Sony Pictures Entertainment put its hands up and admitted more than a year ago that it was on the case with turning Konami's much-loved stealth series Metal Gear Solid into a motion picture, but we haven't heard anything since... until now.
Movie website Coming Soon has broken the silence on the MGS flick, piping up to say that Equilibrium director Kurt Wimmer is being eyed by movie bosses to head up the big screen adaptation.
According to the site, Sony bosses hope to meet with Wimmer in the next few weeks to talk about him writing the script (and presumably directing), so there'll likely be more development with the Metal Gear film soon - especially when MGS4 goes retail-mental in June.
Of course Hideo Kojima's series has always been the obvious choice for a game-to-film adaptation (it's half way to being a film already with the 45 minute cut-scenes and all), but we're still hoping hard that the film gurus don't bugger it up.
"It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie-telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'," Sony Pictures Vice Chairman Yair Laundau said of the project.
While equilibrium rocks do we really need a MGS film? Surely the game is enough of a film already. I love Metal Gear but don't think a film is necessary, we already have Escape from New York and LA, Curt Russel is totaly Snake lol
Prefered Equillibrium over Matrix 2 & 3 (first one was amazing) so I think the director is fairly competent, but Kurt Russel as Snake hmmm. . .I guess if they base the movie on MGS4 where Snake is old and grey then yeah he would fit.
Whilst Wimmer makes half-decent films, I think Kojima-san would have other directors on his wish-list that he would prefer translating his baby for the big screen.
You're right - Kurt Russell could be a little old to kick-start the series. Hugh Jackman, anyone?

Seriously dude watch Escape from LA staring Kurt Russel (or check it out on youtube), you will totaly see where Kojima got his idea for Solid Snake from. I mean Russels name in the film is Snake Pliskin, if youv'e played MGS 2 you will understand.
game to movie adaptions never work, plus it'll be hollywood and alienate metal gear fans making it ott and really crap,
actorwise it can only be kurt russel, if it were to be anything half decent, common hideo kojima based snake on the character snake out of the escape from NY/LA films
i would prefere hideo to go back to MGS and make in the entire movie in CGI sticking accurately as possible to the games, therefore the likes of snake, ocelot and all the other fan faves have the voices and look like how there ment to look

you certianly banged on the head there, Kojima did said one time that he got his Snake character from Kurt Russel, he mainly based his games from that movie
i know that films based on games never do well, but i think i only seen street fighter and resident evil 1&2, but i like those 2 resi films, dont know about you lot, but wat im only concered here is that this MGS film doesnt get mucked up and be another badly games to film result

why not? i always prefer original versions than up-to-date versions (i always think the old ones are better than the newer ones, like film remakes or cartoons, i always say the original is better), wen this film is out, im more likely to think "i prefer david's snake voice than this actor's", but thats how it goes, it would be good if they did do a actual movie out of the games graphics, although they did do a movie for MGS3 but thats just the cutscenes stuck together with some new ones, hardly a proper movie. but i did hear last year that Kojima is going to be part of the film crew like a co-producer, but that might have been a rumour, but if its true, maybe he will save the film from disaster (well at least he stopped Uwe Boll doing the directors job)
Gerad Butler would be a great choice for Snake, but David Hayter has to dub the entire film, otherwise it will suck.
Also, the film has to be about Shadow Moses, to the T. I'm sick of gmaes to film conversions that don't follow this line. Either make it about the game entirely, or f**k off. Who cares if we've already played it and will know the ending? Some older people will have never played metal gear solid, and why the chuff do I still play that game, if I know the ending? Huh? HUH?

Yes yes Kurt Russel is perfect to play Snake but I think he is a bit too old to play Snake from MGS 1 - 3.In MGS4 Snake is older and TOTALLY looks like Kurt Russel, but not the earlier games.

As long as they keep the story of the movie exactly like that of the game (I suppose MGS on the PS is the most likely) and don't take pieces from each game to make a big mish-mash mess, this could be vey good....
I watched Escape form LA last night, after reading this article. Christ, the film is s**t, and the characters were lame, but you can see whereHideo got his ideas from, and I will say that he bettereed the Russell film by miles.
Screw the Live action stuff lets have it like Beowulf.....Ray Winston as Beowulf was sooo much better animated seeing that he's too old to pull off convincing action sequences but we still got the quality actor in the dialogue. Sooo shove in Kurt Russell and hopefully it'll work better as we get the Visuals and the Action and he wont have to wear a girdle.lol.
Kurt Russell..Meh! As long as he has more of script that he did in that useless excuse for a movie 'Soldier' I think as the main lead he had all of 3 lines.
