In its GDC keynote extravaganza, Microsoft confirmed that the first downloadable "episode" for GTA IV will be coming this August, exclusively to Xbox 360.
Grand Theft Auto IV: Episode One, as it's being called, is presumably the first in the previously announced two downloadable episodes for Rockstar's sequel. They've been rumoured to have cost Microsoft a fair few pennies too.
Microsoft VP John Schappert also confirmed that more than a thousand new games will be released on the Xbox 360 in 2008 and that Grand Theft Auto IV will be one of the biggest. Thanks, but we already knew that.
GTA IV is out on April 29. We'll have hands-on impressions from a recent Rockstar event soon.
Does anyone one now much will each episode take up on your hard drive? The 20GB hard drive is far too small to keep all this downloadable content on. It also sounds like this is just going to be a few bolt on missions. If the game is as well planned and thought out as R* are claiming extra content wont add too much. I think Microsoft just paid 50 million dollars for some bragging rights and not much actual content.
1000 games x 1000 achievements points = 1,000,000 more points for your gamerscore this year.
Microsoft should pray that these extra episodes are worth a look if they're shelling out 50 mil. Just think of all those games they could have enriched with that cash. But then again, GTA4 looks set to be THE must-buy game of the year - nay, the decade - so MS are obviously betting a lot on that prediction to do anything they can to get people to buy the 360 version.
Are you sure MS said they will be releasing 1000 games this year? It seems more likely that they meant 1000 games will have been released on the system by the end of the year, including existing ones. 1000 in one year seems a bit OTT.

If true then publishers are in for a pretty rough ride because there's no way more than 10% of those will have healthy sales.
Call me synical, but is this Exclusive definate, or exclusive like the multiplayer exclusive last week?
As I can imagine that its exclusive for maybe till after Christmas or something.
Vice city was Exclusive on the PS2 and then came out 6 months later on the Xbox.
Its not a fanboy rant, but a serious question and I would appreciate a serious answer, if anyone actually knows.
It is well known that Microsoft has payed Rockstar for the episodic content to be exclusive so id Rockstar released this content to the PS3 version might be a breach of contract which will most likely lead to all kinds of legal mumbo jumbo.
It is rumoured that the figure was 50 million ($) which equates to (If Rockstar kept 100% of every sale) roughly a million copies of the game sold and they have that already without even one copy of the game being sold. However there will be the costs of production of this content, the extra hours of work the staff are required to do for content production etc. which is to be payed by that 50 million.
Like most here, I really can't wait for GTA4 and I'm hoping that this exclusive content contains more than just a few additional missions and vehicles - it'd be great if it adds some more locations, or extends the map a little (maybe an island??)
Either way, I'm getting this on release and I truly anticipate that this will be the best GTA yet and, most likely, Game of the Year - be it on PS3 or 360...this is one we'll all enjoy!
I've never really got into GTA games much even though i've bought them all, but this one could be the definative title for GTA, I like the realisim aspect being put into it more this time, hopefully the new content will add something to the game but I doubt it would, plus the price of said content will likley be hefty so MS can recover the costs for getting the content!
I don't really care for additional content. I have both consoles so I have the choice, but I'm still going with the PS3 version. I prefer that machine overall, and not fussed about paying extra to add a bit of content to what is (judging by previous entries) an already massive game. I think I skipped most of the side missions in previous GTAs as it is, so I'm not sure paying extra for some more would be the best move for me anyway.
Thats if you don't get three red rings before you reach the exclusive content! (sorry, couldn't resist)
Yeah, I'm still going with PS3 too, was never interested in even the PS2 extras so the basic game will do me fine, I only like GTA for the messing around anyway, only the series most ardent supporters are going to be interested the extra content.. and its online only.

Considering MS paid $50 million for this exclusive content, I'd safe it's pretty safe to assume it will remain exclusive. That is after all a HUGE amount of money to pay just for content. As for the Vice City on Xbox 1 affair, Sony had an exclusivity deal on all GTA games until a certain date, which happened to be 6 of so months after Vice City was released which is why Xbox 1 got the GTA 3/Vice City bundle. As for the nature of this content, I'd assume it's more plot which includes missions and possibily new vehicles/weapons. Anyway, it's a smart move by MS, they couldn't get the game exclusive so the next best they could do was to ensure 360 is the only place to get the complete GTA 4 experience.
Still no idea how large the content is going to be, how it's work or how much it'll cost. I'll judge the differences when I know that. For now though I am just hoping that the standard game is great.
wish c**ts would stop calling the 360 version (+ paid for DLC!) the "complete" experience.
do u think rockstar are gonna leave the games ending open or something?! the DLC is going to be tacked on, it will probably be a retrospective mission or something. should be cool, if youve completed the game fully, but if it was anything major the ps3 would get it eventually.
they paid 50m because GTA can command that type of cash. its not worth it in terms of content, but its the bragging rights/exclusive "selling point" MS paid for. rockstar probably didnt ask for that much, MS probably put that figure out there to ensure the content and shut out the ps3 in a desperate attempt. quite low down.

PS3 owner by any chance?
What gave it away? So much anger....
Naaaa...it was the photograph of him humping a PS3 as his Avatar that gave it away.

It's not 'low down', it's business......it's no more unscrupulous as any other exclusive title. To be fair, I don't think it matters an awful lot - there will be some swayed to pick up the 360 version over the PS3 (those that own both consoles), but I doubt that'll be any substantial amount....thing is, as GTA has always been linked with the Playstation as an 'exclusive'(albeit a timed exclusive), I suspect there'll be plenty that will go with the PS3 version purely because of the control-pad/method - I always played them on PC, but I'll be picking up the 360 version
f**king tossers, whats to be angry about? i said it would be cool. but MS are clearly just doing this out of desperation. the PS, despite whatever start it gets off to, always goes on to trounce the opposition. MS know this, and they know ps3 has now started outselling their little breakdown-box.
it will be fun to see the spike in RROD when this comes out, i hope MS gets the press they deserve over it. they are basically flogging faulty goods, and they know it.
honestly i think the ps3's reliability is as much of a swaying point for this game as the 360's DLC is.
Possibly for some - but, it seems to be the PS3 owners that obsess over this more than 360 owners. My 360 has never caused me any problems whatsoever and only provided hours and hours of enjoyment.
I really don't see why you think that MS are doing this out of desperation - do you think that they're all fighting for their lives trying to secure downloadable content for GTA4??....nonsense, we've just had a whole slew of new games announced for this year - some great titles coming up that will keep MS, and their customers, more than occupied.
Seriously, just get it on the PS3 and stop bitching about a console that you obviously don't like and don't own....

it is desperation. they cant even outsell a much pricier console anymore. their honeymoon period is over. they are having to "replace" millions of 360's, and as time goes on the wear and tear will only get worse. people are realising it for what it is - a s**t console with good games. ps3 is a good console, now with strong incoming ps3 titles like MGS. they are just trying to steal some thunder.
the 360 superior game catalogue arguement is fast going out the window this year. so now its down to: what would u rather buy. a good or a bad console?
I've never read som much bullsh*t,
stop pinning everything on MGS4, it'll be a great game but where are all the others you talk about ???
Tell you sony sell so many consoles, its all from the ps1 and ps2 days, I've heard parents walk into a games store talking about playstation as a "generic" word for "console"
its pur ignorance and if you ask me, the 360's games catalogue is getting stronger and stronger, and is 1,000,000% the better console
a million percent the better console?! are u on crack motherf**ker?! there has been literally MILLIONS of 360 that have broke down. now how can that be the better console? let alone by a million percent? ya mad crackhead!
a million percent the better console?! are u on crack motherf**ker?! there has been literally MILLIONS of 360 that have broke down. now how can that be the better console? let alone by a million percent? ya mad crackhead!
so lets say the 360 was as reliable as the ps3 on the hardware side,
would you then admit 360 is better because the games are better ?? no you wouldn't, cos you're an idiot waiting for months for MGS whilst we play awesome games like mass effect

As a PS3 owner myself I can only feel embarassed for you and for any other PS3 owners as you are the sort of people that seem to be representing the PS3. You sound like an angry ignorant person who bought a PS3 based on the PS2's success rather than looking at what's in front of you. MS didn't do this out of desperation as you claim. They more than likley realised that they had little change of getting the game as an exclusive so instead went for the next best option, which is this exclusive content. Also from what we've seen, the 360 version will be the better version techincally since that's the build Rockstar have used for promotional purposes. Infact we have seen no footage what so ever from the PS3 version. So what I'm saying is that MS have been smart from a business standpoint as they have the larger userbase and can now claim that 360 is the only console to experience GTA 4 at it's best.
And no, Playstation consoles have never started off slow. They usually sell well from the get go and establish a healthy lead meaning they secure more backing from developers. Who does this remind you of this gen? 360...
Also, PS3 doesn't have that many games this year. It has MGS4 and that's it that you can say will make people buy a PS3. You then have the following; Tekken 6 - Will be ignored due to Soul Calibur 4 LBP - I think it looks great but its not an AAA game that will go on to sell alot Killzone 2 - Sequel to a crap/average FPS Resistance 2 - Same as above...
In my opinion 2009 is when PS3 will really challenge as I don't think 360 will have that many cards left to play apart from a Mass Effect and Bioshock sequels. Will PS3 beat 360 overall? I think so but at that point MS and Nintendo will have already started the next gen leaving Sony trailing yet again.

Exactly. Its because of these people im ashamed I own one. If I got rid of my PS3 it wouldnt be because of the lack of games or messed up 360 ports but because of nobs like him. A console that gathers a fanbase this bad is very offputting. Its same with cars, clothing etc - I wouldnt buy a Corsa as 90% of the people who have them are chavs. I wouldnt buy a PS3 now because 90% of owners are complete snooker cues

u call it "trailing" but if sony go on to win, as u predict, is it really trailing? it just down to new console buzz. MS were so desperate to get that head start with the 360, their customers today are paying for that.
tekken will be ignored for soul calibur.. your a f**king idiot.
tekken and gran turismo were what sold millions of PS's. and im sure MSG. all three are out in 2008. no need to wait till 2009 to challange xbox, espeicially since ps3 is outselling it NOW, without they big 3 games. add in GTA4 to that as well, despite all MS efforts, do we really think that GTA4 isnt going to help flog an absolute ton of ps3's?! people see it as a PS title, and they like the PS pad for it.
Wow. How f*cked up are you. Did your Mommy not breast feed you as a nipper?
what a f***y! i wouldnt buy a corsa cause there severely underpowered, only have 5 gears and have an engine u can hardly rev, looks like a bubble that would tip over at any hard turn, and 90% of the cars on the road are corsas!
noone actually sees u with a console. a big bit different to a car.
unless u see a console as an extension of your personality, like a lot of people do with their cars.. in which case.. LOSER!!!
You just missed my whole point. I was using the Corsa as an example not saying I actualy want one because its a good car.
& I dont care if people dont see it. I know myself that its a console that has snooker cues as its fanbase, therefore I cant be happy to own one or actualy have any desire to keep it.
MS got in 1st for a reason, and I think its paying off.
sony took the p*ss with delays and the pricing and if you ask me the whole launch was just a mess, believe me, I'll buy a PS3 when it really does blow me away, but right now, I'm very happy with my 360.
these games should be all out within 12 months
GTA IV (plus Episodic content) Mass Effect (DL Content) Resident Evil 5 Ninja Gaiden II gears Of Wars II Soul Calibur IV Rainbow Six Vegas II Fable II Sar Wars Force Unleashed Left For Dead Bully : Scholarship Edition Unreal Tournament III Rock Band Brothers In Arms : Hells Highway Splinter Cell : Conviction Dark Sector Alone In The Dark Too Human Battlfeild : Bad Company Halo Wars Banjo Kazooie Tom Clancy's Endwar Far Cry 2 Alan Wake
i couldnt give two f**ks about anyone else who owns the same console as me - there are (really) only 2 to choose from! cars there are 1000's to choose from, and the one you choose reflects you a lot more than a games console does!

I dont normaly care who has the same console as me but when one fanbase is this bad, it does make me think. & last time I checked there was 3 consoles to choose from.
I still don't see what any of this has to do with exclusive GTA4 content....
Tekken 6 - personally, it surprises me that people are even into this franchise anymore - it's always been 'button bashey'. Beat-em-Ups in general are in decline - they certainly aren't the big titles that they once were, so I can only really see things like Street Fighter 4 being a true AAA title in that genre.
MGS - looks fantastic, to be fair; and it will sell PS3's....I still don't think that it'd get me interested in one, Splinter Cell took my attention on the original XBox as it wasn't hampered by a ridiculous amount of cut-scenes - hopefully, the next one won't have this problem.
GT5 - Will DEFINITELY sell PS3's, I'd have to say that this is the biggest in the PS3's line-up and it looks great. I'm just not so interested in racing games these days....but, it certainly looks as if it could eclipse the competition (even if Forza 2 is a great game)
But, on the 360 front, we have things like Left4Dead which is looking to be a seriously fantastic game - all of the previews have got me really excited by this one. We have Kazooie 3 coming which looks to be a highly anticipated title for most, plus we'll get all those that remember the N64 version wanting it. There's Alan Wake which I've been dieing for these past months - can't wait to see how it pans out. Plus, we still have Gears of War 2 - 'nuff said!
But, this isn't a war! - can we not just get on with enjoying games???.....seriously, when Sony starts announcing games that get me excited - I'll go straight out and buy a PS3....you can't honestly tell me that all the fanboys would stick to their brand loyalty and miss out on some great games? - like biteing your nose off to spite your face....
a £200 console for one game. worth it if the console was reliable? easily.. im not prepared for it to pack in one day though. or even to be honest just the thought/possibility of it doing so.
I have to agree - the build of the 360 is shocking (if all the return stories are true & not exagerated - seeing as though Ive still got a launch model that hasnt gone wrong at all yet). Like I said before - I wish MS would have put less money into exclusives like this & into sorting out the hardware. It would get them just as many sales.
Its same with cars, clothing etc - I wouldnt buy a Corsa as 90% of the people who have them are chavs. I wouldnt buy a PS3 now because 90% of owners are complete snooker cues
id be gutted if i bought another 360 and it went t**s up (as i was playing GTA). a downloadable mission, less so.
So don't then....no one is forcing you to, but, quit bitching about it on forums and cut the language out - it just makes you look even more bitter.
Aww, leave him be- I'm finding the nobend to be unbelievably amusing.
And I'm not even bothered with GTA.
(By the way my 360 will be 2 years old in a few weeks- working fine so far- now allow me to extend my middle finger and wave it in your general direction).
It also sounds like this is just going to be a few bolt on missions. If the game is as well planned and thought out as R* are claiming extra content wont add too much. I think Microsoft just paid 50 million dollars for some bragging rights and not much actual content.
Given R*'s pride in the GTA series and the price Microsoft have paid, I doubt that it'll be just "a few bolt on missions". Although I don't know what it is they would add aswell as missions.
u call it "trailing" but if sony go on to win, as u predict, is it really trailing? it just down to new console buzz. MS were so desperate to get that head start with the 360, their customers today are paying for that.
I don't think that will happen - the head start that Microsoft managed to gain over the release of the PS3 is a crucial factor in seeing it's share of the market drop. And this headstart will most probably last into the next generation of consoles as the PS3 is fairly future proof Sony won't feel the need to make a "PS4" or whatever at the time of a new Xbox.
i know 8 people with xbox's, x5 of them have had to have replacements. this has put me off from buying an xbox..simply the end of the discussion. if your car broke down after driving a extended distance every time, would you go and buy that car again?no. the xbox is great..alot of ppl i know have 1..so playing cod4 online against them would be fun..but i just didnt want to risk it breaking like so many times before. As for the games..come on..they are all the same now. both consoles get exactly the same games..there is no difference. I bought a ps3 so i can use linux\UT3\MGS and final fantasy games.
It would be great if R*s' episodic XBLA content was GTA3: Revisited. Basically, replaying GTA3 in GTA4's version of Liberty City. I mean the storyline and content is already there. All you would have to do is redo the art of the all major and some minor GTA3 characters, relocate some of missions from missing locations and dole out further compensation for music and voice acting.
In all probability it would be cheaper or at least cost the same to bring GTA3 to GTA4, than 10-20 hours of new content. The GTA3 storyline would basically be the same, but the inclusion GTA4's visuals and gameplay mechanics would create a whole new experience. It would also be nice if latter episodic content reintroduces some of the continuity that the GTA series is known for, but is supposedly missing in GTA4.
Reintroducing Claude as the protagonist with Niko now the major antagonist of the story, would do a lot to mesh the world of GTA3 and GTA4 together, where only 7 years separate the two timelines. Characters like 8 ball, one arm Phil and Donald Love could be established, and some storylines resolved such as Love Media and the Leone family.
As a sole PS3 owner, I find many of the comments made embarrassing. Why folk have to keep squabbling over which console is 'best' escapes me as I'm often too busy having fun on my console to care
I personally hope that 360 owners enjoy their GTAIV experience as much as I will on my PS3.
If MS want to pay Rock* 50mil for some bragging rights, and some extra DL content, lol... great!
If 360 owners want to spend more money on a few extra missions, why should I (or any other PS3 owner) care?
To Vercetti: Chill, and just be happy that you have bought a nice bit of kit - YOU know that its a good-un and that the best is yet to come... If other people think otherwise, then don't let it worry you.
