
more likely than not the 3rd person approach is to accomodate for the 360 et al

I played RF2 for hours and hours on 2 player with my bro. It was great as it only cost us £4 off amazon also the way you could design bots was awesome. We called the zombie Stuve and it alctually runs around shouting Stuve. Anyway I will probably buy this all the destruction was rubbish in RF2 but didn't make it a crap game. Third person is bold but could result in an even better game or they could still leave the option to switch between 1st and 3rd. If everything is destructable that will be awesome tearing buildings apart would be legendary but I fail to see how you could dig.
