We've seem some odd teaser trailers in our time, but the first for THQ's sequel Saints Row 2 really wins the weird - and rubbish - award we've just made up.
Devoid of gameplay and even cinematics, the teaser features dialogue and squiggly black lines against a purple-sun background that eventually forms itself into the Saints Row 2 logo.

Is it, perhaps, some belated April Fool? Join us in our bewilderment by watching the trailer in our video player.
Saints Row 2 developer Volition reckons its gangster sequel will be competitive with GTA IV.
"The only thing I know about GTA is what I've read. From what I've read it seems like they're going in a more realistic direction. For us it's more about almost a hyper-realistic quality, over-the-top, all about these memorable moments", a studio rep said in March.
More than hating this trailer, I hate the way these guys constantly bang on about GTA4 and what they 'think' it'll be.
Fair enough, I'm sure they get asked about it all the time, but they should really just refuse and only talk about their own title.
Not that it'll matter, Saints Row is (and always will be) a poor-mans (or 'Gangsta-chav') GTA - they'll have to do a hell of a lot to get people to think otherwise.....compete with it? - no chance
it's a teaser, not a full-blown trailer. The voice acting is actually kinda good, although the plot sounds the usual s**te. The problem is GTA IV is just around the corner and 'Da Row' just wont be able to compete head-on. Better they wait a few months and promote the game to fans of GTA who are desperate for more. If they then get just 10% of GTA customers they will still have a hit!
The problem with Saints Row and True Crime is that they are both cynical join-the-dots copies of GTA. They imitate the detail without understanding the magic that brings GTA alive. Saying that, I would still be interested in getting Saints Row 2!

there was somethings Saints Row done better than GTA i thought the combat & shooting system was miles better than any GTA, & the Graphics were pretty smart with a great physique engine, but they really should hold off from going head to head with GTA, that's just crazy...
Saints row was most definitely a rip-off, but it was quite a well considered one. Much-needed improvements like free aiming, and subtle changes like not losing your weapons each time you decide to have some fun (rampage) meant it was actually a good game.
I would hold Volition in contempt for their lack of originality, but when you enjoy a game you can't be too mad at the dev!
It's weird hearing Captain Anderson (Mass Effect) talking about drugs and such....very odd picking a voice actor from what will be an established gaming franchise

Im sorry I have to take issue with the attack on true crime. Streets of LA was great and was not a GTA clone. There was a much stronger plot to it i.e not as easy to stray from the story just randomly doing what you wish. The combat was much better in TC and done in a different way to GTA.
I personally really liked streets of LA and really don't care much for GTA games. In the same way I preferred Mafia as well.

Not that odd, Mass Effect took a voice actor straight out Halo. Captain Anderson was The Arbiter.
For me that wasn't a trailer, just a total non-event, but clever as well!
I think it's more a case of them wanting to make sure that everyone knows that their game is also on the horizon and try to ride the coat tails of the GTA hype machine by association.
This reminds me of the spider man movie's opening credits; and they're better than this! I'm hyperventilating over IV at the moment, and have never played Saints Row and this is hardly going to get me hyped. The only thing I would get this for is the customization and co-op.

Yes it was! A sandbox /free-roaming game with missions taking place in a crime ridden city? I know it did some things different but it sounds like a GTA clone to me!
I never played the first True Crime (although I was tempted because it featured Snoop Doggy Dogg). However i did play the second True Crime NYC. It was buggy as hell, boring colours, and just busted. I got a full refund despite the shop having a no refund policy.
At least Mercenaries / Crackdown / Just Cause try to the free-roaming a little bit different.
I enjoyed Saints Row, ok not massively original and in most areas not as good as GTA but still a lot of fun.

Well not odd considering he was in the first Saints Row before he was in Mass Effect and he is reprising the same role.
