Sony comes out fighting

Marketing man predicts competing consoles are doomed
Sony marketing bigwig Scott Steinberg has set the tone for Hardware Wars 2008 confidently predicting that consoles competing with PlayStation 3 are effectively doomed to also-ran status.

In an interview with Next-Gen, Steinberg said that the resolution of the Blu-ray vs HD DVD war had brought an end to any doubt that PlayStation 3 would emerge triumphant. The full interview will be published here in a few days, but here are a couple of snippets.

"Third party publishers and developers are moving away from using Xbox 360 as their primary development platform. They understand that developing on PlayStation 3 first makes more sense and, in fact, will make the Xbox 360 version look better."

"In three years, the Wii will really start to look its age graphically and, will seem to consumers, pretty long in the tooth."

"Since CES there's been some high fives, in the office, sure. But we're not ready to say it (the hardware war) is over. Perhaps in a year we'll be able to look back at this time and recognize that it was our Berlin Wall moment; the moment when consumers made their choice."

"Microsoft have had their window to build up a lead, but when we track sales of Xbox 360 against comparable time since launch sales of the original Xbox, there isn't much difference, so I think that opportunity has passed for them, and it looks like they haven't expanded beyond their core of shooter players."

We'll have more in this vein in a few days when the full interview is posted.

talk about full of yourself....he says that but i dont think the wii is doomed in the slightest, and if there isnt much diffrence between the numbers sold since launch in the specific time perioud for ps3 and 360 then in the specific time perioud more..well its goona be just about equal..in fact most people will have all 3 consoles or just two depending on gameing prefrance and if you give a damn about HD movies, though xbox live downloads are another good way, i think in time maybe ps3 may overtake, but i see this time being a tie..xbox has the games, ps3 has the blu ray movies and disks, wii is for family and casual gamer fun and is more a gadget, which perants appreciate more than the other consoles.

Wait a minute. The Wii's graphics look poor against the PS3 now but it doesn't stop Nintendo from out selling the PS3 by 3:1. The PSP is a fine example, a more powerful system let down by the poor same old games. Until Sony gets it into the thick 'we know what gamers want' heads and put original fun games onto the PS3, then Nintendo will continue to kick Sony's butt, and even though I am quite fond of my PS3, seeing Sony eat there words will make me a very happy man indeed.

( sorry for the rant,I'm still p*ssed about the EA news! Twisted Evil )

I think it'll be the big games this year that will decide things(GTA/MGS/GOW2), and maybe whoever can get a sub Ł150 console into the shops first too. Wink

same here ^^^.
the war might not be in sony's favour if those b@st@rds at EA do a hostile takeover. because if they did, i can see MS making a take over bid of EA, if they refused.... who has got more money, EA, or MS. hostile take over. i dont think sony would fight back by outbidding MS, EA are s**te, sony would have to swallow the fact they'd lose gta. but at the same time, if EA started to make it itd be w@nk anyhow.

I think they believe every word of it Razz

Bluray beating poor toshiba in the hi-def race will certainly help shift more ps3's in the coming months, but the interest will die down eventually unless some decent games are released for the machine.
That's still what people will aim to buy the ps3 for, the games.

Sony need to up their game on the software front, because they've been rubbish.
Start focusing on that and stop waffling about bloody boring bluray films Razz

What this guy is saying kinda makes some sense...
Xbox has always been great at getting the hardcore market.
Nintendo has always been great at getting the casual market.
What has Playstation been good at? Getting the hardcore and casual market.

PS1, PS2 all highly successful consoles with library that range from horror, RPG, action, platformer, FPS, everything under the sun.

I think Playstation division has some things under their selves.. hardcore, and casual... hmmm

i dont think i agree with you for catching the casual and hardcore gameing market, though i would agree i guess they have caught a bit of everything but not in gameing wise..more film wise more than anything, the gameing front of the ps3 needs to kick it up a notch to get sell more only if the games improve and have more immpressive exclusives to bring under there belt then it would sell as well as previous apart from its price. so far it just doesnt have the libary of games the previous ps had which made them so great. when it gets that it may very well dominate or be very equal.

Its more PR b******s.

I wish Sonys execs would read some the crap thats being said.

If the PS3 truly relies on blu rays success then its finnished. I diddnt (nor did anyone else i know) purchase one for BR. We want games Sony, GAMES!!!, not movies, not silly micro transactions, GAMES, G.A.M.E.S. And most of the good ones, particularly from the smaller devs, are going to both X360 and PS3. PS3 has NO clear advantage over the 360.

The Wii is selling twice as much as the PS2 over the same time frame and i think its terrifying them. They have managed to turn the biggest game franchise EVER and run it into the ground within months.

Im sure with their HUGE pockets and the right staff they can come second, but there going to have to actually DO IT rather than talk about it.

pointless, pointless i tells ya all. dont listen to these marketing machine tanks.

sony, you just keep working on those development tools that allow developers to make better and better games for the great the PS3 machine (which i use all the time).

microsoft, you just keep making those games and better hardware, i love my xbox360 but ive had to replace my machine xbox360 three times!!!

I'll have to do that, never posted in the setup thread that was created a while ago.

I'll have to take 2 pics as the Amiga shares a monitor with the PC which is away from the other machines.

Only bad thing is I want a Panasonic 3DO but have nowhere to put one Crying or Very sad I'd have to connect it every time I want to play it if I did get one.

When will sony and the fanboys learn that THIS generation isnt going to be about the number of consoles sold but the number of people using them.

If we take it from a purely gaming perspective than the PS3 has still got a LONG way to go to surpass the 360. On average the 360 has around 7 full price games per console compared to just 3 for PS3. The percentage of peopleplaying online is also higher on the 360 at the moment even though its a premium service.

There is no doubt at all that the PS3 will dominate the BD market but in terms of games and gaming devs are pretty much all going multi-platform.

Also a lot of publishers will insist that devs use the platform they can get the game out on quickest. If its taking a good 12months longer to get the game out on the PS3 than the 360 due to development issue than there is no way in hell publishers are going to let the PS3 dictte a gmes release. If they can make a game on 360, ship it and start making money straight away why would they bother adding months, and money, allowing devs to concentrate on PS3 first? Yeah...some devs are top-notch now when working on PS3 (although i can only really think of driving gams at th moment) but the vast ammount just find it easierto develop on 360.

The fact is that the 360 has the games at the moment. Looking at the forthcoming years and releases due i STILL cant see reason to warrent forking out 200quid for another console, especially with FFXIII unlikely to see an 08 release.

Much as this guy is clearly a c**k, I do agree that MS has lost the initiative. Xbox 360 (which I own) had a fabulous 2007, and MS should have kicked Sony when it was down. At the moment, PS3 (which I've ordered) feels like it has the momentum.

Ball's in your court, Microsoft...

(I've no idea about the Wii. I've got one and it's great for Wii Sports and Mario Galaxy, but there's not much coming that interests me. But surely the audience that Nintendo is aiming for don't care about graphics??)

I think Sony missed some facts:

-On Wii people dont care about the graphics. Right now the most played titles arent anywhere near beeing the prettiest on the system.

-The 360 sells well, and this is not because of the hd-disc format. I dont think the blu-ray is so much better than the dvd, that people are really consider this when buying a gaming console.

My personal guess: Wii wins, just because of the huge amount of casual-player. PlayStation 3 wins in Europe. Xbox 360 stays ahead in america. But combined, I guess PS3 will be ahead of the 360... But who knows...
DNCDante on 25 Feb '08
I really do wish that these marketing prats would shut the f**k up. Consumers have proved time and time again that they are just not interested in fancy graphics and are much more concerned with fun, social gaming.

It really does border pathetic that these so-called 'intellegent suits' are still dismissing the Wii off as a passing fad. No doubt they will still be doing so three years down the line when it's still the market leader.

Sega's never gonna happen (sadly) - the failure of the Dreamcast was it's death knell in terms of consoles.

We're more likely to see an EA format, all the IPs they have could support one. Though it's quality would certainly be questionable... Smile

Yeah I know Sad Sega won't enter the hardware market again due to how well they're doing as a software only outfit. It's a shame as they were at their best (from a gameplay and innovation perspective) when they were making Sega games on a Sega machine.

It's a shame we won't see the Amiga name again on any hardware either. Commodore passed on everything to Escom which passed on everything to Gateway. I wonder if Gateway is still sitting on all the Amiga rights? Confused

Oh well at least one of the brands I grew up with is still around. Hopefully my kids will know what Nintendo is when the time comes.

I agree, there was so much first party stuff on the Dreamcast that was brilliant, and totally different experiences - from Crazy Taxi to Shenmue.

Well after the extremely successful CPC series of computers someone decided it was a good idea to make this and then this.

Yes the PS2 launch year line up was diabolical, so far the PS3 has had better games than them but still in my own opinion the 360's launch year line up was one of the best I have seen of any console in recent years. Basically depends what sort of games you are after really.

Sony resorting to their PR boasting again? Haven't they learned ANYTHING?!

Having said that, Microsoft are in danger of letting them back in the door. Sony are finally starting to make some right moves with the PS3, whereas MS insist on continuing to have a 'charge for everything' policy. If they could get away with it, they'd charge for the air going through the Xbox's vents & call it Live Heat or some b******s. They are seriously testing the patience of gamers - I know a lot of my friends with 360s are getting p**sed off.

As for the Wii, it's certainly in grave danger of not reaching its potential as a gaming machine, but I don't think its popularity is under threat; certainly the graphics are largely irrelevant. What is the single biggest platform out there? The DS. The graphics on that don't even match last gen consoles and yet it continues to fly off the shelves.

Additionally, in 3 years time, the PS3's graphics will look decidedly average compared to what PCs will be cranking out.

Microsoft are, and always have been, money grabbing bastards. I'd dearly like more things to be free - DLC being a prime example.

The expectation of hand held graphics is much MUCH lower than that of the consoles. To the point where handheld graphics are irrelevant. Console graphics will never be, despite most people considering gameplay to be more important.
_Marty_ on 25 Feb '08
Although it could easily be waved away as ocmplete BS i think this has some credibility, PS3 sales are up, and is getting some great games. It will take time for the multi platform games made using the PS3 to be available but that will help too. Though they've exaggurated a bit i guess.

I think Nintendo went the right way this gen by not creating a console for tech whores.

They did so before with the GC and N64 and although all did well it didn't help them to sleep on piles of money at nights like they are now. Laughing

The 2 consoles for tech whores seem to be competing and both are looking good so far with titles for this year.

Though it will help. I think Blu-Ray has came too early, i can easily wait five years, but the PS3 will still be around then. As more people get HDTV's (showing they do want the shinyness) they'll want High Def movies too. And the PS3 is a cheap Blu-Ray player. Yeah, i doubt it will do wonders for Sony, because the leap from DVD to Blu Ray is not needed as much, and not as necessary as the VHS to DVD leap (it feels forced) but people do tag along. People will buy it for the Blu-Ray player which to Sony is a buy none-the-less.

It won't exactly be a nail in the coffin for Microsoft, they'll continue normally i imaigne without it, but it will rise Sony sales a bit.

As for sony coming out on top, there is a long time left, and although they won't dominate, anything is possible. I can't imagine Wii sales being this strong for the next five years, 360 and Sony need to play catch up.

I would definitely say that it's true that the Xbox360 brand almost stereotypically seems to be associated with shooters- because that's what the Xbox360 boards almost always talk about and what XboxLive is almost entirely about. Even though they have Rare on board, a developer who can really produce distinctive colourful games out of the Xbox360, they get mentioned relatively little unless it's to say how Perfect Dark Zero is worse than the N64 Perfect Dark.

The PS3 can only start to get ahead of the Xbox360 if it stops trying to be so 'gritty' in its choice of games and makes more classic adventure games. It's not Killzone 2 we need, it's Uncharted 2.

Sony and M$ are so busy waving their willies around and Nintendo just keep quiet and sell loads.

They are all as bad as each other, doesnt matter what system you have, its what you like that counts, not what BS these guys spout!!
