Check back at 6pm this afternoon for CVG's hands-on impressions with GTA IV's multiplayer mode. In the mean time, here are the first details from magazine reports last month...
GTA IV's 15 (yes - fifteen) multiplayer modes have been revealed, in Spain's edition of PSM3 Magazine.
Online multiplayer is accessed through Niko's mobile in the single-player game, where you can join up to 15 other players for shootouts and customise your character, right down to his or her race, hair and clothing.
As well as the obligatory deathmatch and team deathmatch modes, GTA IV's awesome-sounding list of game modes includes a Race mode around Liberty City, four-player co-op fights against the police and the very obvious cops vs. crooks team game.
One mode, Hangman's Noose, is based on a mission from the single-player campaign which has you protecting Mafia man Kenny Petrovic with up to four team mates. Very quickly you're ambushed by SWAT teams and have to fight and protect your way across the city.
In comparison Mafia and Team Mafia are more simple fetch-quests, with each player being dished out the same co-ordinates and tasks around the city, and everyone dashing to finish it first.
Bomb Da Base and others are presumably the same as the identically-named modes in the PSP Grand Theft Autos. "Free Roam" is presumably a glorified chat room, which sounds like a decent addition to us.

Those sound excellent, then ones im most interested in being the Race round liberty city, the one where you race to the co-ordinates (Ala The Simpsons Road Rage) and the Cops vs Crooks game mode.
I also think these will only be fun when your with your mates, not some random stranges with names like "Noobifier!!!!11!".

I'm impressed. I wasn't expecting much co-op and generally wasn't interested in multiplayer modes in a sandbox game after trying Saints Row, but there are a lot of different game types and there's bound to be a couple that are decent. 15 more reasons to buy GTA4 I suppose.
Sounds ok but i doubt ill ever use it,it will no doubt be a game i play only with people on my friends list, kind of like every other game i play on XBL.

Great news. I was hoping Rockstar had something in store for the online side of things. Will be great to play co-op etc over LIVE with my friends.

MGS4 - Yep Killzone 2 - Based on the original, no thanks... Getaway - Not even out this year and a poor man's GTA Haze - Yet another FPS that will stuggle to make a name for itself... RE5 - Not even out this year... LBP - Looks great from a creative point of view Motorstorm 2 - Original was decent. Hopefully this is a more 'complete' game... GT5 - Not a racing sim but looks same old to me...
So yeah, it's just you. 360 looks more likely to own this tear but 2009 looks like Sony's year with huge hitters such as FF13 and God of War 3.

Yes, the PS3 will own this year... because of all the other games you metioned. You can hardly use GTA4 as an example, when PS3 owners are getting the rough end of the deal
I'm not going to get to excited because they will no doubt restrict the map for multi-player and it could be ballocks....a full on PROBER co-op mode like in Crackdown would be miles better than these cheap add ons

r* have said both main games are the same with niether missing content. i personally think the dlc on the xbox will be some sort of extra story line possibly following another charcter very much like the blue shift add on for half life and as for the multiplayer i'll wait for it to be confirmed by r* before i get excited as there is nothing on the offical website yet www.rockstargames.com/IV/

A PC version will most definately happen, it makes sense.
And as for the bit about it being 'superior' - I don't know, alot PC gamers think it's the platform more suited for games.
its ok on the pc due to the sharper picture but it feels more at home on a console and now with the 360/ps3 both outputting hd i can't see the pc version being "superior"

Shut the hell up. I love GTA, and I love Saints Row. I PERSONALLY feel that Saints Row took the gameplay of GTA and made it's own style.
I PERSONALLY prefer a game of this type to let me make my own character and be who I want to be, rather than being shoe-horned into the same old 'rise to glory' gangster-type. It's the 9th GTA game now, surely they could come up with something more original?
I PERSONALLY love my co-op, which means GTAIV loses points massively from me, and Saints Row 2 gains a huge A+ in terms of multiplayer.
I PERSONALLY think that GTA was very stale and Saints Row brought a lot of new features and gameplay enhancements that forced Rockstar to take a look at what they were going to do for GTAIV. You cannot look at GTAIV and say it took nothing from Saints Row. I still can't believe the amount of people that thought GTAIV was innovating because it let you smash through your windscreen. Saints Row basically had a whole damn mini-game built on it (I wouldnt be surprised if GTAIV had the same kind of insurance fraud mission from SR)
And to me, PERSONALLY, I believe Rockstar are going backwards now. No aircraft? Same city with upgrades? As I've said TIME and time again, I will love GTAIV. But I PERSONALLY will enjoy SR2 much more.

Yeah, no doubt it'll attract all the idiots like flypaper - I'll avoid it for the same reason.
Having said that, it all makes a nice addition to what I expect to be one seriously great single-player game and they could be really cool if you just stick to your friends list.
