Crackdown put down?

No sequel from original developer, says US mag...
Now this we don't like the sound of. According to the rumour column of US magazine EGM, a sequel to the awesome (but a bit on the short side) Crackdown will not be happening any time in the near future. Nor will will likely happen by the same developer, err, if it ever happens. Clear?

EGM (via 1up) writes: "A Crackdown sequel looks like it won't happen any time soon. Sure, Microsoft has danced around the idea of making another addictive orb-hunting shooter, but Q-mann says even if Crackdown 2 does come to fruition, original developer Realtime Worlds probably won't be making it. Well, at least Realtime Worlds' upcoming game, APB, looks like it will keep our minds off those damn orbs...for now."

Hit the link above for word on an EA martial arts game if you like your rumours thick and fast.

Nooooooo!!! Crying or Very sad Crackdown is fantastic & a sequal would have been brilliant just to iron out its few flaws & put a proper mission mode in.
Its a damn shame

Crackdown was a great game but to be honest I'm quite happy there shelving it, APB looks like the future to me.

Cops & Robbers. Online. Hell yeah.

I think we might have to wait a while for it but if the article below is anything to go by, who cares?
Take your time Realtime.

Not every game makes a decent franchise. There are plently awesome NES / SNES / MD games that were one-offs and were probably better for it.

But, its a sad day for gaming when games like Crackdown can't get a sequel, but games like The Sims can have hundreds.

I honestly don't know how I am going to enjoy GTA4 after playing Crackdown, knowing that my character can't jump over buildings or ground stomp baddies.

Well not for people like myself who couldnt give a flying monkeys about online based games.
I take it they are just tacking a singleplayer mode on or not including it at all?

Now that is a real shame! This game thoroughly deserves a sequel, what the hell are they thinking?

I understand what your saying, online gaming isnt for everyone. I think that what Realtime are trying to do with a console MMO though is quite groundbreaking, by the sounds of it APB is taking up all their time and resources.

APB is easily one of my most anticipated games of 08/09.

Basically GTA online.

I don't understand how this is a sudden news-worthy revelation. This is from an IGN article dated September last year:

Speaking to Develop Magazine, producer Phil Wilson said the team is "heartbroken" that there won't be a Crackdown 2 but "Microsoft were a little late in stepping up to the plate to ask for Crackdown 2, and by then we had already started working on bigger, better things".

So this supposed exclusive "rumour" is just a rehash of old information.

APB? Is that a remake of the classic?

I'm not interested in Online modes anymore either. I saw the screen shots for APB and thought it looked awesome. After reading about it, I lost interest. It doesn't sound like there will be much, if anything offline.

A Crackdown sequel would have been worthwhile checking out if they made the map much bigger and gave it a story. I did enjoy Crackdown for the few hours that it lasted. I did carry on playing for many hours afterwards but that was because I wanted to get all the bloody orbs and that made it more frustrating than fun, especially finding the last few. Mad

Whatever floats your boat and all that. I dont think there is going to be much(if any)offline mode in APB, I suppose if your not into online you'll always have Prototype.

APB for me though:
"Here is where APB is so clever. The servers automatically match a similarly skilled set of enforcement agents to deliver the APB to in a dynamic form of matchmaking. You'll never have a clue who you'll get matched up with. It's all done automatically based on stats."

APB does sound like it will be a good if you're into online stuff. I've just gone off it completely. I used to play online all the time, then I started to get p****d off with all the little idiots so I started playing with just my friends, then I just stopped all together.

Prototype could be good, I'm looking forward to GTA IV the most though.

Have to agree that GTA IV is one my most anticipated games this year too, if your going to miss the the fun of Crackdown though; jumping buildings, throwing bad guys for miles the Prototype should fill that gap.
StonecoldMC on 27 Feb '08
That's a shame. The original was great fun and it was innovative in regards to the online co-op, which made the game that much better.
If I remember correctly the game was also a million seller but I guess MS will save the sequel for the next Xbox so they can put a Halo 4 BETA in it... Rolling Eyes

Yeah - must admit that I'm really looking forward to all 3 of those titles. APB is a great idea in the hands of a great developer, Prototype really could be one of the big titles this year - looks fantastic and GTA4....well, you guys already know!

It's a shame for Crackdown though, I'd heard that Realtime had to knock Microsoft back when it came to a sequel - so, it's not a huge surprise to me.

Maybe we'll see the follow-up next gen? - it's too good a title to not have it's name brought up a few times when discussing future projects....hopefully it'll be Realtime that eventually do it

Smile

Remember--CVG needs to take digs at the XBox 360 whenever possible to satisfy their ignorant fanboi agenda. Rehashing old information, spinning it into something negative toward the XBox 360, and putting it out there as 'news' is par for the course anymore with CVG...

...too bad too, because people used to respect this site, even on our side of the pond. Now they're just as bad as Kotaku, Joystiq...or dare I say it...Gamespot. Neutral
