Funcom has said Age of Conan will never attract the same number of players that have flocked to Blizzard's World of Warcraft in an interview with CVG.
"When it comes to World of Warcraft, it's going to run up to World of Warcraft and kick it in its knees, I think", product manager Erling Ellingsen quipped about the forthcoming MMO before adding: "It's never going to get the number of players World of Wacraft has".
Ellingsen likened WoW to Facebook, calling it a social phenomenon that's incredibly hard to copy. "...you can try and create the new Facebook, but will it ever become that popular?"
"But I think Age of Conan is going to appeal to a broad range of players, people who like MMOs, people who don't like MMOs", he continued.
"I've talked to so many people who have said, 'Oh I don't like MMOs', but then I start talking to them about Conan and they're like, 'Hmmm, yeah, this is maybe something I should try because this sounds different'."
Ellingsen thinks Funcom will score a lot of points from Age of Conan's combat system, which would feel right at home in a single-player action adventure game. He explained, "I think we're going to get a lot of players just because we're trying to do something different."
"I hope that the players are going to reward us for that", he said.

If I was an MMO player, I'd be really irritated by these companies (yes Microsoft, I'm looking at you!) that don't seem to want to bother with the MMO market purely because they 'can't beat WOW' - they could at least try....would they consider it a failure if they only achieved half of WOWs user-base? - surely that's still very profitable?
I actually commend other companies for not just blindly jumping on the MMO bandwagon - the market is absolutely saturated with them right now, and like 95% of them are s**t. So many of them also become vapourware, and for good reason. Check out mmorpg.com for the list.
Funcom have a bit of experience with MMOs (Anarchy Online might not be that great, but it was sci-fi in a time of fantasy games and it's still going now) so hopefully they'll know what they're doing.
My biggest issue with MMOs is that they are entirely controlled by numbers. A compeltely unskilled player can be the best in the game simply by accessing better equipment. Then it's "attack on" and AFK. Imagine you could do the same in (for example) CoD4 just because you'd unlocked the top weapons - people wouldn't stand for it.
And the grind. The endless grind of "I must get this level, I must get the next level, I'm not worth anything unless I'm the highest level available" and standing around killing the same handful of mobs over and over and over. Ugh, I hate it so much.

He's right you know. WoW requires loads of skill. At higher resolutions, those little pictures you're required to click on every few minutes can be a bitch to hit with your cursor.
Im in beta since last September and this game sucks ass. If only you people actually knew how bad it actually is. Get prepared for another delay Hype does not meet expectations. In the case of this game I will break NDA all the time to state how poor this game actually is.

lol, thats the funniest post ive read in a while, you call him an idiot for saying people wouldnt stand for uber weapon unlocks then you moan about how its affecting you, lmao, classic, admit it, your a WoW junkie and you've never played CoD which gives you weapon upgrades in no time, oh and why would you buy a console game to want to play it with keyboard and mouse? Kinda agree here bashing a button while bunniehopping around a character in WoW with a target lock system equates to have headshot hacks and doing the same thing with any gun in a FPS.
All players are basically doing is having a toe to toe 'race to top end specials cool down', as the game requires no forward thinking as you can access all the skills of your class in the game without restarting from level 1, and with the 'uberness' of the top gear you can kill those without it just with the auto attack, like i said all players hae to do is wait... then spam. Hence why it's sooo popular, it's basically bashing the A button on a console game and it doing all work for you.

AoC is practically the same without the target lock in melee, all thats stopping it beening 'WoW2' is pc specs wait until it hits the 360 then it'll take off like free porn, in fact as has 'porn', in fact it is built like a console title... They recken the 'WoW market' wont take it up?? Which WoW are they looking at? I want to play the non-boob l33t kiddie console player version of WoW please Funcom whats the URL your researchers at looking at?
