PlayStation Store accounts breached, Sony warns

It's possible that a "small percentage" of users have had their passwords changed
Sony Computer Entertainment has issued a statement warning that a "small percentage" of PlayStation Store accounts may have been breached, and subsequently had their passwords changed.

The company says it's working around the clock to rectify the problem, though it notes that because entire details aren't displayed on the Store, the chances of your credit card information being leaked is "very unlikely".

"We have investigated the extent of unauthorized access and possible alteration of passwords that could have occurred before corrective measures were taken, and are directly contacting customers who may have been affected by this incident," the statement says.

"In order to verify that your account is intact, we strongly suggest that PLAYSTATIONNetwork users sign in to the service. If you can successfully sign in with your pre-set password, your account is not affected by this incident.

"For more information, please contact Customer Service."

I really don't see what Sony (or MS for XBLA) can do about this.
Surely its up to the individual to keep their password secret and share their details with noone.
If they give out their password to randoms online or elsewhere they're asking for it!

^exactly it's people with stupid passwords like 1234567 and who tell others that will have been hacked.

i dunno whats wrong with giving your pw out to strangers on the internet. surely everybody in the world is trustworthy?
i know i am.
mr barclays came to my front door the other day, he said he'd come to see me personally to check i was happy with the service i was getting at the bank.
after giving him my online banking details so he could "check everything was in order" back at the office, i wished him a nice day and waved him goodbye.

I love the phishing emails I get from Nat-West I like nothing better than clicking the links and giving some great usernames, passwords and pins. Shame I dont have A Nat-West account though Wink

if someone wants to hack into my account and buy me pixel junk monsters and all the resistance -map packs, then they can hack in as much as they want...if you have an account, make sure you only add money to it when you want to buy something from it, don't have a large amount of money in it just in case you want to buy something in the future.

my mate got one of those emails the other day when he was checking his mail on my laptop.
the f'ing idiot was going to do it until i leapt to the rescue snatching the laptop out of his hands.
it wasnt him getting his account hacked into i was worried about. i didnt want any spyware getting on my laptop if he'd clicked the link lol

I know exactly where you're coming from... I had a similar experience the other day with the wallet inspector. He stopped me on the street because apparently my cash and cards had dangerous levels of "fiduciary" something-or-other, so the nice chap offered to take it all away and have it cleaned for free. I think we should be glad these people are so pro-active.

i agree with you guys the other day i was stopped at some traffic lights when some nice youths in hoodies said that they would be quite happy to reduce my carbon footprint and take my car, such a considerate generation.

i got problem, when performing internet connection test it stops at playstation network and says 'failed', below is info that my password or email is incorrect but i don't have problems with signing in to psn
Aphexman on 27 Mar '08
crap, unlucky mate I'd give Sony a call and tell em whaat's happening should sort it out for you. Good Luck.
AmhrannabhFiann on 27 Mar '08
I have problems getting into my account through the PS3 too, says my password is incorrect, I know its correct though. Weird as I'm super careful using the net and have never given out my password for anything before. Customer services have been emailed.
xVocalTestx on 27 Mar '08
Well at least they won't have many downloads to waste people's money with, the stores emptier than a Micheal Jackson branded nursey!!!

I'm all for ps3 other than the badly supported store I hasten to add.
duncanskuse on 27 Mar '08
Some idiots give out their passwords to peasants, begging for them to share store games with them, on the Official forum.

Well for some strange reason I trust in the security I have setup on my PC (usually misplaced trust I hasten to add). Plus it only takes 5 minutes to re-image my PC in case of badness creeping in. I just love the thought of the phishers hitting a nice brick wall when they try the usernames/passwords/pins I supply to them.

As for the replies here about it's the users fault I have only read that the accounts/psn was hacked not done by phishing or people being a little thick. Anyone know any different?
