PES tourney leader booted out for cheating

£50,000 cash prize snatched from tournament leader as he's caught doing naughty things
Konami has booted out the top player in its Play / Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 cash tournament for cheating.

The company didn't specify what the leading player did to earn the red card, but it did confirm that he's now officially out of the running for the £50,000 cash prize.

"Konami Digital Entertainment and Play.com will not tolerate cheating of any kind and reiterates its commitment that only the best players will be eligible to win the competition," the company said in a statement.

"The tournament is being overseen by Konami's respect PES Rankings team, which is charged with dealing with disputes and has ultimate authority. Those caught cheating will be banned from the competition and will face a ban of up to one year from PES Rankings."

The tournament is currently being played online, so its strongly assumed that lag exploits or similar are the reason for the wrist slap.

We could do with that PES rankings team to overlook our Mario Kart bouts.

Hmmmm - mind you, what wouldn't you do for Ł50k?

Also, how exactly would you exploit the lag? - not sure I understand that...

Lag switches... they were used on Socom on the PS2 and made the game unplayable!!
Fizzy_1983 on 7 Mar '08
Not sure how you can actually cheat at PES or FiFa for that matter, unless, when he had the ball, he paused then unpaused the game just before taking a shot.
It's happened to me (on FiFa) and it's bloody annoying. So maybe that's it.

Rob Mclean entered a result even though the match disconnected. His response:

"I have made many mistakes in my life but this was a silly one to make. It was not one i needed to make as i was 4-0 up and my opponent disconnected. I let down a lot of people including myself but i am completely adamant i never cheated as the game was already won. I was just trying to protect myself and i feel i have been made an example of here purely because of who i am. If i am any other player on PESRankings, i don't get a 12 month ban. I appreciate everything Konami and PESRankings have done for me in the past but this is nothing more than a huge disappointment for me and i do not feel i have been treated fairly."

Ah man.....imagine that, poor guy has just been screwed out of the very realistic chance of winning Ł50k - totally unfair if that is the reason!

Sad

This is the kind of cheating that crops up a lot when playing this game online, i beleive it's lag related somehow. It has put me off playing it online as the "lag" cheat is absolutely rife and hoovers up any fun the game may have offered.
wudragon on 7 Mar '08
how exactly does lagging work? I often saw people doing it on capture the flag in Resistance, and it put me off playing online for ages

You just slow your Internet connection down so as your appearence to other players is that your jumping around everywhere!
On the Ps2 all it took was for you to be playing an online game and be on your PC at the same time! That would cause enough lag to make the game unplayable!

Lag is the precise reason i have nothing to do with PES online, especially when you've got COD4 running smmoooth, it don't add up. That & the boring bar stewards that always pick Barcelona.

Yup. Online PES is impossible for me, it's far too laggy. Everything else works fine, of course.

Stupid game.

Exact same reason i dont touch online play.

Personally, i think its a joke who they can boot someone out for "Cheating" when its common knowledge that there is a Dive command in the game. FIFA have been approached to use video evidence to stop it in the real game so i dont see why it was needed in the video game. I mean would they boot someone out for diving & getting the benefit of it?

Doesn't take a Sherlock Holmes to realise that it isn't just people cheatin but actually a poor unfinished online code which was written by Konami. It's a shame really because the game is great offline, all they needed to do was to make the online mode just as smooth as the offline modes which shouldn't have been so hard to do within a year? If games like COD4 can successfully maintain smooth online play, i don't see why PES cannot deliver! All of the games i have played through xbox live seems to be smooth apart from PES which is a real shame. However I have to say it is quite entertaining at times if you're in the mood to play with completely unrealistic ball physics which involves the ball teleporting at times to random areas of the pitch. I just hope they sort out the online play in PES 2009, fingers crossed eh!!!!

I have expected patching for the online mode of this game for months. I don't mind a bit of lag from time to time. It is the nature of the beast. But it almost never runs smoothly. The last game ran fine. I know it is capable of running well in 2008 because It has happened once of twenty games.
There is an abundance of cheating going on. Also the amount of people who leave a game when they are about to lose is very frustrating.

PS: they also entirely removed the social aspect :/
More online features are needed. What are you up to Konami?

Agreed.

Konami have been screwing over xbox owners with the PES franchise from day one and some of the stuff they've done with the 360 releases (PES6 and 200Cool are frankly absurd.

PES6 was a great game watered down for 360 with a great online element (after the first few months of release) and yet no replay saves. Just think about that for a minute, no replay saves, WTF is all that about!?

PES2008 is awesome in single player but it's no exaggeration to say it's unplayable online. Sad as it may be most people who play PES are very passionate about it and are also very competitive. With such horrendous lag on 360 online I honestly don't know why they even bothered to include Xbox Live support! Even after 6 months there still hasn't been a patch released to improve things and as far as I'm aware, not a word from Konami.

It's ruined a great game for me so for the first time ever I'll be seriously considering my options come September '08 as to whether I bother with the new 'improved' PES.

Evil or Very MadEvil or Very MadEvil or Very MadEvil or Very Mad

Oh yeah, Rob McClean has my sympathies on his expulsion from the tournoi. He's ruled PES for years now and I can't honestly believe Konami would think he'd be willing to cheat!

Yeah I'm with you on the Barcelona thing, you get the same w****rs picking Brazil 'cos Ronaldinho is almost untouchable, whenever these tossers play me I tend to foul Ronaldinho as soon as possible intended to injure him and have him taken off!
