HMV pulls Play TV pre-orders

"Informed by supplier" that Play TV "no longer has a scheduled release date"
HMV has cancelled pre-orders for Sony's Play TV after apparently being informed by its "supplier" that the product "no longer has a scheduled release date".

Customers were able to pre-order Play TV - a digital TV receiver and recorder for PS3 - for £99.99, dated for a March 28 release.

Those orders, however, have now been cancelled, with email notifications going out to customers.

"Unfortunately we have been informed by our supplier that this title no longer has a scheduled release date," reads HMV's notice.

"We are really sorry for any disappointment caused and we will email you with details if and when this item becomes available to pre-order again"

Retailers have been known to take pot-shot guesses at release dates. But if HMV got its intel directly from Sony, this suggests plans to release Play TV in March have been delayed.

Sony is yet to announce any official price or dates for Play TV. Looks like we won't be getting it anytime soon then.

Thanks to CVG reader Gareth for the tip.

£100 for a freeview receiver what a joke
dandoc2 on 27 Feb '08
well after seeing a video with it up and running in some bbc blog i imagine it's pretty close or at least it would be if reports of it not recording tv programmes whilst playing games which is probably the main reason for the delay.

As for the price tag i imagine it's hmv making a rough guess but who know's sony did try and charge £425 for a ps3 once Smile

It's not good to be unable to provide a release date, that smacks of something serious going on. A technical problem cropping up, a supplier pulling out or a lack of funding to get the product onto the shelves.

Let's see if a "strategic alliance" is announced...

HMV are a load of s**t anyways, in the March issue of Empire, in their game release scheduel (which is supplied by HMV) it said that RESIDENT EVIL 5 was out on MARCH 28th!!!

YEAH RITE HMV! give us a break!

£99 for a tv recorder that records on an existing hardrive? Laughing You can buy a 60gb digital tv recorder with built in top up tv for the same price! wtf
timewarp1 on 27 Feb '08
I think £100 is way off the mark and no-one I know would buy into it at that price, hopefully around £50-£60 is a better option, but that fact it may be delayed doesn't surprise me one bit, usual BS from Sony these days!

Just a thought, but most add-on console hardware these days tends to have to wait until there's a firmware update to allow the console to operate it properly...

Play TV will use the PS3 to upscale normal TV - would be interested to see what that looks like.
