Wii TV Friend Channel launches in Japan

Nintendo invents another channel we'll have to find a use for
Nintendo has released an interactive community TV Guide for the Wii in Japan today, dubbed the Wii TV Friend Channel.

This latest edition to the channel service brings a Freeview style menu system direct to your console. This displays a comprehensive list of TV shows you can watch by switching your Wii off and flicking the TV to another channel. Own goal, Nintendo?

You can also highlight interesting programs and use your Wii Remote as a TV remote, so you don't have to work out those arm muscles by putting one remote down and picking another up.

Of actual use is the interactive community features. If you've gone to the effort of matching up Friends Codes, you can see what your friends have highlighted and also check out their star rating for the shows.

Finally, you'll be able to register your mobile number and e-mail address if you want to receive alerts thirty minutes before a show begins, reminding you it's on.

A quote from Dragon's Den judge Peter Jones comes to mind. "You've invented a solution to a problem that doesn't exist!"

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the Wii TV Friend Channel currently has no release date for America or Europe.

Woo! Hurrah! Pointless!

Nice to see that they are spending their new-found wealth on the important stuff.....

I really fail to see the point in this, and don't see it being released here (if it is, it's pointless). Why would I bother going through a Wii channel to see what's on tv, when my television already has a TV guide built in? Why would anyone?

I can almost see they're trying to mould the Wii into some sort of essential lifestyle accessory, but maybe they should focus on more video-game related channels.

Dear Nintendo,
More money and time in getting smash bros released, less into things I already have with sky.

Thanks

This sounds even more pointless than the Mii rating channel thing (which I didn't download out of principle).

Bottom line here guys - if you think it's a waste of time, speak with your downloads. If you get it just because it's there, Nintendo will count that as another sale. The more people who don't download it, the more we can show them we don't want retarded stuff eating the already limited storage space.

You fail to understand the madness of the Japanese... They do after all like train simulators and have vending machines selling used panties! This channel is quite sensible in comparison.

They are a funny, sexually repressed bunch aren't they.
