With a game as stupidly popular and successful as Counter-Strike, the question is never 'Will there be a sequel?' But, 'When?'.
Valve Software, the developer housed in a red building entirely comprised of $50 bills (may be a lie), knows this too: "We will never abandon Counter-Strike," marketing man Doug Lombardi told Shack News, explaining why the online shooter hasn't received a major update since the release of Counter-Strike Source.
"It's a little bit unfair to compare Counter-Strike, I think, to your classic game that's gonna have these sequels. It looks a little bit more like an MMO where it's constantly [being updated]."
But Lombardi did reveal that the developer is at least thinking about how they'd approach a sequel:
"With Counter-Strike 2," he said, "there's a big question between, do we go start over from scratch and build this whole new game, do we do something that looks more like Team Fortress 2 that is rooted in the old game but has a ton of new stuff, or do we just sort of take everything that's new that we've released and put that out in a new box." We'd go for the middle one.
"I think we're leaning more towards the two more radical places than just sort of rolling up the new box and reskinning the box and putting out all the new stuff."
The Valve team also recently confirmed (by accident) that a second Portal game is in the works (and Lombardi has since officially stated to CVG that "more Portal is coming"), so combined with the Counter-Strike sequel and Half-Life 2: Episode Three, could we be looking at the early stages of what might be an Orange Box Two?
"I just don't think that [Counter-Strike 2] would be a good fit [with a second Orange Box]," piped in Valve overlord Gabe Newell, noting that CS2 would be a stand-alone game to him.
"But if I get 15,000 emails from customers in response to this interview telling me 'Of course it should be in [the next Orange Box],' then of course we'll pay attention to that." We think he'll regret saying that...
counter strike is awesome. absolutely loved source. it deserves to be a game by itself, not some tacky, rushed extra. it needs a nice shiny box with counter strike slapped across the front of it. what the box NEEDS to lack on the front though, is an EA logo...
anyway i think we might see episode 3 and portal 2 packaged together. but thers no way cs2 would be with them, as it would have more than enough hype to sell by itself.
orange box 1 was more old scraps put together. these newer games wont all go into one box.
CS to play today feels like an old game. needs much more than a re-skinning.
CS is a fantastic game and the depth and mods for it is truly unbelievable. There are 1000s of custom maps, loads of custom game types from scoutzknivez, soccerknivez, surf, climb, dodgeball, zombie, awp, aim, rpg mod, gungame, etc loads of admin plugins from quakesounds to betting.
The amount of content in CS at the moment means that it doesn't need a new version yet, it's still fresh, evolving and is still very popular.
Whats about ? Maybe because im not english, but the sentence does not make sence without this parts - so why these brackets?
Those brackets mean that what is inside them isn't directly what the person said but it's what he was referring to.
For example if someone said "what do you think of orange box?" And I replied "it is good" then someone who was writting an article might want to say "Robzy said was good."
Orange box is in [] because i didn't say the word orange box but that's wot i was referring to...it's a poor example but it's all i can think of LOL
Surely Valve have been working on Episode 3 for a while now and will only have seriously been considering Portal 2 after the success of the first one. Knowing how long they take to polish their games I doubt they will be completed together.
Counter-strike 2 would certainly fit nicely in another Orange Box alongside Portal 2 and Episode 3. If it ever comes to the Xbox 360, then I'll snap it up for sure!
What??? The graphics in Orange Box are great! They may not be as technically superior to the likes of Crysis but the art direction is by far one of the best around. TF2 is probably one of my favourite looking games at the moment. Add to the fact that it runs on low end systems as well and still looks pretty good, then you have the perfect combination, which I would take over the ugly low graphics settings of Crysis, which still almost run like a slide show, any day.
A Counter Strike 2 could be a good idea, and certainly would sell very well. Never particularly liked CS myself but I do realise I'm in the minority. If they went off in a completely different style, as they did with TF2, then maybe my interest will rise, but either way I would probably give it a go.
Valve have shot themselves in the foot though. With such a fantastic deal given by the Orange Box, Ep 3 is going to have to include extras or else people are going to be disappointed (ungrateful gits.)
i think the orange box 2 is a great idea, but i am not sure valve would do it. the first ornage box was 10 years of developed games
they are into episodeic games at moment.
i hope they do , left for dead, portal 2 and episode 3 in one box.
Now thats just being greedy. Great idea, but very greedy.
Not greedy at all.
Left for Dead would probably have been released by months, hence just like HL2 and HL2:Ep1 in the Orange Box.
Other than that a CS2 game? CSS is still fresh, I prefer it over COD4. and seriously what new features could it include? Apart from advanced graphics and improved hitboxes I don't see any other means to better the gameplay.
I'd say CS2 would be better with HL3 (which means in the 2012 if not later - CSS is just enough)
I don't care how, they just need to get CS (source, or newer) on the Xbox 360 as soon as possible. I loved it on PC (since the beta days), and I loved it on the original xbox. Closest thing to it now is CoD 4 on Search and Destroy.
That sounds absolutely awesome if true, a huge lineup and a boxset that would certainly get G.O.T.Y. If it does happen and Valve are still not supporting the ps3 properly (if its even this gen) then i would expect a lot of 360 sales as this would rock.
CS2 will hopefully b awesome. I hope they release it on conole as well as PC, with optional keyboard and mouse usage just like UT3 on PS3. Which is quality. I haven't got around to buying or playing orange box yet!.............I know, shame on me!! but just bought a new car so got no money till payday in 3 WEEKS!!!!!
Bought the Orange Box a week ago and finish 4/5 games.Call me stupid but I thought the Apeture science facility was destroyed at the end of Portal so I don't get how there can be a Portal 2.Then again, during Episode 2 they did show a ship in the arctic or somewhere with the Apeture logos on it sooooo. . . . maybe we will get a Episode 3/Portal 2 mashup?
no duh there should be an orange box 2 but have counter strike 2 be the meat of the package instead of half life if portal 2 is long enough to make up for the lack of single player in episode 3 as if counterstrike even had a short single player campaign it would be among the best games ever besides i wouldn't buy portal 2 counterstrike 2 or episode 3 as standalone games. Then orange box three could be the last and best counterstrike 3 portal 3 team fortress 3 and half life 3
