Can Fallout 3 be as jaw-droppingly a good an achievement as Oblivion? Actually, stuff that, will it be EVEN better than Bethesda's fantasy RPG? Well, that's what we're obviously hoping.
Fallout 3's still a fair few months off, but in the meantime new screenshots that have leaked onto the internet have got lots of folks very excited. View them for yourself, in particular the last one of the batch that shows the pinpoint-limbs-for-destruction combat system in the game.
"The release date is Fall 2008. Until you see something official from us on when the game will be out, take any date you see from anyone with large grains of salt", Bethesda's Pete Hines told us in March about release timings for the sequel.
Can someone explain to me what's so exciting about this game?
A real response, not a crap 'It'll be the most beautiful game ever' type thing.
Have you played Fallout 1 and 2? That's what is exciting about this game. Plus the fact that it will look absolutely awesome and looks like it will have lots of atmosphere. Maybe take STALKER, keep it's atmosphere, but add humour, and less seriousness. And extend it to a full RPG.
Most people who have played Fallout 1 and 2 list it in their all time favourite games, and they do so with a good reason.
I'm sure the atmosphere, story telling and gameplay will be just grand. But I have no idea why people are practically having heart attacks over those images.
If this were any other game, everbybody would be making Wii jokes. These screenshots are the single worst things I've seen all year. Even if you ignore all of the horrendous jaggies, the textures arent on par with today's games, and the bump mapping is just over the top.
The enemy in the first picture is also the most generic thing this side of the year 2000.

I dont think we looked at the same set of images. They looked great as far as I'm concerned. The single worst thing I have seen this year is your spreading for 10p
You should hear all these die hard fall out fans on gamespot. All they do is just take the game and its developers down a peg none stop. I think it will be a brilliant game.

Its from the guys who did Oblivion. Nuff said
That's the crap kind of response I didn't want.
To be fair, thats all that needs to be said. Bethesda make awesome games, just like rockstar make awesome games and Bioware make awesome games. In a way, its another oblivion and that is what people want. They want the huge open world, and the huge amounts of hours you can play this single player game for.
So hes right "its the guys who did Oblivion. Nuff said."

Couldn't agree more. We all have certain Devs' that we trust to produce quality games - anyone capable of Oblivion is up there in anyones book. I've never played the first two games, but Bethesda being behind it is what caught my interest.
I also agree that the screens we've been shown are looking very impressive, there's still a long way to go before release.
Definitely another game worth getting excited about
There are always lots of people who want to distinguish themselves, when someone talks about something that everyone likes. Many people pretend to not like what's popular. I say "pretend" because many people hate something without actually getting to know it first. I do the same thing myself. I bash all consolles and treat them as inferior whenever I can, when I have barely played one! It is a matter of a childish principle.
So you have people who played Fallout 1 and 2 and never considered it particularly good. And people who have never played the game and therefore don't understand the hype about it. And those people don't see what many Fallout fans see, which is fine. It afterall is a matter of taste.
Fallout 3 is for Fallout 1 and 2 fans primarily. THOSE are the people who reply with statements that this game will be awesome, because it will, and they are right. Imagine a game that came out ten years ago, you played it then, and it has been in your heart ever since. And suddenly, ten years later it ressurects in a new form, which as so far presented by Bethesda looks fresh, beautiful, new, exciting, atmospheric. If anything, people are curious as how it will be. Most fans expect enchanted awesomeness from first and second Fallout. Of course there are (old schoolers) pessimists, but they aren't the focus here..

It wasn't said well no, but to be honest, that's a valid response. The Elder Scrolls series is amazing, (and Fallout 1 and 2 are meant to be, i don't know).
If they're that good at RPG games, surely Fallout 3 will be amazing, it isn't as though these guys release loads of games every year.
The screens look amazing too-and the trailer was awesome

I strongly disagree. Of the people who have played Fallout 1 and 2, everyone I know personally, and many people I see talking online have grave misgivings about Fallout 3. Mainly it's because a lot of people don't see Oblivion as much of an RPG--more of an action/adventure game with some RPG elements tossed in for good measure. It also had a crappy story and crappy writing. I though Oblivion was fun, but for VERY different reasons than I thought that Fallout 1 and 2 were fun. I'm worried that Bethesda are going to murder my favorite franchise. I'm sure I'll buy the game, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but it won't be Fallout. And considering that I've been waiting 10 years for a good Fallout sequel, I think that it's a damn shame.
So, I disagree that Fallout 3 is for people that enjoyed Fallout 1 and 2. I think it's for people that enjoy Bethesda's games which are extremely different from (the late, RIP) Black Isle's games.
Edit: I have a laundry list of things that seem wrong with Fallout 3, including, but not limited to, rape of Fallout's storyline, dumbing down of a very intellectual game, poor/ill fiting sense of humor, and tons of smaller things like making ghouls and super mutants exclusively mindless killers, which is SO far from how they used to be. I'm not going to go on here, because I don't want to write an essay. But if you're interested in the non-Bethesda fanboy point of view (i.e., the Black Ilse fanboy point of view), then check out nma-fallout.com
At the very least the atmosphere of the game seems quite intact but that depends if they can match the music of the first two games ( arguabley some of most relevant music ever for a game ), I'm very sure the game will play brilliantly. How close to the original formula however will have to be left up till the final game is played. I would say Bestheda are definetly more on the right track than the wrong one.
Anyway, these shots made my install Fallout 2 again for another run through
YOU havent played Fallout 1,2? Whats stopping you when they're so cheap!!!

It is pretty the opposite for me and all the people I know personally, who are fans of old Fallouts. All of them are psyched about this. We also loved Oblivion, but we await Fallout 3 most because we believe that it will be awesome as a successor to 1 and 2, and not because of Oblivion.
So what I wonder about is, why does everyone expect it to be like Oblivion? I haven't followed any developer blogs or anything like that, so I don't know what precisely has been said about the game. The only simmilarity it has with Oblivion as I can see, is that it will be open-ended. Which was what Fallout 1 and 2 were. Well, okay, it will be first person as Oblivion was, but it is merely a change of point of view. Why expect it to be like Oblivion?
I remember I read that person working on it were long-time Fallout fans, so I would expect maximum Fallout 1 and 2 experience put into their work.

Now, this man knows what he's talking about.
Fallout 3 would not be receiving the immense bashing that it is in some corners of the internet if Bethesda had simply made this game with no reference to Fallout.
Sure, it looks like a fun post-apocalyptic role player, but is it Fallout? No.
Quite why Bethesda bought the Fallout licence only to rip out everything "Fallout" (except for the most shallow aspects - Vault Boy, the Brotherhood of Steel etc) is beyond me. Surely the name "Fallout" has no value to the vast majority of Fallout 3's intended audience.
Now, I'm not saying this will be a bad game - far from it. But as Enasni said, it's made for fans of Bethesda games, not fans of Fallout 1 and 2.
I remember I read that person working on it were long-time Fallout fans, so I would expect maximum Fallout 1 and 2 experience put into their work.
Strangely, in the latest staff interviews (on Bethesda's website) of the Bethesda employees working on Fallout 3, the question "have you played Fallout 1 & 2?" hasn't been asked, although it was included in the first interviews. Perhaps because the answer was all too often "no"...
What will make this awesome for me is if they release a 'construction set' like they did for Oblivion and Morrowind. Without the CS I would have found Oblivion to be an alright game, but not amazing (though my new graphics card which comes today may change that opinion - I'm shallow )
If they do release a CS, then it will be possible for dedicated fallout fans to fix any perceived differences. The various mods for Oblivion have more than tripled the amount I would have played the game without them.
