You can steal cars, punch old people and shoot police in GTA IV, but don't worry lads - the game we're all waiting for had been given the green light.
In the wake of the recent ratings-focused hereByron report, as well as the Manhunt 2 banning debacle last year, the more paranoid of you may have been worried about GTA IV getting through the ratings boards.
But the BBFC, who effectively banned Rockstar's Manhunt 2, has slapped an 18 certificate on the urban free roamer and signalled the green light for it's release, confirms MCV.
If the Anne Diamond interview in the paper is anything to go by, she probably thinks that "Grand Theft Auto-Prologue" was like a lovely gaming experience, like a sunday out driving with the kids, and that "Grand Turismo 4" is a disgraceful, and brutal game full of violence and prostitute killing!!! LOL
now lets see how many parents ignore that & buy it for little jonny's 9th birthday!...
HAHA exactly.Oh i can already see the good Mr.Thompson setting up a sleeping bag outside the American Games Rating Office (whatever they are called) and the USA news on speed dial . . .
I don't think the BBFC would've dared to not give it a certification. Manhunt 2 was one thing.... GTA IV getting banned would've meant a mass march to Soho Square to burn the building down!!
Don't know why anyone would have thought it would be banned; GTA is one of the least violent violent games around. It always has been very cartoony.
the new game isnt cartoony at all though.
Too right. Crackdown wa cartoony, and that style would have suited GTA quite well, but this new ultra-realistic world might yet grow on me. It's certainly overtaken many of GTAIII - VCS's "cartoony" bits.
Kids will always get their hands on the nastiest stuff they can get their hands on. In a way it's part of growing up, the same boundaries you push when you get your grubby hands on your first beers, your first fag, etc...
I've always rubbished the idea of censorship in films, music and games - it doesn't work, and it limits artistic expression. However, I've got to admit that my feelings about violent games are becoming increasingly clouded.
I'm not saying they shouldn't be made - just that we should try to limit the extent to which they end up with kids - last week I found my 7 year old nephew running after his cat, he claimed he had a quest (my brother in-law is playing too much Oblivion).
Consider those filmography: there is a certan amount of violence, but underneath the gore and action, they all have a fairly developed sense of morality. The good guys win, and the bad guys get punished. While this isn't essential in of itself, I'm becoming increasingly concerned about the nihilism behind stuff like GTA.
For all its satire, the appeal of playing Grand Theft Auto is to act like a complete ******* - running over pedestrians, and screwing over missions so you can p**s about setting prostitutes on fire. It's fun, and it's something that you can't (or couldn't) do in other games. I also know when I do this that I'm engaging with the darker sides of my sense of humour - but is a 7 year old capable of doing that?

So, you're saying censorship doesn't work, but we need to censor things? Were you on the Bryon Report?

I suppose you are right, graphically the game certainly is looking as if it is geared towards the realistic far more than the previous engine, but I still think the game will play with tongue firmly in cheek.
That is the concern, the fact the game will have more life like graphics. So the idea of some gormless parent letting there 9 year old son virtualy beat someone into a bloody pulp for a few floating dollars, does not rest easily with me. The fact is there alot of people out there who really should not be parents.
P.s to continue my wii abuse, the wii is made of doggy doo

Well that's all the parent's fault, isn't it? That doesn't mean adults shouldn't be allowed to do it. That's entirely the point of a rating system

Couldn't be more true. You should need to sit a test or something.

I object to that one. The Wii is alright. It's like the nerdy little cousin of the big guns. He'll embarrass you at parties, but chicks will always appreciate what he can do for you
Im sitting on tills at work, hence bored and posting rubbish.
Let's all hope ,xbox and ps3 owners, that the frame rate is consitent. Theres nothing I hate more than s s stutter, more so on the inevatable tough later missions.
P.s the wii is you know like rubbish and its a toy, me and my homies are to mature for it.. bo shakkkaaa

Truth is censorship in any type of media format is mishandled. Developers should make it clear that the game is not suitable for under-age kids. Me, being a father (although my son is still a new-born) am aware of the high mature content in games. However my other's do not and thus where the problem arises.
Retail Gaming shops should be forced NOT TO sell AO games to under-age kids - there should be some sort of citation for those who do. On the other hand, if parents buy AO games to their children (unknowingly) they should be informed by the retailer about the influence such games might have towards children

i couldnt have put it better myself, i know that if it was banned then i would be one of many with a flaming torch and pitch fork outside the bbfc ready to hurt someone.
