Confirmation that BioWare's Mass Effect was PC-bound didn't exactly blow us away with an explosion of surprise. What did raise an eyebrow, however, was the relatively short time-gap between the two releases. On Xbox 360 the sci-fi RPG launched last November to wide critical acclaim, and it's out this May on PC.
BioWare began whipping the PC iteration into shape toward the tail-end of work on the Xbox 360 version. And it says it didn't simply want to do a straight port.
To this end, PC gamers can run Mass Effect in higher resolution with up-scaled textures, environments and character models, bla, bla bla...
More interestingly, on PC the game features an improved user interface, the ability to control squad members individually and what BioWare's terming "Run & Gun Control". Hmmm.
Run & Gun Control refers to the optional ability to assign biotics - essentially special powers for your character - to keys 1 to 8 for on-the-fly use. On Xbox 360, you had to pause the action and select a biotic from a radial menu. Lord bless the keyboard.
Following a short briefing on the additions to Mass Effect on PC, BioWare senior PR manager Matt Atwood sat down with us for a chat...
Is Mass Effect on PC the definitive version of the game?
Matt Atwood: I don't know if I'd say it's the definitive version. I think both versions were constructed really well for the platforms they're on. But I do think the PC version really adds some things that are nice. Higher-resolution visuals? That's exciting.
I love the individual squad command. If you play with the individual squad control, it's a deeper tactical game - it has more impact than I think people realise. As is the hot keys for the biotic powers. You can really play it more action style.
It'll have the achievement system just like the Xbox 360 version did - we'll be hosting that on our servers. That's just another fun part to make sure you've done all the elements of the game.
You've just released the Bring Down the Sky content for Mass Effect on Xbox 360. Is that being included out-the-box with the PC version?
Atwood: We're still working on what we'll include as far as additional content. Of course we'll have more 360 downloadable content on the way and we're working on what content we want for the PC as well. So will that be Bring Down the Sky? We don't know yet.
Will it be something totally different or will we combine and do the post-release content for both? Right now we're thinking there's some great opportunities for the PC that maybe we could take advantage of. We're in the exploration phase right now.
Hypothetically, if you released the same content for Xbox 360 and PC, would you charge for both, or would the PC content be free or what?
Atwood: Speaking hypothetically...? You know, I'd rather just answer the question with "I don't know". I don't know the answer to that yet. Would I guess that there's a whole bunch of considerations going on right now including that? Yes.
But of course, as you know, when you post anything online people start to read into it and I'd rather just say "I don't know" right now. Give us a bit of time and we'll let you know what we're going to do.
So what's next for Mass Effect on Xbox 360 in terms of download content? Can you talk about that?
Atwood: No. There is stuff coming, a good amount of content coming, but we've not announced anything yet and we want to keep it secret for now.
Are there still 'new features' announcements to come for Mass Effect on PC?
Atwood: I think there's a good chance you'll some things that we haven't announced yet. We're always looking to add as much as we can to make a greater experience for the players.
You were saying earlier that BioWare wants to get quicker and quicker each time between the releases of console and PC versions of games - does that mean you're looking at releasing Mass Effect 2 simultaneously?
Atwood: We haven't solidified plans yet. We're heading in a direction where we want to be as close as possible. I believe we'll be 360-exclusive at least for a short period of time... But I think you'll see a PC version not too far away.
With the second game in the series, what core ideas and features of the first game are you looking to build on?
Atwood: Obviously I can only speak pretty generally at this point. I can tell you one thing - dramatically... people are going to go "wow", really almost right from the beginning.
That's a big part of it. Mass Effect really is all about dramatics and cinematics and choices and exploration, and I think we'll expand in each of those areas. I think Greg [Greg Zeschuk, BioWare president] has talked about maybe making some of the exploration more accessible - something like that.
How do we make what you did in the first game affect what's happening in the second game? Those are ideas we're looking into. Who is the main character? Who will re-appear in the game?
There is a story arc already written for the whole thing... I do know that the level of impact from a wow factor, a dramatic factor, is going to be really quite compelling in the next game. I think people are going to be thrilled.
Mass Effect 2's release date - how long will we have to wait?
Atwood: I will tell you it won't be three and a half years or four years, which is what the first one took to create. Beyond that we haven't disclosed anything. We'd like to see it soon, but as the old saying goes, we will sell no wine before it's time.
The team's working hard already but they're going to make sure it's just right... hopefully [it will be] sooner than later. I don't know if it's sooner that you expect, or what you expect, so we'll just wait and see and once we're ready to divulge the date we'll let you know.
Well seeing as I've run out of internal organs to pawn for a pc upgrade over the past few years,I'll stick to my360 version thank you.But must say,PC gamers are in for a huge treat!
Looking forward to this, but I'll be getting a second hand copy. Not giving EA a single penny of my cash, ESPECIALLY for a game that they had F**K ALL to do with.
"We haven't solidified plans yet. We're heading in a direction where we want to be as close as possible. I believe we'll be 360-exclusive at least for a short period of time... But I think you'll see a PC version not too far away."
Well, I think that sentance puts to bed any PS3 rumours. The 360 exclusive is ended with a PC version, nothing more.
personally i agree that the PC is the best platform but its not for people who dont like messing about with upgrading and checking system requirements etc. the PC is a complicated platform with installs and mods and everything, making it a more hardcore base. im not saying that the consoles cant be for gamers but its an undeniable fact that consoles are more accessible and easy to use than a PC. its all down to what you want, and for me thats the PC. i think its the one gaming platform that will exist until the end of the earth, but others would disagree - its all down to tastes.
as for mass effect, ill definately be getting this on release no matter what, as ive heard nothing but good things about it. im glad its come to the PC. WOOT!
some of the things PC mas effect gets that the xbox one didnt get makes me sad lol, but we got it earlioer hehehe. Its not an EA game its still bioware, so people woh dont want to get the game because EA are working with Bioware will miss out on a great game.
and to comment on the platforms, i think all have there pros and cons, i myself have PC and xbox, i agree, PC is able to go hardcore (really do u need a water cooling system? i dont really think thats gonna impress the ladies at the end of the day , woh knows lol) One thing i liked about the xbox i never had tow oryr about being able to run the game, i just by and go. But having a PC and xbox i got the ebst of both worlds ^.^
