Race Driver: Grid developer Peter Shea has spoken out on handheld console publishers who blame shoddy titles on the nature of the platform.
Shea and Firebrand Games previously developed Race Driver: Create and Race, which was noted for in-depth options and features that would rival a traditional console game.
"I think it's a mistake to think of handheld games as being cheaper or smaller versions of 'proper console games'," Shea told us. "For one thing, they're not that much cheaper, and should still provide £30/$50 worth of entertainment and features.
"It annoys me as a games consumer that many publishers seem to think it's okay to treat a portable title on DS, as if it were a mobile phone game, or a PSOne game.
"The graphics on DS titles may not be of the same complexity as the last generation of consoles, but that doesn't mean to say the gameplay and features cannot be."

Very well said indeed. There is quite a large market for handheld games, and developer really do need to push the boat a little. Ł30 is the price of the average PC game, and most handheld games have yet to deliver as much worthwhile content as even the worse PC games. I'm not expecting a full-on console/pc game on DS, but I am expecting them to live up to their PC game price tags.
The lazier devs out there should take note & I totally agree with what he said regarding the value aspect handheld games are not that much cheaper than full console games so why should they be feature light versions?
Well said. Its true. They treat the DS like that and the Wii like a PS2. Get it together people!!
Actually aside from the control system and better on-line integration it is pretty fair to treat the Wii like the PS2 as in technical capabilty they are pretty equal. However, the issue really is that developers aren't treating the Wii like the PS2 and are rushing out sub-PS2 tat and hoping the control gimmick will see them through to profit.

Er, what? How are the PS2 and Wii same in tech specs? The Wii is Gamecube 2.5 and the GC was more powerful than the PS2. I couldn't see the PS2 do games like Metroid Prime or F-Zero GX
Nice statement. Really sticks it to slacker devs. If he can follow that up with some kickass titles this guy will really be one to keep an eye on in the future.
Now can we get him to say the same thing about the Wii?
