Certain Wii consoles are unable to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl correctly, according to a website recently published by Nintendo.
"Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity," reads the website.
"A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive."
Nintendo advises that you return your console to the company for specialised cleaning. There is no cost for the cleaning service and it won't affect your saved game data, although there is a chance your virtual console games will be deleted for some reason.
The repair offer is only available for United States residents, so if you imported an American console and are experiencing problems with the game, you might as well throw the system into the rubbish bin now, as we're sure Brawl won't be the only game to use a dual-layer disc.

Im sick of this generation of consoles! None of them work properly
Was gonna say exactly the same thing Nick, this gen have been terrible for build quality (360), glitchy beta-quality games (PS3) and random errors from even a previous gen console (Wii)
I'm thinking it may be a high priority for the next gen
My Wii has suffered quite a few topples from people getting over-excited while Gamecube pads are plugged in the top, and as a result it now clicks loudly when I insert a disc and in some cases can have trouble reading them. It's usually fixed by trying again a few times, making sure the disc is clean, maybe giving the Wii a few kicks for good measure... but anyway my point is (yes I have one! ) that I hope my already-dodgy Wii disc drive doesn't have trouble with Smash Bros, whenever it arrives. As my most anticipated Wii game, it would suck quite a generous quantity if my Wii couldn't actually run it.

This is not a problem limited to Wii. I have had similar problems with my PC, Playstation and PS2, oh and my cd and DVD players. If any dirt gets on a lens then it will cause read problems. The particular issue here is that it occurs on the dual layer disc as the second layer is more sensitive to these problems.

How if you're cleaning the lens?
I won't have this prob with this game since I'm not getting it. Does MK Wii come on a DL disc as well by any chance? If so I'll experience that issue then.

Yeah I had that prob with one of my DVD players which had to be replaced. The lens cleaners I tried did nothing to fix it. Oddly my 11 year old CD player unit on my hi-fi still works perfectly despite never been cleaned ever and hours upon hours of use weekly.
Maybe Nintendo should release some kind of official lens cleaner that would help prevent the problem due to a custom design?
Just wondering, does anyone know why one of those DVD Lens cleaning kits wouldn't solve this?
I think the drive is customised in order to prevent piracy. (It either spins in the wrong direction or reads from edge of disc towards centre or something)

It would definitely be cheaper for them to release an official kit then rather than have all the Wiis go back. What happens next year when it all happens again?
The balls in your court now big N. Let's see what you do with it.
Out of all the consoles I've owned, it is ironic that I have had the most trouble with the Wii.
When I first got my Wii, it wouldn't read discs, (or accept them into the disc tray), but this problem seemed to correct itself and hasn't bothered me since, so I didn't return it. That was an obvious hardware problem specific to my console. However, my Wii does seem to crash, especially when playing VC games (and it crashed a couple of times on MP3 which was v. annoying)!
In general I think the consoles this generation are glitchier than the last...
No problems with my drive on the Wii. Only things wrong with mine is that the flaps hiding the GC sockets fall off when open. And the fans seem louder than normal for about 3 minutes when the console is first turned on after not being played for a while.
red rings of death, wiis not playing games, this generation of consoles are shaping up to be a sorry bunch indeed. is it too much to f**king ask that our consoles can do the one thing they were made to do?
another thing, of all the games for the console to have trouble with, does anyone else find it really funny that it's a first party AAA title that has the trouble? almost as funny as if it were Zelda or Mario
my wii never crashed while playing games ive had it since the day it came out, only problem ive had was it crashing online while playing flash vids but i think nintendo sorted that out with the firmware update.wen are nintendo going to update the flash player on wii????i cant watch vids on ign or this site cos wii's flash player is old it needs an update.

Tis a bit of a bummer, but we won't be getting a recent flash player for the Internet Channel for quite some time. It's because Nintendo have a one-off charge to download the browser, thus they're only allowed to use older versions - one of the conditions of use.
this is pretty funny though .. the reason it is funny is that people who have made backups of the SSBB disc and burned it on a DL disc have not had any problems with it.. So backup DL disc's work flawless..originals do not..another reason why someone would install a chip..to be able to play the games you bought
