In one of the most surprising announcements over the past few days, Commodore Gaming has confirmed to us that old Commodore 64 games are on their way to the Wii.
Later on this year, Wii owners will be able to pay 500 Wii points for the privilege of playing games that cost around £1.99 when they first hit the shelves back in the days where games came on cassettes. So you'll almost be paying double for the privilege.
We know saying that makes us sound like the type of retired person who gives shop assistants lectures about how they remember when a can of coke used to be 20p. But still, are the games really worth paying now?
The first games arriving through the service will be International Karate and Uridum, (see each here and here on YouTube respectively). Why not IK Plus?
For the record, we'd be willing to part with 500 Wii points for the following: Creatures, Creatures 2, Mayhem in Monsterland and Exile. Add your own ones below.
WIZBALL!!!!!!!!!! Ah the memories of playing it for weeks on end when I was at school instead of doing homework and getting nowhere near close to ever finishing it. Still, 500 points seems a bit steep and doubt I'll add many C64 games to my download collection for that much
Bah, if they were gonna go that far back they'd have been better going for the Amiga 500 or Atari ST.
But it's gonna be hard not just giving up all my points to play Dizzy games again. I wouldn't fight it if they were the Amiga versions, but since I had them for my Speccy it seems a bit dumb to buy the exact same version again.
Does the VC version also emulate the 5+ min loading times as well? Can it be an option? I miss the red/blue and blue/yellow lines. And the noise of colour being added to the loading picture.
The Eidolon please. and Dropzone. erm and Way of the Exploding Fist. Oh and there was a sci-fi Alien rip off that only came out on disk. That as well. Oh and nearly forgot Last Ninja.
Pft. Anyone who remembers those games has them on tape or emulator and those who don't, won't care. Even if they'd made it a Spectrum, it'd still not be that great a deal.
I don't have a problem paying 500 Wii Points for the games myself. Lords of Midnight, Paradroid and The Way of The Exploding Fist would be top of my list.
And I really don't know where people are getting this Ł1.99 for a game from...the only games available at that price were budget games by the likes of Mastertronic and Codemasters as far as I remember. The best games were available for around a tenner I think.
I'd also like to see Speccy games available too, was the best computer out of the two imo with some classic and quality games.
Hmmm....Slightly Magic, CJ elephant, Steg the Slug, Seymour, Popeye, Winter Games, Paperboy, Hell i even remember playing Postman Pat when i was about 4.
As for 500 points a piece i think thats a bit steep personally.
Creatures 2 Torture Trouble! What a game takes me back to being a kid. I might even buy a Wii just for this game. Tried finding it for download on the internet but couldn't get 1 that worked. I want it, I want it now
It was known a year and half ago C64 games were coming out along with MSX and Master System, hardly a shock...anyway Back then it was also said games were gonna come in packs of 5 for the points, obviously this is gone by the wayside...there is no way I'm paying 500 points for one c64 game, the VC is really overpriced compared to xbox live and PSN games, i mean you get PS1 games on PSN for Ł3.49 each, whats 500 points on VC Ł3.50? so you are gonna tell me a C64 game is teh same value as a PS1! Sort it out Nintendo..
I was just about to say Paradroid. Also what about Emilyn Hughes International Soccer, Microprose Soccer (with the crazy bananna kicks and wicked action replay), Last Ninja Series.........
Aggghh C64 on virtual console for 500 points ouch, robber baron Nintendo up to its tricks again. Yeah over charge not forgotten their cart price fixing which the EU fined them for but did the consumer get a rebate no of course not. Disenchanted with Nintendo this generation as you can tell, if I see more mini-games dressed up as a Wii/DS game will scream!!!
Damn Zack & Wiki, Wii Fit aaaahahahhhhahaaahhhhhhhhh!!!

Yep, a tenner, or more for later games. Would help if C&VG got a basic fact correct.

yep i remember ocean games being a tenner. batman the movie was Ł12.99. there's far too many great c64 games to remember but the last ninja series and either retrograde or the original turrican would be great. (yes i know its coming out on xboxlive)
Beach Head 1 & 2 Raid Over Moscow The Last Ninja Impossible Mission Pitstop 2 Trap Door Turrican Creatures Attack of The Mutant Camels IK+ Bruce Lee The Eidolon
Right gonna stop there cos I could be at this all day...
i'm stunned that nobody has mentioned IMPOSSIBLE MISSION this has to be the all time c64 classic and i still have the original tape in a draw downstaires and it must catch my eye at least once a week. the gameplay still stands up today and one of the only c64 games to have perefect speech. STAY A WHILE.....STAY FOREVEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRR.

Ł12.99 was the standard price for full budgeted releases, but a lot of games came out for the C64 around the 1.99/2.99 label.
I was just about to say Paradroid. Also what about Emilyn Hughes International Soccer, Microprose Soccer (with the crazy bananna kicks and wicked action replay), Last Ninja Series.........
Speaking of Paradroid, what about Uridium? By the same people.
I want the games that came with it on the cartridge. Klax, Flimbos Quest and that circus game.
Ah yes someone else thinks fondly of the cartridge. I didn't have that, I had Robocop 2 on cartridge, it was rock hard. I never knew anyone lese who had a cartridge game.
Also sly spy needs to be on there along with Slik worm, still one of best 2 player games IMO.

Emilyn Hughes International Soccer! My god, first football game I ever owned.
I remember as a YOUNG kid, renaming a team which included about 5 friends' names, and then making up the numbers with players called DAD, MUM, NAN etc... and the player named NAN adopting a brilliant tactic of just running around the player with the ball in a circle, never making a tackle, which was unintentionally a fantastic impression of my real Nan!
Will be worth it, just for the amazing music C64 games had, now that the C64 is on the virtual machine, i want amiga and ST aswell, amiga was a great platform, best of the 16bit era
My list is nearly endless from those days, although my knowledge of C64 games isn't as good as the Speecy. Here's some of them.
Dizzy (all of them) Pro Mountain Bike Simulator Bounty Bob Trap Door Nonterraqueous
There was also one where you played a white bird and you had to fly around a big maze thing solving object-based puzzles. You had to control your heart rate too or you'd die. But I can't remember the name! I think it started with P but can't be sure. I'm sure it was a heart-related term too.
Hell yeah! My God! I thought I was the only one! I LOVED that game! Flick some switches and get out before the time ran out. It was like a better version of Manic Miner.
There are just so many games I loved - all the Microprose games like: Gunship, F19 Stealth Fighter, and Airborne Ranger. Kickstart was awesome. Airwolf was too hard!
Paradroid is definitely a must though - I'm amazed that we haven't seen an updated version of it...or did I miss it???

I beg to differ. While full price games were between Ł8.99 and (a bit later) Ł14.99, many of the best games were in the budget Ł1.99 range. Dizzy, and most of it's sequels, being a prime example of this.
Speaking of Paradroid, what about Uridium? By the same people.
Or, same person to be precise - Andrew Braybrook. For his time, the guy was a consummate genius and creator of some of the most original games ever... not unlike, a postmodern Kojima of today.
Anyway, moving onto topic. I remember being amazed by playing Elite on this thing. What a game, with its wireframe 3D and infinite (well it seems like anyway) universe, trading, salvaging. Truly Epic. I also liked Beach Head II a lot for multiplayer, and god knows how many other games (Chiller, Commando, Defender of the Crown, Knight Games 2, Monty of the Run, Myth, Morpheus, Sargon, Way Of the Exploding Fist, et tal), But those really do stand out.
The C64 had more soul and history than just about any other computer ever. Sure, a LOT of crap was released on it too, but that goes for every format. That >1% that was good, was really good because the base was so large. Looking back it's amazing what Hubbard, Martin Galway, Thomas Mogensen, Jeroen Tel and a handful of others managed to squeeze out of a tiny waveform synthesizer with 3 channels and a few K of memory. Especially so, when you consider that nearly all of the music on the C64 sounded like ass.

Thought I was alone We should start a Big Mac club. that and kickstart are the only games id pay 500 points for

Then your too young to remember the good ole days. I can remember when new games went from Ł1.99 to Ł2.99!!
I want the games that came with it on the cartridge. Klax, Flimbos Quest and that circus game.
f**kin HELL man, i've not thought about about those games for a long time. They were the first computer games i ever played in my life. For the life of me i can't think what the circus game was called but it was f**kin great. Also had batman and robocop on cartridge(BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES)
Also had TRACKSUIT MANAGER and MULTI-PLAYER SOCCER MANAGER. Anyone remember them gems.
