"Next-gen" Mortal Kombat this year

Radical changes expected in first 360 and PS3 fighter instalment
Midway has admitted what we all knew already; there's a new Mortal Kombat game coming out, but what we didn't know is that it'll be out this year.

Nothing is known about the new instalment except that it's likely to be in development for Xbox 360 and PS3, which will make it the first instalment on current-gen consoles (if you don't count Armageddon on Wii).

"Our focus really is not so much on the number of games as it is on creating games that are going to breakthrough and doing a better job of that historically," Midway boss David Zucker said during a conference call today.

"Games like This Is Vegas and of course you got [the] Mortal Kombat game this year and others that we think have potential to give us higher unit numbers."

Series mastermind Ed Boon has said that the last Mortal Kombat instalment, Armageddon was the last we'd see of the fighter in its "current form", so we're expecting some radical changes in whatever game's coming next (though hopefully it'll still be stupidly violent).

2008 the year of the fighting games.

I just hope it's not got a broken system like the last MK games did, if you're going to compete with Tekken 6, Soul Calibur IV and Street Fighter 4 you can't have infinite combos for every character.

recent games in the series have been poor, this classic needs a new approach.

I thought deadly Alliance on the PS2 was quite a good MK game.
spooney100 on 13 Mar '08
Never liked the original, always a SF II fan.

lets wait and see.

Disagree. Shaolin Monks on the Xbox was sublime.
Mogs on 13 Mar '08
Cool I'll be pleased to see mortal kombat again armageddon was a good game but not having proper fatalities in it was a mistake.
steve w on 13 Mar '08
Gory 3D blood splattered finishing moves eh? Get over here!
Kidding, don't like this kind of game.

100% agree
leeb1977 on 13 Mar '08
i'm pretty sure people only liked MK for the violent finishing moves...once you've done them on each char..you just put on a decent fighting game..such as SF.
i really dont see MK appeal to me know im not a naughty kiddie playing violent games.
MK is the yawnage
nologo on 13 Mar '08
It never felt the same with the crap cartoony graphics.

They should hire artists that can produce photo realistic humans and monsters. No one cared when it was realised. It didnt get any attention from the press.

Maybe make it 2d.

3d is s**t.
jonnysix on 13 Mar '08
Ah, the old "SF is better than MK" argument even though they're both basically the same thing. Nostalgic. Cool
Mogs on 13 Mar '08
Did MK ever move to 3D? I think #2 was the last one I played so I don't know. If not, that's where they'll be going, especially since SF4 is going the opposite way.

I'd also like to see the violence done in a more realistic style. The massive red spurts of the first few games looked ridiculous. I want to rip off some guys arms and have it look like I was actually ripping his arms off. In fact, I want a close-up of his face so I can SEE the pain he's in.
Hang on, does that make me sound like a nutjob or what?

Hugs and puppies, everyone should have a lollipop. There we go, all sorted.

They seriously need to take Mortal Kombat back to its roots. The games have just got more and more out there and away with the fairies. MK has never taken itself too seriously anyway, but it needs to be pulled back in abit.

You know what I'd love to see? A brand new 2D Mortal Kombat game using up to date technology. It could be done!

Shaolin Monks was a great game - captured the feeling of the first 2 Mortal Kombat games brilliantly. But SM was more of an adventure game. What we need though, is a brand new 2D Mortal Kombat Very Happy

Disagree with most of you. The recent games were good fighting games. Bringing in 2styles & weapon combo mixing was new. Not sure how else they could improve on the mechanics. Giving each character their own signature fatality would regain some of the credit lost with Armageddon.
But i do think what they MUST do is make a follow up to Shaolin Monks. That game was loadsa fun & how do you better. Make it bigger, prettier & give it more characters & moves of course. Maybe centre the story around MK3/trilogy (The Outworld Invasion Saga).

I may get this one day when it lowers in price a after it's launch but to be honest i think the series focuses way too much on violence. I like the violence but find the gameplay a little dull in comparison-it's ok, nothing special.

VF5 i don't have the patience for but may pick up one day, and Soul Calibur with Star Wars characters i will be saying no to. Tekken for me all the way.

MK Wii is a pretty good game, The motion sensing is good, but classic control options for traditional gameplay was a good idea too.
The DS game is a perfect conversion of the best MK ever released - with added puzzle kombat

MK has never been a deep game, but its still good fun,
Im not one for unneccessary violence, but the over the top comic style to MK games is pretty funny.

Favourite move ever = Quan Chi pulling a leg off his opponent and beating him to death with it, with blood going everywhere (MK4)
nuggit3000 on 13 Mar '08
All Mortal Kombat ever needed was a decent fight engine. Something like DOA or Tekken, and then chuck in finishing moves! The only things needed to make any fighter into Mortal Kombat are fatalities and Sub Zero. Please Midway, just steal a fighting engine from a good game.

MK: Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon were broken beyond any other fighting game before them.

For starters none of them have move lists that use frame rate to keep things balanced, a roundhouse kick takes less time to execute and less time to recover from than a simple jab for example. Because of this, 95% of each characters move list are useless. All you have to do is find a characters most useful 5-6 moves.

Competitive MK: DA, D and A matches require no skill, it's a simple case of trapping your opponent in your characters' respective infinite combo to win the match.

This on top or various problems that needed fixing previously (no throw escapes, dial-a-combos that once started, also cannot be escaped) leaves me with little hope for Next-Gen MK, Ed Boon and his team are incapable of making a standard 3D fighting engine.
FLStyle on 13 Mar '08
I doubt it will happen but being a fan of the series over time I would like to see them ty and make a scrolling beat em up again like they tried with Shaolin Monks. I realy liked the old 2d Mortal Kombat games but feel the series has lost its way and run out of ideas. Shaolin Monks although flawed in some places did have some very fun parts in others and I am getting a little tired of one-on-one beat em ups. I would defintily welcome a Mortal Kombat themed side scrolling 3d beat em up, although as I said I seriously doubt it will happen in the next instalment.

Agree with you about the fact that MK isn't a deep game - but, it is fun - I remember huge MK2 sessions on the Megadrive, it was a great and balanced fighter.

Favourite move? - maybe being a little nostalgic, but; it's Sub-Zeros original finisher (taught to me by a guy in an arcade in Landudno, Wales)....

towards, down, towards, away, away, A button (or is that the Megadrive version I remember?...too long ago now...actually, that could even be Kanos finishing move from MK1 - anyone remember?!)

Smile

Yeah. More Mortal Kombat. Nice one. Here's an idea - no one buys it, they stop making them. C'mon - WE CAN DO IT! RESIST!

Buy Virtua Fighter 5 instead. Or 4 if you only have a PS2! Or Soul Caliber 4. Or Street Fighter 4. Or TekkenVery HappyR.

Buy anything... except Mortal Kombat.
