Half-Life 2 powered shooter - first screens

Third-person blaster Salvation using Valve's Source engine
First screenshots have revealed Salvation, a third-person shooter in development for PC and Xbox 360 that's built on Valve Software's Source tech.

Ukraine-based Black Wing Foundation is behind the title, which is set in the near future and deals with an Earth where the powers that be have attempted to commune with God via science. That's never a good thing in our book.

An emerging regime controls the world's population via a merging of religion and technology which has led to crime being punishable by sentence in a cybernetic virtual environment labelled Hell.

"In year 2026", Black Wing Foundation explains, "the dissidents, profoundly individual people across the globe set up scattered resistance teams and try to topple the regime. They wage invisible wars, but the strengths are far from being equal...

"The protagonists of the game are people from various climes with different past, but common and terrifying present. They are bound together with the idea of overthrowing the Regime and destroying the Hell and Paradise virtual systems. They will have to overcome many obstacles on their way to the truth, hidden from people by the New World Government."

That's far too heavy stuff for this early on a Tuesday morning, which is why we're more interested in the screenshots.

Salvation is currently pencilled in for a Q2 2009 release.

looking very dated & generic?...

And therefore fits right in with the current crop of games?

Looks like half life, not just cause the engine is the same but the buildings and that robot thing in screen five but the ideas good, if not a bit over coverluted.

Halo 3 brute hammer?

Oh dear... at least they should use a different crosshair, and different textures... and a little bit different architecture. Sorry, but it just looks like a mod.

Project H.A.M.M.E.R says hello.

Bunch of bloody winge bags. Like you're all connoisseurs.

Maybe it's early, because when devs make games they're gorgeous from day 1. *tsk*

I like the idea... hopefully it could develop into something meaty.

I hope it turns out to be a f**king brilliant game. Yes, they're using outdated technology and yes they've borrowed art assets from Valve, but if it turns out to be an excellent game on top of that then asset sharing will become more common and companies can concentrate more on building a great gameplay experience than wasting thousands of man hours creating new assets.

I don't know. It seems like pretty much everyone agrees that technology moves too fast in this industry and that gameplay matters, but when they see their 'thoughts' on paper they do an immediate 180, at least until the next time some s**t like CliffyB opens his pretentious, mob-pandering gob again. Fickle bastards.

Is that a re-skinned combine train in screen 2 ?

looks like...a game. Generic and bland.
Waste_Manager on 11 Mar '08
I like the Source engine for single player games, it's got a lot of flexibility and is well optimised...this could be interesting...no doubt to be released via Steam!

The Combine train is less curvy.

easy ppl.....the game's not due 'till Q2 2009. A lot can change between now and then. I dare say the devs recyled a lot from HL2 to get the gameworld up and running. They have between now and Q2 2009 to change the style to suite their game. It's a little early to judge imo.

Religion and science? Scientolo- No wait, it can't be.

Bashing people with a big hammer until they stop bugging you? Scientolo- Hold up.

Hmmm...

At least you won't have to worry about having a monster system to run the game. Give me a decent story and make the game solid and I'll be pretty happy. I don't know if I am just getting old (Played my first video game in the 70s) *hates using the term video game* but a compelling storyline is a real pull to me.

could be good, it may look dated by ut3 and crysis standards but if valve have proved anything it is that you don't need the best graphics engine to make good games.

i like the source engine as it runs well on a lot of different specs but still looks ok has decent interactivity.

Its not the graphs that look dated, its the design.

Awesome concept! Hope they can deliver on the game.

Awesome concept! Hope they can deliver on the game.

Yeah definatly sounds likfe a new and awesome idea for a story but after seeing the screens,my first thought was Half-Life 2 mod or carbon copy.Well they do have over a year to release and who knows, maybe they only started production a week ago so thats why it looks identical to HL2.
