Microsoft is confident that having a huge library of games on its console will attract the mainstream masses, as it says Xbox 360 will be the first current-gen console to reach a games library of 1000 games this summer (that's Xbox Live Arcade included).
That's according to European Xbox VP Chris Lewis, who told trade mag MCV that, coupled with Xbox Live, the milestone will help attract more mainstream consumers to Microsoft's console.
"We'll have north of 1,000 games on 360 by the summer, across Live and boxed product," Lewis said. "Titles such as our sports games, Scene It! and Guitar Hero - which has become a preferential experience on Xbox 360 - has already proved that, and we have lot more coming in that space this year.
"The number of people that have signed up to the Live service so far is testament to the fact that there are a broad spectrum of consumers enjoying the service," he added.
"That can only grow as we expand the likes of Live Arcade and Live Video Store. We're listening hard to what casual consumers want as you see us release more and more content that appeals to a broad audience."
They're being a bit cheeky with the numbers (of course they haven't got 1000 boxed games yet) but of course 360's massive games library isn't something to be snuffed at. After all, isn't the unmatched variety of games the reasons so many people bought PS2s?
I suppose the good thing about having that many games out is that only 3% of them actually have to be good to warrant purchasing the console, as vary rarely do most people ever buy more than 30 games for any console.
(unless you're a complete obsessive, like some of us are. )
Having a 97% allowance for crap games sure goes a long way in these things... Luckily for all involved.
"Variety is the spice of life" amd all that. Yes, i am still happy that i chose to opt for the Xbox360. An unbeatable selction of games as far as i am concerned, and that's all that matters to me at the end of the day. I don't care who makes the machine, just give me the software and i'm right behind you.
more MS trash talking. who cares 1000 games? lucky if even 5% of them are decent! its only idiots who buy most of these 1000 games based on how the cover looks!
Wasn't that exactly how Sony succeeded with the PS2?
In fact, thinking about it, didn't Sony supporters say over and over at the time that more power (as in the XBox) was irrelevant and it was all about the games?
Wait I was gonna say something clever but now I forgot . . . oh yeah,as a 360 owner I really dont care how many games are out for the machine,I'll just buy the ones that interest me so the rest can gather dust on the shelves(I'm looking at you Kyne & Linch ).So it doesn't matter if there are 1000 games or 10000 or 10 million, just buy the ones you want and pray that your gran doesn't buy you something that's gathering dust on the shelves.
While its still outselling the PS3 and Wii thats a pathetic attempt at a joke.
I think the 1000 games are worldwide of course, same title different region, all companies count this way, imo is wrong as this figure isn't a total of different games, which is probably around the 400-500 mark.

Agreed. The majority of any library will always be crap, but as long as there are enough good games that I will like, I'm happy. 3% of 1000 is about right, but at the end of the console cycle, I would be happy with less than 1% quality titles! I currently have 7 boxed retail Xbox 360 games (probably a lot considering I've only had it 5 months), and honestly only bought the console for 2 of them (Bioshock and Mass Effect).
The most games I'd ever bought was for the PS2 (around 30 games), and even then I never got round to playing them all!
I'm dsorry, but bragging about this just reminds me they released a console a year early, with problems such as the RRoD. It's a good console, but this bragging has to stop, all trying to get one over on each other as the Wii shoots ahead...
It had a bloody well years headstart, so this is just pointing out the obvious, and bragging about something that doesn't need to be bragged about.
It's a press release so cool your jets. Still it's an impressive figure (although as you all say there are a some duds and too many FPS titles in there).
On balance though the selection is truly remarkable with many being 360 exclusive. Best platform by a mile and at the end of the day that sums it up.
Couldn't resist posting this. With the wave of 360 Advertisements in a price drop, in the Metro newspaper there was one, a picture of a 360, and next to it a 360 with loads of writing in-reasons to get it. One of the top ones was "over 300 games". This made me laugh, how many XBLA games are there
If you're going to brag, leave it to the adverts...

1000 games but the average person only buys 7 games for it, which is said to be the highest attach rate ever- I doubt it, considering that some games used to be Ł2.99 brand new on the C64.

lol, I'm in your camp then. I've got 60 360 games and I enjoy playing all of them. I don't care about the milestone, so long as the good games outweigh the bad or at the very least make it worth having the machine, and I think they currently do.

Right on. The PS1 had loads of games, but how many were any good? MS are becoming dumber by the day.

By my reckoning, a good console shouldn't die on you as the 360 does. I used to love mine until it RROD'd on me. It's got great support, but the build quality is abysmal.
