"There is no dancing in Warhammer Online". That's the chorus line reply to questions asked to Mythic developers at the Warhammer press event in Paris about the lack of boogie-emotes in their MMO.
Having just played the game, and tried, as usual, to pass the time between skirmishes by /dancing with my friends, my avatar refused. 'Hank refuses to dance', said my Elven Warrior, shrugging his shoulders. I'm absolutely gobsmacked. But the controversy doesn't end there.
I asked around. Who made the decision not to include dancing? According to Erik Morgensen, who looks after the Warhammer Online project for Games Workshop, whether the Warhammer lore supported dancing. "Yes," he said. "It was Mythic's call."
So I asked Mythic's Associate Producer Josh Drescher, why? He referred me back to Eric, putting the ball (or at least, disco) back in Games Workshop's court.
"No dancing?" "No." "Even the Amish dance. Even policemen have balls." "Yes. You can juggle cats..." "But there's no dancing in Warhammer?" "No."
I'm amazed. There are six races in the game. Dwarf, Human, Chaos, Orc, High Elf and Dark Elf. All of them have legs. None of them have rhythm. Chaos should have the best moves. Orcs should rock hard. Elves should be lithe and sexy. But no. No dancing in Warhammer.
Do you think that's a good decision? Will the lack of dancing make or break your decision to play? Rant on, friends.
Since this is the geekiest fact ever, I'm pleased to report I honestly don't know if that's the case. I too haven't played in many years.
Exactly right Pentadact. Because you need to make ranks and files in Warhammer (as opposed to 40k) they are mounted on various sizes of square base.
Please don't take offence Serenity (i don't think you have but just in case) it was a joke.
As for it being the geekiest fact i don't agree with that. I know far more geeky things than that! I guess it come from half a life time playing Warhammer. Don't play any more because of various reason...
Some units in (fantasy) Warhammer could be mounted on circular bases - skirmishers, who didn't line up in rank and file, and solo characters or monsters not associated with units.
I was really excited about this game up to the point where they decided to go for the 'chaos chicken' idea.
Now I know this game will be entirely a gear grind, with no actual economy comparable with EVE and such no genuine PvP experience but a purely restrictive artificial one. This means the trade skills they're spending so much time developing are going to be pointless. On the unofficial forums, most people are commited to making sure crafted items are never as powerful as those 'earned' ones from the gear grind.
It tells me that the level system whilst at first appearing different from others, is going to be the same old one where you don't actually get more powerful; the numbers are there to restrict your access specifically along the linear path of play chosen by the developer.
Remember that Blizzard was making claims about WoW's PvP in the early stage of it's development that are just like those Mythic are making for PvP/RvR in Warhammer. It doesn't bode well when they are making similiar choices to water the actual war down.
I don't really have high hopes for any MMO anymore. Developers don't appear to get it when it comes to PvP.
Glad that dancing isn't going to be in the game. I get sick of idiots dancing near naked in MMOs, if you are bored either go out and fight something or play a different game.

How would an Eve style economy work in a Medieval era game? It would make no sense, long distance travel is rare and most realms are self supporting as a result. I'm dissapointed that crafting may be limited (hopefully not as badly as WoW), to me it should be Best Raid Stuff > Best Crafted Stuff > Best Quested Stuff (PvE wise). That way crafting is a viable alternative for everyone except the very hardcore raiders. Crafting is usually a mess when a game first gets released and only 6 months or so later can you get a real idea of crafting experience, but this is dragging this thread OT.

Naaa, you're sound. That's why there was a big smiley at the front.
Ahhhh, nostalgia.
I used to love going to my local games workshop and eyeing all the blister packs and the endless rows of hexagonal plastic paint jars. Blood Angel red, Skull White, Sunburst Yellow.
I think this is the first pack I ever bought.
I loved the dioramas too, when I saw the advert for Halo 3 it took me straight back.
I guess the first box i bought was the 2nd edition of 40k. I was 13 and the year was 1995. Feels like a long time ago now. I guess it IS a long time ago now.
before the beta was delayed before christmas i won a competition with PC Gamer Mag were i was supposed to get a beta key.
i thaught 'ok so when it comes round i will get it then' but noohooo i get bugger all, this sucks
ok so i got a new mouse and surround sound speakers for my computer, and i get a t-shirt and a usless strap thingy with warhammer written on it, but i didnt get my flippin beta did i? DID I!?!?
oh well i guess ill live its not like i was ever a fan of the board game, or the computer games of warhammer for that matter
If you don't like an aspect don't play the game! It is as simple as that. The fact that there is no dancing appeals to me! Why must you turn every game into some version of carebears 2.0?
I have never once read an account of ancient warfare where soldiers fought a little. Then danced. It takes away from MMOs in my opinion. It is one reason why I could never stand WoW or Guild Wars. There is too much emphasis on cutesie s***. I want a game that is violent, bloody, dark, and dirty.
If you are so much of a shut in that you need a "/dance" command I suggest you try leaving your house some time a try meeting a woman. Twenty bucks says you write from home and email your craptastic articles into PCGamer. Amirite?
The dancing is pop-culture. I say leave the pop-culture references to WoW. The serious gritty war-torn fantasy is Warhammer and the dancing would seem out of place in that universe.
