SCEA producer, Takau Imasaki, has confirmed that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue's online mode will see updates in the future that'll add in-game voice chat and private race options to the package.
Although the game will allow for 16 players to race against each other when it launches in Europe on PSN on March 27, the online gameplay set-up options are thin on the ground.
You can only join Sony-created servers with pre-set scenarios - you can't set any gameplay options for yourself. But Imasaki promises that more options will be available - just not in time for launch.
"Private races with buddies and in-game chat are all in the works... but will not be ready from day one," Imasaki told posters on the official PlayStation blog. "Will keep you posted on the progress!" he added.
And so the package that more cynical critics call "just a demo" gets even larger.
Good luck to sony with their online service, its just strange reading about stuff that xbox players have been enjoying for 5 years or more. Fanboys have missed out on a great deal of enjoyment just because they dont like the 'other console'.

True, i would expect something like online chat to be a standard in online gaming.

I did'nt buy a console for online play predominantly. It is just a bonus in my opinion. Therefore, I get a 'great deal of enjoyment' without xmb. Also, the best games already have in-game chat and friends lists, such as COD4, Resistance and UTIII. By the time this years big hitters come out, xmb will be available. No great shakes. And no reason to pay money for the privilage either. Oh and the fact that I'd have to pay another Ł50.00 just to go wireless...
True. 360 games with online play, voice chat is a given. Why is Sony charging for a Beta?
And no, CoD4 nor any PS3 game currently has a true "in game" friends list. A 360 gamers on Xbox live has a friends list that is shared across all games that can be viewed and used to invite friends to online games at any time using the same inferface. I have a PS3 and a 360. 360 online features are waaaay ahead of the PS3. In the end, you get what you pay for.
Why is everyone so surprised at this kind of news, promises and let-downs are part of owning a PS3 aren't they?
You should at least by used to it by now. Get ready to be disappointed by GT5 anyway for those that haven't played it, the hype has already overtaken the quality of the actual game.
Look forward to GRID, a much better game judging by the screenshots, trailor, physics and damage.

360? RROD? Wireless extra? Pay for online? Pay extra for HDD? Pay for Batteries?
Yep, you certainly get what you pay for............

40GB model? 60GB model? PS2 backwards compatibility? Then not? Without rumble? With rumble? Without decent XMB?
Honestly the PSN is truly weak, How can a game be released without voice chat and the ability to create privet match, These are basic features, OMG.
You are weak.
With the release of "in game XMB" in July / August, voice chat features will be there. There is no point in reinventing the wheel in game just for a couple of months difference.
As for the online friends play, that is again partially dependent on "in game XMB" functionality - due to friends list integration.
In the meantime, play the game and get good at it.
40GB model? 60GB model? PS2 backwards compatibility? Then not? Without rumble? With rumble? Without decent XMB?
20GB model? 120GB?
XBox backwards compatibility? Only if you have Live connectivity.
You don't need Live connectivity for BC on 360, just the HDD. Download the latest patch from xbox.com onto a blank disc, lob it into the drive and away you go...
HD-DVD or not to be?
Sony finally wins a format war, something they have been trying to do since their inception of Betamax, which was a better quality. Always seems that the poorer quality format wins the war, Blu-Ray is a lesser quality than what HD-DVD was.
Wi-Fi?
Wired connection is better for online gaming.
How about below minimum standard DVD playback quality?
I don't watch films on consoles, I use consoles to play games...
It seems to me, that you need to start getting your facts right at some point.

So basically...
1.) You admit not all 360 owners have a HDD, nor will all 360 owners have a broadband connection or XBL for downloads. My facts are straight from "http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm" - i.e. the horse's mouth.
At least the 60GB PS3's could play PS2 & PS1 games out of the box, whilst 40GB machines may play PS1 games without going online. If you have a 360, no way of connecting it (no wi-fi for example) its quite possibly a case of what backward compatibility? Almost every hardware feature that comes pre-packaged with the Sony console is an expensive add on for the 360.
2.) Seems like sour grapes to me. Blu-ray is the superior format, even Michael Bay says so and I'll warrant he knows more than you about movie production and what his films are supposed to look like.
On the 360 side of things the HD DVD add-on ran through USB and didn't offer full quality sound... E.G. From "http://www.vnunet.com/computeractive/hardware/2169847/review-xbox-360-hd-dvd-drive"
"The console-based system isn’t without its drawbacks, though. In terms of sound, the 360 is technically incapable of reproducing HD DVD’s high-definition audio track and ‘down-mixes’ it to Dolby Digital. In practice, sound quality is pretty good, but the loud noise the console’s fan makes could well impede your movie-viewing pleasure."
... Nor was the 360's HD DVD device ever capable of being used for games. The 360 + HD DVD for movies = Complete failure. Even DVD playback on the standard DVD drive is literally one of the worst around.
As for HD DVD as a standard, well... Today Sony have shipped the update to allow PS3's to play v2.0 BD's. v2.0 is > HD DVD was as a standard, so now its just about what films use it and what online content appears to take advantage of it. Funny how HD DVD was never upgradable and relied completely on Micro$$$oft technology. I wouldn't buy that for a dollar.
To butch up their sales figures Toshiba included PS3's to measure attach rates and discounted PS3's when quoting number of players sold. In the meantime, Blu-ray discs sold at a ratio of at least 2:1 every week.
Quite frankly there is and can be no argument... As a standard, HD DVD now IS NOT and never would have been as good as Blu-ray.
3.) A wired connection is more reliable I agree, but that's not a quantum of solace for those who have a PS3 on the other side of the house to their (already wi-fi) router and don't fancy ripping up their floorboards.
4.) Its clear you don't watch movies on your 360 and so that's just as well as its the worst possible solution for watching DVD's or anything else. On the basis that so many 360 owners don't use their 360 for watching movies or programmes it makes me wonder why Microsoft are bothering to offer download rentals! It seems to me that every 360 owner quoting "the games" or "sticking with DVD" is either a liar or is going to get left behind in a bright digital future that will do very well without them anyway, thanks very much.
Incidentally, I play games on my PS3 too and I boast a higher 'attach rate' than the average 360 owner. I guess that's why I'm here having a chuckle at how GT5 will be the best racing game for some time. Damage? Check. Online? Check. More cars and tracks? Check. Motor magazine programmes? Check. GT5P is but the first step to baseline the previous GT games and raise the bar in terms of quality, physics, graphics, etc. Some new features may appear as DLC (e.g. damage and night driving), whilst others will be packaged into the full GT5 experience.
Considering the price, GT5P is a pretty good deal.
