Microsoft made "no real capitalisation" of its one-year head start over PS3, and failed to "reach beyond the core first person shooter player", SCEA's Scott Steinberg has said.
"The time that they had to create huge distance and build a massive install base before the PS3 could really take root; that opportunity is over and there's no real capitalization of it," Steinberg stated.
He went on to add, "They had a great crescendo moment with Halo and it helped catapult them into a pretty strong position towards the back end of last year, but they were still within a stone's throw of where they were with the original Xbox.
"To me that speaks of a failure to broaden their reach beyond the core first person shooter player who was in their back pocket for Xbox," he added.
"The question for us is 'are they really going after the PS2 demographic? Are they stealing share from us?' And the answer is no."
Steinberg counts on the millions of PlayStation 2 fans in the world to turn the tables for PS3 in the next two to three years.
"That's the secret weapon, that's what goes unreported. It's this 41 million universe of PS2 owners that will be targeted very, very soon to upgrade to a PS3 Blu-ray machine," Steinberg told Next-Gen.
Well they wont be turning this PS2 fan until they reduce the price of the PS3 and bring out some decent must have games
Funny how only now theyre admitting how well M$ was doing previously.
Of course the M$ are stealing PS fans, are they stupid? PS2 did well because of the likes of GTA, DMC, FF, MGS, Tekken, GT, God Of War, to mention a few, 1/3rd of those titles are available on the xbox 360( and i feel that Lost Odyssey is a good FF replacement ) and of course the 360 has its own exclusives also
I think the PS3 is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none sort of machine. It can do the lot, but for someone who is looking specifically for... RTS's, they will go for PC. someone looking specifically for sports will go for wii.
It's all fine and good saying this. But seriously Sony, you cant comment until you sort out the release dates on your titles to provide this wealth of titles you are talking about!
There have been too many delays on titles, and people are loosing interest in the PS3 system.I suppose its a good job you installed a Blu-ray drive in the console, least we can get a regular flow of titles to watch!
Unlike the games!
Sort your act out Sony, then you can put MS down. But please concentrate on games first before the mud slinging match!
Nobody can undermine the success of the 360, especially in 2007. However, I do feel there is a smidgeon of truth in what this guy is saying. The massive successes for 360 have all been fps. Halo3, COD4, Gears of War, Bioshock (a posh fps) amongst others. Maybe it is just the climate we are in?
Putting aside any fanboyism, Sony have, especially in the past, catered for more types of gamers.
At least Microsoft are now making the effort to diversify, but what they should do is throw some money into finding the Halo equivalent of a more casual game. And let us not go on about Viva bloody Pinata' or that horrible quiz game. I'm talking about a quality release that makes people get together at parties, like Singstar.
Oh, and a new Jet Set Radio may pique my personal interest...
My PS3 turned up this morning. Very nice. But I tried playing an upscaled DVD and the fan kicked in - as loud, or louder, than my 360. WTF? It's in a unit but with plenty of air round it in a not very hot room.
The 360 is a niche market for FPS fans its as simple as that, I have had a 360 since day one and the only decent games that come out for it are FPS games which I despise so I sold my 360 a month ago and am going for a PS3 instead as its got more staying power and it has a cheap blu ray built in, its better made and Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 13.
I think the PS3 is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none sort of machine. It can do the lot, but for someone who is looking specifically for... RTS's, they will go for PC. someone looking specifically for sports will go for wii.
they don't really need to ''capture'' anyone though. aslong as, eventually, they sell a ps3 to the 100million who bought a ps and ps2 they'll be laughing.
well i for one didn't own the original xbox but i did own a ps2. i now have a 360 (and a Wii) and can't see a compelling reason right now to go out and buy a PS3, well not unless i wanted a cheap bluray player. it seems to me that more and more titles are going multi-platform and thus it will only be exclusives which differentiate each machine, an ever decreasing number of exclusives. sony will end up selling more ps3's than microsoft will 360's due to their previous success but it won't be the landslide victory they had in the past.
My PS3 turned up this morning. Very nice. But I tried playing an upscaled DVD and the fan kicked in - as loud, or louder, than my 360. WTF? It's in a unit but with plenty of air round it in a not very hot room.
So much for silent running.
louder than a 360? i got mine last week and noticed that it still had a slight noise but no where near as loud as my old 360.
Whereas the ps3 has yet to capture anyone at the moment., If the ps3 had been released by a new company and not sony it would be dead by now. This gen the xbox 360 has not only offered the best range of games but has also expanded gaming a lot more than sony have, yet all sony do is bitch about them being the best.
Strange, other than Cod4 and Bioshock my favourite games on 360 aren't 1st person shooters...
Crackdown Dead Rising Oblivion Gears of War
Also I don't see any big 1st person shooter exclusives coming out for 360 this year. All the big exclusives this year fall into completly different genre's.
When PS3 starts bringing the quality and the variety, this guy has the right to talk s**t. Right now it's just been one average games after another.
This is the sort of rubbish that makes me not want to buy a ps3, Sony talk as though people dont know the truth. that was typical marketing crap containing little or no fact.
he says that games will now look better if they are developed on a ps3 first. all this will do is allow the ps3 versions to catch up with the 360 versions. not a bad thing, but the way he worded it is ridiculous.
i hate this man and i dont even know him, how sad is that!?
I think there is some truth in this; The 360 has catered largely to the FPS crowd with a wealth of great shooters, but there are other good titles too, y'know. Actually, the 360 seems to have a bunch of good RPGs around right now- Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey in particular are some of the finest RPG's I've played to date, and whilst MS might be struggling to attract more to the machine the fact remains that the selection of RPGs available over here is still way beyond what the PS3 offers.
I also find it quite funny that Sony are targeting their PS2 users to upgrade to a PS3, but have cut backwards compatibility out of their new machine. Thats not really supporting your old community, now is it? I know the 360's BC is rather hit-and-miss, but at least its there in every machine you buy...
The war is between Sony and Microsoft, and therefore, it has f**k all to do with me so i really could not be less interested in all the hot air these fools spout.
My PS3 turned up this morning. Very nice. But I tried playing an upscaled DVD and the fan kicked in - as loud, or louder, than my 360. WTF? It's in a unit but with plenty of air round it in a not very hot room.
I hate this stupid argument '360 is only for FPS fans' bulls**t. I take it the pS3 is better? Hmm, wheres the PS3's Katamari, Lost Oddysee, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, Wartech, Scene it, Viva Pinata, Kameo, Dead Rising, Crackdown... i think ive proved my point.
Face it Sony - your current releases are a lot more stale than the 360's. Come back to us in a year with this argument when you've go the games of this diversity that can compete
Steinberg counts on the millions of PlayStation 2 fans in the world to turn the tables for PS3 in the next two to three years.
This chap is going to be very disappointed if he expects that the PS3 will just inherit the gamers who bought the PS2. The PS and PS2 were so sucessful because they really opened the market up to casual gamers, the PS3 so far has gone exactly the opposite way by providing only for the more dedicated gamers, if anything the PS2 'crowd' will be more likely to get a 360 or Wii for the 'manly shooters' of the 360 and the party/user friedly games (and Nintendo exclusives) of the Wii.
I know its still fairly early on this gen but Sony have a lot to prove right now, there's still no reason as far as I can see for me to get a PS3, certainly not for that amount of money, though Final Fantasy 13 might start to erode my defenses.
I have to admit the 360 is more of a hardcore audience which is what Sony was trying to say... the only problem is its the same for PS3 so they just said FPS as Microsoft's biggest game is Halo 3 (in terms of sales).
Microsoft wanted to hit all aspects of the industry but they just can't with the Wii. The 360 is a great hardcore gamer/online gamer/media nut looking for great looking and playing games with the largest amount of choice. The PS3 is a great power house with erm Gran Turismo? and MGS (for how long?). The PS3 is going to look more at socializing and will sell to its previous buyers (chav kids who don't know much about games but like well know names and chatting up dirty birds and this is where Home will kick in.
I think Microsoft needs to change its plans and keep its own market open they have basically created a PC gamer style audience for consoles where as Wii has kiddies and new comers and PS3 has the chatty OMG sequel biggest bestest game evaaa.
The 360 also has people like that but at least they confirm their disappointment with games. But this is only a rough idea as not everyone who owns a 360 is hardcore etc but its the rough idea
Each console has its own audience and all act different but what Sony saying is wrong but they need to take a jab sometime don't they?
360 is not a FPS only console like some people would like you to believe. That matter has only come arise due to FPS being THE MOST POPULAR GENRE right now, and it just so happens 360 has capatalized on that with great games like Halo 3, Bioshock etc... Sony can hardly talk. Their two games they are billing as their killer apps for 2008 are both FPS games, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2, where as MS have titles like Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Banjo 3, Ninja Gaiden 2 etc...
Rather than Sony spending their efforts bad mouthing competition, how about they focus on their own console and actually get me playing the thing. MGS4 will be the first time I've used my PS3 in nearly 5 months for gaming...
My PS3 turned up this morning. Very nice. But I tried playing an upscaled DVD and the fan kicked in - as loud, or louder, than my 360. WTF? It's in a unit but with plenty of air round it in a not very hot room.
So much for silent running.
I suspect you have a faughty unit then.
Not a good start. I have my ps3 since last year, and can barely hear it. Which cant be said for my 360 when i had it lol. It was like having a 2nd center speaker, that was defective. Still i do miss my 360, mainly the Live elements of it.
Looks as though Sony have trained up another goon to slag off the competition. He may very well have a point that they failed to capture as wide a demographic as they could have, but I think he's forgetting that the millions of people MS failed to steal from the PS brand have more than likely moved to the Wii.
The sad fact is that PS3 doesn't really serve any one purpose any better than other less expensive or more established consoles.
I also think that Sony are forgetting just how fickle consumers are. The PS3 may not be another Saturn, but no console manufacturer has kept the lead in this market for more than a couple of consoles.
I was a PS2 owner last gen, and on my 360 I currently have
Forza, PGR and Burnout Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey and Oblivion Devil May Cry, Assassins Creed Gears Of War, GRAW2 Call Of Duty, R6V FIFA08, Madden 07 Command And Conquer 3
I would a that is pretty diverse! a couple of games from every genre I enjoy. I'll get a PS3 when they have some must haves I can't get on my 360.
He may have a point, but have Sony really reached beyond their core fan-base either - I don't think so. There's plenty of people out there who had a PS2 and who love the PlayStation brand that went straight out and bought a PS3. Has PS3 really offered anything unique and exciting yet - no.
Oh, unless you count blu-ray movies, like the PS2 did with DVDs. The only people to court a new audience are Nintendo with the Wii, but they won't sell many games per console with the Wii so I reckon there'll be a Wii 2 sooner rather than later.
Personally, I love FPS, so I couldn't give a cr*p about the lack of evolution in either the 360 or the PS3!
If sony was so concerned about getting ps2 players to upgarde to a ps3 you would have thought they would have kept the backwards compatabilty from there 60gig ps3 models and not yet again screw over the very pepole there trying to get onboard. As for scott steinberg he seem's to know so much about games he should apply for a job at the daily mail or the bbc AKA he knows ???? all.

yep there's far too many fps's on the 360 and most of them substandard. you can't look at the shelf in any game shop without seeing at least 3 shooters for any 1 other game. sure there's a few good racers like pgr or forza but wheres the adventure games. i can't think of an xbox exclusive similar to uncharted
It looks like Sony dont know what they are talking about on this. 1 they are pinning there hopes on ps2 owners "upgrading" 2. they are stating its these ps2 owners that are not attracted to xbox360 because of its "hardcore" image. Well for one a lot of ps2 owners have already purchased a new console, that's right the nintendo wii, This it seems sony have chosen to completely disregard. A lot of the singstar/buzz brigade who previously only bought such titles are now finding a whole new way of social playing. So Sony can't rely on these customers like they seem to be doing.
It just me but are Sony riding all thier hopes on the Kindgom Hearts, God of War, Final Fantasy, Rachet and MGS soild IPs from the PS2 to lure buyers into getting a PS3?
Seeing as the likes of DMC, Resi Evil and a few other PS2 IPs have found new homes on other formats, 'Final Fantasy' isn't as strong as it used to be with the numerical offerings (seeing as Mystwalker IS 'Squaresoft' and they have a home on the 360) and it's spinoff titles have found semi-profitable homes with Nintendo, things like God of War may be comming to a close on it's third installment and theres still a huge possibility that those IPs could end up on PC in the end..
That above plan kinda fell through. So they're kinda want to discredit other formats to proclaim that the PS3 is the only console good enough to buy?
Well TBH it will sell in the format of a 'cheap bluray player' if someone doesn't make one cheaper, but as it stands the PS3 wont sell on the console standings, theres limited good offerings plus it's too expencive compeared to the other two.
well i for one didn't own the original xbox but i did own a ps2. i now have a 360 (and a Wii) and can't see a compelling reason right now to go out and buy a PS3, well not unless i wanted a cheap bluray player. it seems to me that more and more titles are going multi-platform and thus it will only be exclusives which differentiate each machine, an ever decreasing number of exclusives. sony will end up selling more ps3's than microsoft will 360's due to their previous success but it won't be the landslide victory they had in the past.
Thank God, I was beginning to think I was the only one!
Well at least they didn't take the easy jab and go for the failure rate.
Sorry Sony but MS haven't failed in my book. Sure it has a wealth of FPS, but they're also the best console shooters ever released; Halo 3 and COD4 have set such a benchmark that it will be hard to compete against, this should lead to developers broadening their genres.
This year the titles I'm most looking forward to are, Fable 2, Resident Evil 5, StreetFighter 4, GTA4, Gears Of War 2, Fall Out 3, Ninja Gaiden 2, Halo Wars and Banjo 3, not one of them is a FPS. The catalogue is diversifying whilst Sony still try and work on the 'halo killer.'
I chose my console on the games and controller, which the xbox wins. I hate Gran Turismo, behind the flash graphics it is incredibly antiquated, and MGS is just a load of preachy bollox.
It's time Sony put their money where their mouth is. PS3 is bound to win this gen, but MS aren't going anywhere, it's going to get closer with each console iteration.
I basically posted the same thing in the 360 price drop news yesterday, the fact 360 has not surpassed xbox 1 sales makes this dudes statement valid. This means 360 hasn't done anymore to sony than they did in the last gen, and the fact the next box is already getting mentioned suggests there not banking on 360 blowing xbox 1 lifetime sales away.
but for his statement to be completely valid ps3 has to push 60 million units in the next 3 years. at that time I expect next box to be out or close to launch. but I won't get it first day until it proves as reliable as my wii & ps3.
My PS3 turned up this morning. Very nice. But I tried playing an upscaled DVD and the fan kicked in - as loud, or louder, than my 360. WTF? It's in a unit but with plenty of air round it in a not very hot room.

You might want to take it back then as one of the first things I noticed when I bought my PS3 was how much quiter it was than my 360. Blu-Ray Disc or up scaled.
i like the way the ps3 is not a games machine but a blu ray machine
I'm glad someone else noticed this. The very fact that he called it the PS3 Blu-ray machine tells you exactly where their interests lie. He's the marketing guy for crying out loud. That is the most troubling statement of the article in my opinion; he doesn't call it a game machine.
Another question for you Sony. Why haven't the "universe" of PS2 owners already bought a PS3, huh? You haven't offered us anything, and on top of it you insult our intelligence by assuming we'll just loyally stick to your console instead of someone else's.
the 360 is still going to be ahead the only thing 360 has to do is keep lowering the price to stay ahead and keep releasing exclusives. gears 2 is going to make the 360 number 1 this holiday season.
this thread is so boring. i have to say though i agree with everything this man says. the ps3 is so far superior to the 360 in all accounts. the ps3 will rule over the 360 and will be the winner if we really need to be counting how many consols sell overall. does it really matter though. the answer is no, as both sony and microsoft are the winners as they are the ones with our money
My PS3 turned up this morning. Very nice. But I tried playing an upscaled DVD and the fan kicked in - as loud, or louder, than my 360. WTF? It's in a unit but with plenty of air round it in a not very hot room.

Your PS3 is faulty. Get it replaced.
As for people STILL saying "The PS3 has no good games". I have some advise, come back from 2007, it's old an no longer true. There are plenty of great games worth playing on the PS3. Sure, a lot of them are multi-platform. But the ones that I am enjoying the most are not; Unreal Tournament 3 (Love the mods), Uncharted, GT5 Prologue, Heavenly Sword and Motorstom, to name a few.
This article pinpoints why I upgraded to a PS3 from a 360 (Appart from getting RROD twice). I just got sick of gung-ho American shooters. Don't get me wrong I like FPS's (UT3, COD4). But the 360's library feels like it's 80% FPS's!
Seems like the old Sony arrogance is back then. Basically what they're saying is they're relying on the installed PS2 user base to upgrade to PS3.
I don't doubt for a second that there are brain-dead drones out there who will go from the PS2 to the PS3 simply because it's a PS3, but there will also be a massive amount of 'loyal' PS2 owners who will consider jumping to the MS console.
Sony need to realise that brand loyalty is not something they can rely on for the PS3. They should know this better than anyone as they themselves were nearly single-handedly responsible for taking Sega out of the console market.
And look what a loyal following Sega had not so many years ago......
I don't fully agree with Sony on this one but the PS3 has a better line up this year than the 360 and looking at the sales it is only a matter of time before the PS3 takes over the 360 in sales. People who are saying the PS3 lacks games are very deluded and I feel they have some crazy vendetta against Sony. I have owned 4 360s and all have failed with hardware faults so I gave up on Microsoft but I can not fault the games on the 360. Anybody who thinks the PS3 has no good games are just a sad fanboy.
Regarding us PS2 heads jumping ship to xbox360 or Wii, lets not forget those of us who just upgraded our PC either simply due to the current cost of these consoles and the games( and i mean 7hours to finish a game and it goes back on the shelf ). With all the confusion over which console would win etc etc and lack of any decent games coming out on the PS3 and the PC getting most of the 360's exclusive titles i opted just to upgrade my machine as i need it anyway.
At least i can play my PS2 games on my PC( since my PS2 died at crimbo ) and dont have to care about the mess $ony did with the BC
Typical Sony bulls**t. I know loads of people with 360's who have a ride range of games from stealth stuff like Tenchu and Splinter Cell to racing games like Forza, Pgr and Test Drive and Rpgs like Oblivion. I myself have a wide range of games for my 360 and they are not all shooters.
Now instead of moaning, do something about it and pull your finger out Sony. Make some decent, exclusive games so we all want to buy a Ps3.
PS3 only has a Blu-Ray player so Hideo Kojima can release his interactive movie, no other game even makes use of the extra capacity, & what's a Playstation without MGS?
P.S. My dear Scotty, please can you tell me which of these 'exclusive' 360 games are FPS's, Gears of War, Forza MotorSport 2, Mass Effect, Project Gotham Racing 4, Dead Rising, Crackdown? Another Sony numb nut speaks the truth.
It is ironic that the PS3 is currently extremely heavy on the shooter genre, but that is of little relevance to me. All this corporate willy waving is getting a bit silly, wouldn't you agree? Stop talking, start acting - and that goes for all three console manufacturers.
I would disagree that FPS are all the 360 has. FPS is actually a genre I'm not too hot on, yet I own a 360. Odd right? It without a doubt has an awful lot of shooters (including some very high quality shooters - you HAVE to play Bioshock, but that is in many ways an atypical FPS), but it arguably has the most complete library of any current-gen console (excluding the PS2). I love RPGS, and in that regard, the Xbox caters for me. The console has a stellar 2008, and I am really looking forward to many of its upcoming games.
I don't care for any of the silly fanboy arguments. I like video games in general and am not blindly tied to any console like a zealot. The PS3 has some great games coming out, too...
Well they wont be turning this PS2 fan until they reduce the price of the PS3 and bring out some decent must have games

They knocked Ł125 off the price ya tight bastard! what else do you want?A BJ aswell!
Sorry, but this is Sony just talking out of their backsides. If Microsoft went after the FPS market, what market are Sony playing for? - where's their diversity? - seems to me that it's pretty much the same range of genres on both consoles.
I am not an FPS fan - never have been, but I chose the 360 over the PS3 due the sheer range of games available at the time, I own 1 FPS (BioShock) and that's it.
Either way, this is just turning into a farce - I am so bored of hearing about all this Sony vs. Microsoft rubbish.....if they want to have a war, can they not just go and do it in private?
My PS3 turned up this morning. Very nice. But I tried playing an upscaled DVD and the fan kicked in - as loud, or louder, than my 360. WTF? It's in a unit but with plenty of air round it in a not very hot room.

The real kick in the teeth to the PS3's appeal for me is that the games are usually more expensive than their 360 counterparts (presumably because of the blu-ray format, or to give the impression that they're better than the 360 version). Also, considering the major hits on the PS are franchises that date back over a decade old (GT, MGS etc) I find it highly amusing that any PS owner should criticise the choice of games on another system.
But of course! Most games are FPS on 360. I'll just go fire up Beautiful Katamari on my 360 tonight whilst you play UT3... on PS3.
Well they wont be turning this PS2 fan until they reduce the price of the PS3 and bring out some decent must have games

Ah yeah, but i just ment that theres 0 interest for me at the moment to spend 400 quid on, being honest with you, if i went out tomorrow to buy one the only game i would get would be DMC3, and i can save myself 400+euro by just getting the PC version in 3 weeks. Of course id get GTA4 when its out too, but thats gonna be out in November on the PC, and ive got a load of games to tide me over, i used to be a big MGS fan, but meh, got fed up with the series and honestly dont see anything amazing in the previews so far
They knocked 125 off the price ya tight bastard! what else do you want?A BJ aswell!
lmao, is that why sales of PS3's have gone up, free BJ at the counter by some orange high maintainence chick. lol
They did know 125 off it, but seriously as i said above, there is absolutely no reason for me to get one at the moment, honestly it just doesnt have enough exclusive AAA titles, that might change for me when the new FF games come out, but i can easily wait another 6 months or a year before i would get one and by that stage there might be some more decent games out for it and it will have dropped in price again Im even disappointed with GT5 with no car damage, although i think id love the online races but we'll see
Did you know that the PS3 can actually guess what game you want to play before you even turn it on?
Also did you know that the 360 wants you to play different games all the time and the RRoD is actually just the xbox getting mad at you for playing the same game too much?
People who are saying the PS3 lacks games are very deluded and I feel they have some crazy vendetta against Sony.Anybody who thinks the PS3 has no good games are just a sad fanboy.
The people that say PS3 has no good games are just like me, most likley owning a 360 and PS3, and buy all the multi-format games for 360 as they are always the better version. With that in mind, you are left with only the exclusives, which are rather poor with the exception of Uncharted and Rachet and Clank. Even looking forward to this year, PS3 still doesn't have that many stand out exclusives, with the exception of MGS4 and LBP. You just need to look for their fall 'killer apps', which consist of Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 to sum up PS3 at the moment; 'Not quite there yet...'
Oh f*ck off. If you can't sell your own machine on the strengths it has, stop trying to shoot holes in someone else's.
Either promote what your machine can do or shut up.
Agreed right here. Perhaps Sony should work on their p**s-poor library of titles before they even consider knocking the stellar library (which isn't all FPS, thank you...) that the 360 has.
I mean, for ****'s sake, when the XBox Live Arcade selection of games is better than what PS3 has for retail, then you really know your system is in the proverbial crapper.
Did you know that the PS3 can actually guess what game you want to play before you even turn it on?
Also did you know that the 360 wants you to play different games all the time and the RRoD is actually just the xbox getting mad at you for playing the same game too much?
Did you know that a Wii will eat cheese if you leave a slice next to it overnight?
Did you know that the PS3 can actually guess what game you want to play before you even turn it on?
Also did you know that the 360 wants you to play different games all the time and the RRoD is actually just the xbox getting mad at you for playing the same game too much?
Did you know that a Wii will eat cheese if you leave a slice next to it overnight?
lmao@quoting yourself
Usually if i need any work done, i leave out cheese for the fairies and they'll have done all the work when i check in the morning, its my own private fairy sweat shop
They knocked 125 off the price ya tight bastard! what else do you want?A BJ aswell!
lmao, is that why sales of PS3's have gone up, free BJ at the counter by some orange high maintainence chick. lol
Whoa, I might get one for that too... Would I get my money back if I wasn't completely satisfied? I can see it now... "Sharon, wipe your chin, you have another customer to 'serve'"...
Actually, when you put it like that, it is kinda dumb that they choose to attack Microsoft on that front.....maybe Sony should get back to the ol' RROD argument - it holds more water!
FPS released on 360 since launch 23 with 11 exclusives (Gun, Call of Duty 2, Quake 4, Farcry Instincts, Battlefield 2, Call of Juarez, America's Army, Shadowrun, Perfect Dark Zero, Bioshock and Halo 3)
FPS released on PS3 since launch 17 with 3 exlusives (Reistance, Time Crisis 4, UT3)
Now remember a couple of things: 1) Gun, CoD2, Quake4, Farcry, Battlefield and Call of Juarez would have all be released on PS3 if it had already out on the market long enough 2) The 360 has been out for a whole year longer.
Lets look at the stats since Nov 2006 when the PS3 was launched:
FPS released on 360 since Nov 2006: 19 with 5 exclusives (Shadowrun, Call of Juarez, Halo 3, Bioshock & America's Army)
FPS released on PS3 since Nov 2006 17 with 3 exclusives (Resistance, Time Crisis 4 & UT3)
It just goes to show the both consoles released nearly the same amount of FPS since Nov 2006. Out of the 360 exclusives released since Nov06, one was Game of the year (Bioshock)and one is the fastest selling video ever(Halo3)
Anyway I just thought I would add my two pence and by the way, I have a PS3 and a 360 both bought since launch and I have never had a 3red lights (touches wood)
Oh NO!! 360 only sold fps games! someone quick, run and tell the developers of Mass Effect, DMC4, Rockband, GH, Assasins Creed, Saints Row, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Oblivion, Forza, Crackdown, DOA4, Marvel UA, Fight Night3, etc etc. Tell them ALL that Sony says they haven't really sold a million games and that 360 owners accidentally bought them on their way to pick up an FPS. And to the guy about to respond saying that some of those games are on PS3, let 'em know that they haven't sold a million on there.
Also, don't mention to Sony that the only game on their console worth mentioning is an FPS that is one of only three.. million selling titles on PS3, and don't be a douche and mention that if you add their three million selling titles together that they barely have more units sold than Gears of War alone.
Also, don't tell 'em that the top played games on PS3 are all shooter's (Resistance, COD4, UT3, Uncharted, Warhawk, Rainbow 6...).

I think that post basically closes this issue once and for all....these facts speak for themselves.
Also, can you really count Gun and Call of Juarez FPS's? - I've never actually played CoJ, but I'd certainly say that Gun was more of a 3rd person action/adventure (it's only when you go into 'quickdraw' mode that it goes into first-person).

Call of Juarez definitely is. It was one of the first demos I downloaded when I got my 360 on line. And it's pretty s**t... But defo an FPS
Also, don't tell 'em that the top played games on PS3 are all shooter's (Resistance, COD4, UT3, Uncharted, Warhawk, Rainbow 6...).
Not sure Uncharted can be considered a shooter. Unless you consider Tomb Raider a shooter...
May i ask how many 360 owners out there actally have most of their games as FPS titles? Or is everyone under the assumtion that all 360 owners hug Halo 3 at night? Sorry but I Hug Blue Dragon at night most of my FPS titles (two of them) I have for PC my Wii and 360 cover the platform RPG side of things.
Sorry but my orignal statment stands unless the PS3 can cover more of what I had in the terms of Platform and RPG qualitiy the PS2 had, the 360 and Wii has everything the PS2 used to have and then some, it's lost most of it's excluivness to the other formats.
Plus it doesn't help them if the PS2 still cucks out games if they want us to 'upgrade', it's like asking XP users to use Vista when software covers both OSes and that user doesn't need a 64-bit system yet, the PS3 is too far ahead of the market to be 'required' yet, until we 'require' bluray and HD TVs it's a lucsary item
funny how my ps3 is used for games, blu ray is the added bonus RESISTANCE FALL OF MAN, COD4, RATCHET AND CLANK, RAINBOW SIX VEGAS, FIFA 08, BURNOUT PARADISE, DMC4, ASSASINS CREED, NINGA GAIDEN SIGMA, UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3, and the best game by far on any console UNCHARTED: DRAKES FORTUNE an you 360 fanboys say the ps3 has no games and is used mainly as a blu ray player? dont make me laugh cough! cough! i have all those games and would pick out uncharted as the pick of the bunch as the game is unbelievably good!
Over here please, it's interesting to see this p**sing contest between the 'haves' and 'have nots', I'll inject some logical sence now and then but'll get ignored over fanboiisum, guns don't start wars fanbois do
Call of Juarez is NOT s**te. Well, dunno about the 360 version, but it was a great game on PC.
What can I say, not my bag. Then again, now I think back to it, it wasn't that bad. For lesser respected FPS games though, I'd plum for Condemned every time. It's rocking, and s**t scary too.
As for what games a fellow 36o owner owns, I have 3 FPSs, Halo 3, CoD4 and Condemned. Out of 11 games. *shrug* Make of that what you will.
Well, if you only played the demo, you missed out on a great game. As I recall, it's a bit pants at the start, but it quickly gets awesome. I recommend Call of Juarez to anyone! Condemned is great too. Melee combat ft proverbial w.

I only have 1 - BioShock. I've got 13 360 games and I'd say they cover a fair few genres...
I think that post basically closes this issue once and for all....these facts speak for themselves.

Silly me, I forgot Gun was 3rd person. Also I did not include any PSN/Xbox Arcade titles like Doom on Arcade.
I think the huge sales of COD4 and Halo3 proves that there is a big market for console FPS.
More interesting stats this time from VGCHARTZ.COM (worldwide figures)
How many million selling FPS in the TEN list:
360 - Halo 3 & COD4 with 7.3million & 5.03million PS3 - COD4 & Resistance with 2.5m & 2.4m
How many million sellers on each console
360 - 34 titles HALO3 highest, Dead or Alive 4 lowest with 1.01m PS3 - 8 titles with Motorstorm highest with 2.8 and Need 4 Speed Prostreet lowest with 1.06m
Finally, How much as Guitar Hero 3 sold on each console?
PS2 - 3.48m 360 - 2.43m Wii - 1.88m PS3 - 0.92m
The stats seem to prove that even when games are released on multiple platforms most people prefer to buy the game on 360 or Wii, not PS3. The PS3 is just not attracting gamers to it nor does it have any games that are system sellers. Even great exclusive titles like Ratchet and Clank & Uncharted have yet to sell more than a million each. It will be interesting to see what happens when GTA4 arrives on both consoles. Will the arrival of MGS4 shift alot of PS3s? Sony really hope it does.
I think that both Sony and M$ are p**sed that nintendo is ahead (God knows why it even is) so are just getting petty. Appealing to USA, the 360 does have a lot of FPS, tohugh to be honest i think that Microsoft should shut up with their comments about Sony (especially regarding GTA4) because 360 hasn't won yet and PS3 is gaining some fire-power, and Sony should shut up with comments like this because they're not ahead yet. Get ahead and you have your bragging rights, focus on that, not winning fans over with petty arguments which just bait fanboys.
I personally love FPS's (though hate Half-Life, only Portal is good), i am a new fan to CoD4, UT3 and so many other ones since i got my first taste of online FPS's. But i think a few Adventures and Platformers would be a nice change, along with some damn point n' clicks for the next Gen consoles (especially the Wii) whivh don't revolve around a flotating monkey named Wiki....
As for GTA4 i don't think it will sell consoles. People will just buy it on existing consoles they have. It won't shift much hardware, it's all about the software. Multi-format games aren't a big deal. It's the exclusives like Gears of War (360), Halo (360), God of War, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid (PS3) etc that will sell hardware.
My god you console devs really need to grow up (not just Sony) shut the hell up all of you and just concentrate on the games. That at the end of the day is what really makes a console in my opinion, not this my penis is bigger than yours crap.
One thing i would like to add. The second hand market. Uncharted may be great but hoe many ppl do you think held out and bought it second hand. Maybe thats why its sells arnt so great or yet to reach a million. Game and Gamestatiom both promote their preowned software more than brand new because they make more profit.
HA! Well we will see what they say when Xbox 360s GTA4 with exclusive content and better framerates arrive
Oh and then there is Devil May Cry, PES, Beautiful Katamari (is the spelt right?), and VF5 nicked from PS3 as well.
R* Already siad the content was insignificant DMC and PES were both released at the same time on both formats as far as I Know, The only difference being ps3 has faster DMC Load times VF5 Has been out on PS3 Since launch, Many moths before 360 saw it.
In relation to the topic, Yes the 360 is a Console for Retarded teenagers who play FPS and 3PS All their biggest games have been shooting games Ps3 has had a range of genres.
Face it, 360 owners are just snooker cues following the crowd, Who didn't buy the PS3 due to Ridiculous reasons like the price, or "Lack of games" Which is frankly laughable Come on, we've had UT3 For months before, Launch games, now at bargain prices, that are still great like resistance and Motorstorm etc. Fun PSN Games like Super Stardust HD and GT HD Concept, Online ace WarhawK, Uncharted is amazing too Let's face it theres loads of choice and basically no reason for not owning a PS3 right now.
Unless your Under 10, or a retard, who doesn't want online gaming. Then Buy the Wii. Or If you only want to play repetitive "Samey" Shooting games with Lag filled onlin that you have to pay for, And You're a snooker cue. Then buy the 360.
The stats seem to prove that even when games are released on multiple platforms most people prefer to buy the game on 360 or Wii, not PS3.
The stats prove what we already know: more 360s and Wiis have been sold, therefore there are fewer people to buy the PS3 versions of multi-format games.
this thread is so boring. i have to say though i agree with everything this man says. the ps3 is so far superior to the 360 in all accounts. the ps3 will rule over the 360 and will be the winner if we really need to be counting how many consols sell overall. does it really matter though. the answer is no, as both sony and microsoft are the winners as they are the ones with our money
i agree with you that sony will sell more ps3's than the 360, but what i will put my money down on is that the 360 will sell a lot more games as people buy the 360 specifically for gaming whereas alot of ps3's are bought as a cheap blu-ray player (and im not saying the ps3 is a bad games machine before fanboys start yelling at me as i have a ps3 and play on it regularly). The attach rate of games per console is and always will be much higher on the 360. i also agree with your last statement as well lol, sony and microsoft are the ones laughing at the hardcore fanboys whilst rubbing their hands together....
I have an Xbox 360. I am not a teenager. I reckon I'm not retarded since I have a degree. I own 10 games, three of which are FPS or "3PS" games. I was the first of all my gamer mates to buy a 360, I guess I am the crowd. In essence, f**k you.
I would not expect anybody with any acceptable level of intelligence to say something like what you have just said. I can only deduce that you are indeed a young teenager of about 14 years who has his balls dropping as the major life experience to look forward to.
Thats true about uncharted, I guess I probably shouldn't have mentioned it.
Either way, I think the only area where Sony is doing better than 360 is in the platformers, and only because of Rachet & Clank, which is a brilliant series. 360 rules every other area... best sports releases (60 fps ftw), BEST selection of RPGs, Best FPS games, then we've got XBLA games that are sweet as well as XNA games coming up in the fall (Dead Samurai ftw), RTS, Action games... wtf.. Really, the only things I see as high points for the system are Blu Ray, MGS, Rachet and Clank, and Final Fantasy. But besides R&C, I think 360 still has the better line-up on every other aspect and has a better alternatives for even MGS and FF, with Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, Lost Oddyssey, Too Human, Alan Wake, SplinterCell, Eternal Sonata, KUF series etc etc.
Maybe Sony has stuff coming out that I don't know about, but from what I can easily see, they don't have anything coming out that I think would make me want to get the console... I originally intended on getting it for DMC, but that came out on 360. Before they attack other consoles for doing well (weird?), maybe they should have something in their catalouge that is out all that could make someone want the console. I mean, seriously, the only upper hand they're mentioning is BluRay... hell, he even said in the article that he was waiting for the 40+million (I thought it was 100mill?), PS2 owners to upgrade to the PS3 Bluray.
Lets see some games. eh'?
I absolutely agree with headspin on consoles sales though.
Face it, 360 owners are just snooker cues following the crowd, Who didn't buy the PS3 due to Ridiculous reasons like the price, or "Lack of games" Which is frankly laughable
i own a 360, does that make me a snooker cue?? but i also own a ps3, so what happens with your logic now about me, am i snooker cue cos i own a 360 or am i immune from your philosophy because i own a ps3 also, or should i recieve 40 lashes for daring to buy a games console because i like playing games on it irrelevant of the brand??? also, why do all fanboys presume everyone only has one make of consoles in their house????

You justt described the PS crowd there idiot. Why did you buy a PS3 - because it's called a 'Playstation' by any chance?
Also 5 pages & 105 comments WTF?! Seriously, get a grip people.

OH MY GOD!!! What a blind, ignorant fanboy you are. The 360 has a much more extensive range of games, across all genres, compared to the PS3. As so people has already said in this thread - Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, Forza 2, Pro Evo, Viva Pinata, Tomb Raider, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Assassain Creed, Ghost Recon, Dead Rising, Crackdown.............need I go on. Oh look - Not a FPS in sight!! And don't get me started on the huge amount of Xbox Arcade games available. Btw - I am not a retarded, teenage sheep, following the masses but a 35yrs hardcore gamer since Atari 2600, who loves games and I have bought every console right from launch, except the Wii because only has a small number of games that appeal to the hardcore gamer. Tekken._.PS3 - Your stupid comment just made you sound like the typical brainless American Teenage fanboy. At least try and sound intelligent.

If 'This Is Living' means waiting 20 mins for DMC4 to install knowing that's a 5 gig chunk of my 40 gig taken up... then I'd rather die.
Steady on chap, have you been on Seroxat??
I have a PS3 and this guy is talking crap. Microsoft have the right idea, bring out a console before your main contender, sort the problems out on the way and most importantly bring out the games the people want. I may go buy a 360 soon on the cheap just to catch up on all the great games. Though I do think the next Xbox will be advertised by 2011....
What's holding this generation of consoles back is -
1 - they cost too much
2 - a lot of people are happy to stick to the last gen
3 - all the exras, like HD/Blu-ray/online, puts people off, as you need a lot of money to take advantage of them all
4 - all the stupid "my one's better than your one" fanboys are confusing people, as they both look the same to most people
Also, the argument "PS3 is the most powerfull console, so it will win in the end" is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, just look back at all the format wars there have ever been, and in every case the most powerfull format has allways lost, SNES/Megadrive, Mac/PC, VHS/Betamax, etc, etc...
Too much pages in this thread. Could someone just fill me in with a quick summary?
Any bickering yet?
Supposedly someone called Steven is trying to take over the world by spraying hairspray into peoples eyes. Which is very painful & county's are falling under his rule left right & center because they dont want hairspray in their eyes.
No, they said it wasn't as significant as a new island. This does not mean it's insignificant at all.
DMC and PES were both released at the same time on both formats as far as I Know, The only difference being ps3 has faster DMC Load times
And a 5 gig, 20 minute install don't forget.
VF5 Has been out on PS3 Since launch, Many moths before 360 saw it.
So? Oblivion came out for the PS3 way after the 360 and PC counterpart - what's your point? Some games come out earlier on some formats, that's a fact of life.
In relation to the topic, Yes the 360 is a Console for Retarded teenagers who play FPS and 3PS
I'm 31, educated, and was playing Skate the other night. I believe that checks none of your boxes.
All their biggest games have been shooting games Ps3 has had a range of genres.
And, as has been pointed out numerous times, so does the 360.
Face it, 360 owners are just snooker cues following the crowd,
Unlike PS3 owners, none of which bought it because it had the 'Playstation' name
Who didn't buy the PS3 due to Ridiculous reasons like the price,
Man people have to live to a budget. It must be lovely to have a bottomless pit of cash, but Ł425 for a launch day console was too expensive for some people.
or "Lack of games" Which is frankly laughable
Yes, the lack of games is laughable. Maybe if they concentrated on it being a games machine first and foremost, and a Blu-Ray player after this, things may change.
Come on, we've had UT3 For months before, Launch games, now at bargain prices, that are still great like resistance and Motorstorm etc. Fun PSN Games like Super Stardust HD and GT HD Concept, Online ace WarhawK, Uncharted is amazing too Let's face it theres loads of choice and basically no reason for not owning a PS3 right now.
How about: I already own a 360 and see little reason to get a PS3 too I don't want one I can't afford it
Three pretty valid reasons, right of the top of my head
Unless your Under 10, or a retard, who doesn't want online gaming. Then Buy the Wii.
That's right, the Wii is solely played by retarded children. Have you actually PLAYED on one?
Or If you only want to play repetitive "Samey" Shooting games with Lag filled onlin that you have to pay for, And You're a snooker cue. Then buy the 360.
I've not had an issue with lag EVER whilst online with my 360. I'd check your net connection. As for samey shooting games, there's a world of difference between Halo 3 and CoD4 (the two most popular FPSs on the 360 currently) - have you played either?
You are another classic example of someone who snuck into the gene pool while the lifeguard wasn't looking.
Also, the argument "PS3 is the most powerfull console, so it will win in the end" is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, just look back at all the format wars there have ever been, and in every case the most powerfull format has allways lost, SNES/Megadrive, Amiga/Mac/PC, VHS/Betamax, etc, etc...
Although the 360 is making more of an effort than the original machine I don't think anyone can deny the 360 has a considerable volume of shooters which probably does little to dispel the image of it being "a hardcore gamers console full of shooters".
Yes, it does have some "other" games that give it that little more variety, but they're hardly in abundance. One of the reasons Viva Pinata was such a commercial failure was because most of the big money went into marketing Gears Of War - yes, a shooter.
I still think theres nothing on the 360 to match the likes of Mario Galaxy & Zelda, on the Wii and Uncharted & Ratchet & Clank on PS3. And Rare's offerings are often an underwhelming disappointment - who are they these days?
As a cheap Blu-Ray player the days of the PS3 are numbered http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5336755/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500011405.Sound%2Band%2Bvision%3EC%24cip%3D1500011433.DVD%2Band%2Bvideo%3EC%24cip%3D1500011443.Blu-ray%2BDVD%2Bplayers.htm
It should be bought purely for games now, I can see BR players hitting the sub Ł200 mark by this summer.
This gen has disappointed me overall to be honest. Yes it bought MG etc. A lot of what I'm seeing are sequels though with graphical improvements and a few new things here and there.
No matter what console you have 2008 will bring you games you want to play.
Oh f*ck off. If you can't sell your own machine on the strengths it has, stop trying to shoot holes in someone else's.
Either promote what your machine can do or shut up.
Right on, Sick of Sony suits talking s**te, like the 360 has an attach rate of between 6-9, PS3 has attach rate between 1.5 and 2, now thats some difference so how the hell can he stand up and say that Microsoft hasn't captialised. Halo 5.5 and growing COD 1.2 and growing(ps3 300k) Orange box 1 mill and gowing(ps3 250K. Also i have serious concern about Bluray, why the hell do you have to install games on the HD??, I reckon is due to crap transfer speeds on the drives.
Although the 360 is making more of an effort than the original machine I don't think anyone can deny the 360 has a considerable volume of shooters which probably does little to dispel the image of it being "a hardcore gamers console full of shooters".

What is it with this notion that the 360 has nothing but FPS games? What about all the other games? What percentage of 360 games are FPSs? in fact why not apply that to the PS3 as well, and find out which has the most
So games like C&C3, Halo Wars,World in Conflict, Mass Effect, Burnout Paradise and Lost Odyssey don't count? FPS only my bottom! But it is the type verbal crap I would expect from a Sony PR man. The fact of the matter is by the time Sony pull there fingers out and make the PS3 cheaper and bring out any half decent exclusive games....microsoft will be ready to release their next next gen console in 2010/11 and playstation will once again be on the back foot. I find this quite amusing as microsoft are doing to sony what they did to sega!
Sony needs to stop trying to sell ps3's because of the rep they have built with the ps2, that means nothing to next-gen gaming. They are too c**ky to try and correct their problems. 360 has more and better exclusives, hands down, is cheaper, and despite the high mortality rate is still backed up with a 3 year warranty. The 360 has so many more selling points, is just a much better bargain in the end for any type of gamer.
I've just read all these posts. I like your comments Chiseals, Vulcanraven, Ledichokas, Robera to name a few. I love yours W3881NS.
'The question for us is 'are they really going after the PS2 demographic? Are they stealing share from us?' And the answer is no."'
Well, from my limited experience, they seem to be. Unlike last generation, when only the word 'PS2' was guaranteed to elicit familiarity from anybody you spoke to, now the Wii, closely followed by the Xbox360, are in that same position.
'Steinberg counts on the millions of PlayStation 2 fans in the world to turn the tables for PS3 in the next two to three years.'
But the PS2 was a far more casual prospect for many people when it cost about half the price- and also was quite a lot smaller.
"That's the secret weapon, that's what goes unreported. It's this 41 million universe of PS2 owners that will be targeted very, very soon to upgrade to a PS3 Blu-ray machine," Steinberg told Next-Gen.
I didn't own a PS2 but all this talk of weapons and targets doesn't particularly make me want to be aimed at, shot and hoisted into Sony's 'keep-net'.
It seems odd that when the Xbox360 is supposed to be the console that has many of the violent, gritty games, there is no Xbox360 game that has such a stark, 'does what it says on the tin' title as 'Killzone' and no cover art that is stark as Resistance's cover showing a skull.
Microsoft's purchase of Rare shouldn't be underestimated in its attempts to broaden the Xbox's appeal. Rare are great at making fairytale type adventures with humour and Perfect Day is a beautiful, colourful, clean alternative to the more gritty, grimy alternatives on the market.
