PS3's competition has already fired off its big guns and "may have punched themselves out of the fight", says Scott Steinburg, marketing big man at Sony.
A lot has been said of 2008 belonging to PS3 - recent sales have supported the theory - and Steinburg is confident that while PS3 still has many of its best cards to play, the competition has already blown its "big assets".
"Our competition has already leveraged all their big assets in the first couple of years and may have punched themselves out of the fight," he told GamePro.
He talked up the Blu-ray victory and upcoming titles as PS3's key advantages going forward.
"I think [the Blu-ray win] is a huge momentum builder for us and I think it is part of why we believe 2008 is going to be a monster year for the PS3," he said.
"When you incorporate games like Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, and Resistance 2...there will a great mixture of new IP and proven PlayStation brands," added Steinburg.
On another note, he also teased about the likelihood of music and movie downloads on PS3 soon. "We have entertainment leverage and that means music and movies. No other company has that ability or those assets. The PS3 is the hub....you can probably connect the dots. Stay tuned!"
I'll feel alot better when the rest of the years big exclusives are out, things seem to be running a little slowly for my liking, although it is starting to come together.

I have made my choice and I am enjoying my gaming, I couldn't care less who wins...since both companies are making enough money that they won't opt out of the console game for awhile.
This kind of opinion is something I would only take seriously if MS said it because then they would not have something to gain by doing so. This just smells of typical corporate propaganda and an excuse to keep talking about the blu-ray. The problem is that as soon as they mention anything beyond that (like titles) the argument opens up too many points for rebuttal

The only PS3 exclusive game worth playing at the moment on a PS3 is GT Prologue( and thats just half a game because if you then get GT5 youre paying for the same again ), anything else can be played on a 360 or PC or whatever.
Other than that, MGS4 - hmmm, maybe, the series is getting old though, MGS1 was brilliant and innovative and nothjing came close afterwards, in fact the series has become the new Dragons Lair

The PS3 as a hub, Iam not sure yet as it is a bitch to get my ipod to work with it. Where as I can hook it upto my 360 and play the music in any game I want

Same here (I did have fall of man but sold it with my original PS3) the only PS3 game I've got now is Fifa08 and thats cos it was reduced! Apart from a couple of downloaded games as well. My PS3 is usually off and most of my gaming is done on the 360. Until I see a good reason to buy a PS3 title over a 360 title it will stay that way. I really think these execs should just leave the sales to do the talking and not spout more biased crap.

As for the movie download service, I just think the bandwidth required in the UK isnt good enough for that yet and it's likely to be mostly Sony pictures films anyway. People arn't ready to swap DVD/Blu-ray for movie downloads just yet, and neither am I.

the ps3 was due in spring 2006 but due to problems it didnt make it. this means games would have been aimed for this date but held back for the release. this also means games have been in development for over 2 years already on the PS3 so i would expect the ps 3 to be doing better than it is on the games front by now.
i dont own a ps3 and the games due out on it dont tempt me one bit apart from the ones i can also get on other platforms that i do own. this is obviously all down to personal taste but i dont think the ps3 has a better line up than the 360 this year, i think both are a little bit disappointing.

Just counting Xmas 08 because everyone seems to count GT5 as a Sony 'big gun', but it won't be out until 2009.
I agree with you that the first year for any console is a bit ropey (the only thing I ever bought at launch was the PS2, and that was for timesplitters).

One big difrerence between Haze and Killzone 2; killzone's predecessor was rubbish and Free Radical who make Haze actually have a good record with the Timesplitters games. I can understand the hype Haze got but Killzone 2??? why the hype???

I might be a 360 owner but I think he's right about MS shooting themselves in the foot. Their focus on DLC is way too premature, and the world's telecom networks are simply not equipped to deal with that amount of traffic yet. Nor are current storage methods ready for it.

3 years - Xmas 06, Xmas 07, and Xmas 08 - all before GT5 is out. While the PS3 wasn't released over here during Xmas 06, it was in America.
Have people actually seen how poorly MGS sells outside of Japan? While it's a good franchise, it tends to be the hardcore's who stick with it. MGS3 for example only shifted 3.7m units in a year (on a console which had shifted 4x as many units as the 360)... Halo 3 shifted 2.45m in a day. In January, Halo 3 had sold 8.1m (source: http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6184291.html).
Why Sony seem to think their franchises are bigger is beyond me. The money in the console war is made from software royalties - the bigger the console attach rate, the better. Until Sony can catch up with that (or pull out an enormous lead with hardware), they can't really claim to be victorious!undefined
sony should have a great year, from march all the way until xmas thay have a top game and most will be exclusive.
march gave us GT5, demo or not this the best racing game out, in april we all get GTA4. may and sony get haze which will get scores around 8.3 - 8.8 so a really good game.
june = MGS4/online, i've seen many preview's over the last few days, and from the graphics to story to weapons to new ideas, everyone who finished it has been absolutely blown away by this game.
add to the mix all the other games like 8 days, heavy rain, ( which will get a big E3 push) then you have momentum for 09, GT5, FF, GOW 3, getaway, all these secret games that get talked about.
xmas 09 will define who really is the king of the current gen.

It get immaute, i think the bragging time is when PS3 passes 360 sales. I kind of agree with what he has said, the 360 has released a lot too easrly but that meant there will be sequels, it still has a good line-up. I suppose sequels sell software more than hardware but it is still good games coming through. Sony does have a good year ahead though, regardless of who is interested in MGS and Home, LittleBigPlanet, Haze etc. they do have a bit of hype around them. 2009 for Sony though seems better to be honest, from September 2008 onwards really :S
If Microsoft bombed the way Sony did, releasing it a year late, even more in Europe, it would have gone the same way as the Xbox, maybe worse. Whereas the PS3 is geting better, it shows the support people are showing for the name Sony. The Consoles are selling on name alone aren't they. Sony aren't doing too badly for themselves at all this generation, considering there are only three types of people who are buying their hardware:
A) Fools who value brand-names more than substance, B) Blu-Ray early adopters, and C) Bitter X360 owners who gave up after chronic RROD attacks.
As soon as they build up a solid library of (full) games, we should have a proper two-horse race on our hands. I reckon 2009 should see the PS3 finally come into it's own.

I know it has been outselling the other 2. Its just really what is meant to be so great about mario games? Why am I making s**t up? Im only going on what ive read & what people I speak to say.
Ive read loads of articles that say PS3 sales are the same, if not ahead of the 360 on a month to month basis apart from America. The fact its managed this even though ATM the 360 games library is easily superior & the PS3 has no outstanding games yet, whereas the 360 has a few. I think this shows how strong the PS brand name is.
Also my mates that are casual gamers still arent contemplating getting a 360 even after I told them I think its the better console. Playstation is the console name they know & its the one they are going to buy & no matter what I say they have their mind made up.
I dont know about Sony shooting its mouth off at this stage. THus far we haven't seen anything that really blew up hardware sales for the PS3. GTA4 and MGS4 and the next FF install will have to pass before they can say where they are at. Granted how big of a lead Nintendo has over everyone else worldwide, it'd take at least 2 years of PS3 sales at its current trend and ZERO Wii sales in that same time period, which we all know isn't going to happen.
I can't forsee anything that would change things as they are. The Ps3 might take 2nd place in the sales rankings of current gen systems, under the Wii, due to the lack of sales in Japan for the XB360. I think that the US will see XB360 sales surpassing the PS3 sales, and Europe will be the tiebreaker between the two systems, for who gets 2nd and 3rd place.

- PS3 is the most officially open platform seen on any games console.
- PS3 provides the best value technology available.
- PS3 will win 2008 and 2009.
- RROD, expired warranties will ensure the 360's continued demise.
- Release dates for Home, "in game XMB", WipEout HD and GT5 all before printed here.
- PS3 prices would drop by end of March (and indeed are now Ł279 from Ł299).

i own both consoles and both have fair advantages like the ps3s browser and free online play but the 360 has a greater variety of games and better online play. but if you take into account the 1 year and 11 months headstart the 360 got over the ps3, then obviously its going to have a better line up of games due to inpatient developers who would not wait for the ps3s release to release their games.
in fact, if the ps3 had been released the same day as the 360, gears of war, mass effect, bioshock and many others would also be on ps3 right now, but microsoft seduced those developers with alot of $$$ so that they would make them exclusive to the 360. and all sony could do was sit back and watch as games flowed onto 360 while their console was still in development
Come on Lord PS3, give us a taste of your superior gaming taste and wisdom.

ps3 release price = $600 xbox 360 release price = $500 if you add on the $200 for the hd-dvd drive then the 20-60 dollars for subscription that gives a total of $760, an extra $160 dollars for the full 360 experience, but hi def playback comes standard, free online play and a much more reliable system
On another note, he also teased about the likelihood of music and movie downloads on PS3 soon. "We have entertainment leverage and that means music and movies. No other company has that ability or those assets.
If only Microsoft offered a music & film download service. Oh! wait - they do. Has Sony been sticking their collective heads in the sand?
I was going to write soemthing to that effect.
Also this SONY marketing guy is effectively saying "Yeh we didn't really bother to get good games and features out, we prefer to make our customers wait." Yes I said it the Wword Playstation fans know all too well.
With the Ps3 and XBox 360 both doing relatively poorly and the Wii running off with an (In my opinion undeserved) victory, im set for the next-gen, collectively this generation has done what Microsoft have done with the 360 in the too much-too soon sense.
I bought a PS3 just over a week ago with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Devil May Cry 4. Devil May Cry 4 has hardly been played yet as Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is such a good game. It looks beautiful.
I don't have an Xbox 360 or a Wii but I disagree that, as far as my tastes go, 2008 is Sony's year. Rare remain a distinctive feather in the Xbox360's cap with the next Banjo game.
