The first details on the massively anticipated Gears of War sequel have emerged in Game Informer. Here are the best bits.
Gears of War 2, the mag reveals, kicks off six months after the events that finished the first game. "We want to fulfil the promise - it is a war," senior producer Rod Fergusson told GI.
"In order to save Jacinto, they have no choice but to take the war to the Locust," Fergusson continues. "They're going to push back and go underground, and bring the battle to them."
How your character is placed behind cover has been retouched, so that it's harder to get hit while protected. Active reloads are also in and not dramatically altered (for the old guns anyway, says GI) and new chainsaw duals are promised to ramp the gore right up.
Game Informer says, "Unlike the sometimes cramped and linear subterranean paths from the first game, the cavern complex is vast and breathtaking. Branching levels and open spaces give players true tactical choices as they decide which way to tackle an assault. Whatever path you choose, bio-luminescent plants light the faces of the new Locust Kantus enemies.
"These monk-like devils hum low and droning chants that can be focused into sonic attacks against you. They wield weapons like the new Gorgon burst pistol and poison grenades, both of which can become part of your arsenal if you play your cards right. However, the Kantus' true danger lies in their ability to revive their fallen bretheren from afar. Where before you could rest easy after taking down an enemy soldier, now there is the constant danger of them rising back up to continue to fight.
"The only alternative is to brave the hail of gunfire to break through enemy ranks and kill the Kantus sulking in the rear. Along the way, you may not have access to stable cover anymore, so you'll have to make do with the moving kind. Massive Locust rock worms will emerge from the cavern walls during battle, guided by the Kantus' chanting. Luckily, the creatures are so large you can hide behind them as they sliter about, and you too will be able to guide them to an advantageous firing position."
Expectedly, the new Unreal Engine 3 tech shown off at GDC 2008, including Ambient occlusion, soft body physics and the ability to put hundreds of enemies on screen at once, is indeed lined up for the sequel.
"We have creatures that make the Brumak look like a baby panda bear," Cliff Bleszinski says in the mag.
Epic promises at darker, "more heartfelt" narrative this time around, with novelist Joshua Ortega brought on for scribing duties. Forced walking scenes that masked loading times have been replaced with a dynamic conversation camera system, but the player is still in control. There's also a 'shut up' button to skip straight to the action.
There's also a cast of new characters (though Baird and Cole will appear later on in the story), including (in Game Informer's words):
Tai Kaliso: "The most memorable of these new additions may be Tai, a spiritual and meditative warrior from a tradition of honor-bound fighters."
Chairman Prescott: "Lots of gamers found themselves wondering if Marcus' domineering superior officer was the head of the human government. It turns out that Hoffman is only second in command. Above him stands the Chairman."
Dizzy: "A hardened soldier who drives the massive Derrick on which Delta Squad ascends into the mountains. With a trademark drawl and an insistence on calling his truck 'Betty', he's a colourful new addition to the cast."
Maria Santiago: "When Emergence Day struck, Dom's wife Maria became a victim as surely as if she had died in that first attack. On that day, her children were killed."
Multiplayer details are being kept mostly under wraps at this point, although Game Informer hints that the co-op modes in Gears 2 have been "dramatically expanded", with multiple save files and the ability for players to set "individual" difficulty modes (so one player can play on hardcore, while his partner toddles on causal).
One thing that does sound wicked though is the COG Centaur tank, which is described as "a monster truck mixed with a military tank". Awesome.
Sounds remarkable. Watch the tech demo in Marketplace if you haven't already seen it, that made me want this game even more if possible![
I have seen the demo already,it makes me think about the Ps3,isnt it supposed to be more powerful than the 360 and when are we going to see a game that shows this off?
Sounds great. The introduction of the 'Locust Kantus' is a good idea as you won't be able to sit back and pick off grubs one-by-one anymore. Couple that with 'expanded' (got to be four player surely?) multiplayer, and you've got masses more tactical depth to the game.
If Epic make sure to tack on a big slice of multiplayer awesome, like last time, with a longer single-player campaign (and more enemies wouldn't hurt either), then this will have MASSIVE WIN written all over it this Xmas.
This will be one game where the hype transcends actual good quality gameplay. The first game was good, but not as good as many would have you believe.
...but doesn't that apply to every big game ever released? Lots of people are already equating GTAIV to 'The Second Coming', but it clearly won't be the perfect game because nothing ever is.
If you felt short-changed by GOW then you probably don't have XboxLive for the co-op/multiplayer. I can see why people might be less enthusiastic if they didn't have it online.

PS3 designed to be media hub, 360 designed to be games console. More powerful? Both consoles have their strong points. I thought that'd been established yonks ago!

Unlike Sony would have you believe, 360 and PS3 and on near level terms when it comes to hardware power which each excelling in certain areas. MGS4 was supposed to be the game to show off PS3's power but just look at that...
Back on topic, really looking forward to this game. Hopefully PS3 and Wii also have a game of this magnitude and quality lined up for the end of the year.
What an awful edit of the Maria Santiago bit of the article. It should read:
Maria Santiago: When Emergence Day struck, Dom's wife Maria became a victim as surely as if she had died in that first attack. On that day, her children were killed. Unable to deal with the shock and loss, Maria lost herself in the ruins of civilization. For Dominic, who joined the COG to protect his family, no priority is higher than to retrieve his lost love - his very personal quest to find her is a major part of the story that unfolds in Gears 2.
Which makes a lot more sense than what you lot have chopped it down to.

Calm yourself. Going postal isn't going to get you very far in life.
I don't understand what Epic are trying to do. It looks like they've changed the viewpoint to more like a first-peron shooter, and have completely messed up by setting this new one in the future instead of ancient Greece.
How can Kratos live for 2000 years? I mean that doesn't even look like him anymore. I feel short changed.

Actually, Pete's right, to a very small degree.
Sony's parsing of their RAM really has hamstrung them, and while the Cell processor is great, the fact that there's no memory dedicated to the processor means that it has to waste/dedicate CPU cycles for info that can easily be retained on the 360.
Add to that the fact that while there's a software solution for the RAM issue Sony created, it too takes up CPU cycles. That's why ports have been less-than-stellar on the PS3 unless they're created for the system from the ground up (CoD 4), and even then, there are other issues to take into account that make PS3 ports (lack of quality online play) less-than-stellar. Also, when @ Home comes out for the PS3, that's going to eat up CPU cycles and RAM that developers have needed if it is indeed the PS3's answer to the 360 Dashboard. The 360 at least planned for the dedicated RAM and CPU cycles for the dashboard from the beginning, and people are able to work around those constraints w/o any problems. Sony's now taking away resources from folks that have only been able to create on-par (at best) ports as compared to the 360, despite the superior processing power of the PS3--now, that's going to put developers further behind the proverbial 8-ball.
Yeah, the PS3 has the better core processor, and the 360 has the better graphics processor, but the memory issue, @ Home additions, and lack of planning on the Sony side of things really has hamstrung them this gen.
Considering the reports out of Sony that the development teams didn't even consult the entertainment teams at Sony thanks to Ken, perhaps it's no wonder Ken got a 'window seat' the way he did.

Smite me, oh mighty smiter!!!
Pull your head out of your bottom you twit. I'm not personally slagging anyone off!! It's a fecking game and doesn't have feelings!! And truth be told, I actually prefered Resistance 1 (online and off) to GOW. So there. More fun. Yes. Fun.
I've started taking emoticon patches. I tried the chewing gum but it didn't help. 'Tis why I am going off on one today. I miss the little buggers. That smile. Sob.

You prefered Resistance to GoW? You must be a lunatic mate, I had both (but sold Resistance with my PS3) and resistance honestly doesn't touch GoW, admittedly the levels in the jeep are quite good but the rest of the game on the whole was very poor.
Fanboys are bottomholes but Sony fanboys really take the p**s!

Careful! You'll have Paradaz typing out an essay furiously on his PC.
Oh wait, he's probably saving that for Resistance 2, Haze or MGS 4, or sommat. You know he's a tad fickle about his consoles.
Jeez, can't you guys accept other people have different opinions to you.
IMO Gears sucks.
The offline mode was good at first, then it got more and more average.
Online. Full of snooker cues, But what Big online game isn't. Maps not varied, all feel 'samey'. Not enough people alowwed in each games. Also No respawn except in annexx (I Think its called that, Can't remember Ain't played it in ages TBH)
The Game Had absolutely NO weapon strategy. Every weapon feels the same. Shotgun can reach a ridiculous range. n00b style reloading (Or Active reloads)and teh n00b abused
The Only decent thing about Gears was the cover mechanic. Which Got boring after a while ( I Mean, really repetitive and s**tt) As the game broke down into Throwing s**t (Bombs etc) Shooting (Which all feels the same between weapons) running, and tking cover.
Let's face it without the cover mechaninc Gears would Be the s**ttest thing Since EA.
Someone was comparing it with resistance earlier. Which Is fair.
Resistance Is a solid game, With good weapon strategy (Not amazing, But not bad) Pretty good story, And good varied gameplay. Everything is good, Not amazing, But Good.
Gears has s**te weapon strategy, crap story, NO STORY, And average gameplay.
You need to wise Up, the Cover mechanic holds gears together. Not a solid game at all.
Jeez, can't you guys accept other people have different opinions to you.

Sure we accept other people have opinions, but usually they just say "I don't like the game" and don't spurt out a load of jealous bulls**t like you just have. If you don't like the game just feckin' say it! Leave the obvious fanboy crap at the door.

Gears online play is better than resistance, but the 1 player i put Resistance there!
Either way though there 2 different games! Resistance is a FPS and Gears is a 3rd person with duck and cover???? Just because both are about the world been over taken doesnt make them a match!
Jeez, can't you guys accept other people have different opinions to you.

Annex no resporn??? Hmmm funny you get a respawn after 15 Seconds? The other games you wait till the round is over??? and full of snooker cues? Well i guess you never learnt the mute function? Or used Underground mode?
The Game Had absolutely NO weapon strategy. Every weapon feels the same. Shotgun can reach a ridiculous range. n00b style reloading (Or Active reloads)and teh n00b abused
You need to try something other than Casual mode!
The Only decent thing about Gears was the cover mechanic. Which Got boring after a while ( I Mean, really repetitive and s**tt) As the game broke down into Throwing s**t (Bombs etc) Shooting (Which all feels the same between weapons) running, and tking cover.
Please name me a game that doesnt get repetitive towards the end? most games are throwing s**t, Shooting, Running and Covering?

I think you need to play gears again buddy. and try it again with some peeps on your friends list online.
Looking forward to this. I really enjoyed the first even though I dont think it deserves anywhere near the amount of praise it gets. But thats same with all games these days I find. Except CoD4
Aw, the little xboxers are all excited! Do you want to shooty-wooty some little locusts? Bless.
Thats a little rich coming from some one who was almost crying when people started to dismiss PS3 "shooty-wooty" game Haze the other week!
Haze is more focused towards adults, rather than pre-pubesant teens. Did-ums.
I spat coffee over my monitor thanks to that! Ah brilliant...
If I wrote something like that, I'd feel like a right c**t.
You're not wrong there fella. I believe it was only a day or so ago that Mark was "desperate to shake off this fanboy stigma I seem to have".
I don't think his current strategy is having the desired effect.
An opinion does not make you a fanboy, does it? You are all beginning to sound like little girls. Little girls trying to pick on somebody who doesn't like what they like. Pathetic. If I upset short-sighted morons like you, then so be it. Good job my REAL friends don't have a go at me because I don't like their style of music.

You're quite right, having an opinion does not make you a fanboy. However, comments along the lines of;
"Aw, the little xboxers are all excited! Do you want to shooty-wooty some little locusts? Bless."
...clearly do make you a fanboy. We can take a vote on it if you like, but I think you might be disappointed.

Ha. Get a sense of humour, laddie! In previous posts you will notice that I respect the GOW game. I'm having a pop at the fanboys, like yourself, who get all upset at the silliest things. Honestly. You want to listen to yourselves sometimes in the PS3 related threads. Trying to section me out is tantamount to cyberbullying. Grow up.

My sense of humour is fine thanks. If you're trying to go for a bit of 'fanboy baiting' then you didn't do a great job - your comments came across like Sony-flavoured jealousy.
I am neither a fanboy nor am I upset. I merely pointed out that your comments were massively childish (as did Bosker), and if you were trying to be ironic (which I doubt) then you failed. You're sectioning yourself out with those comments mate, it's not me. If you prefer Resistance over GoW then that's fine, but playground style comments don't help the discussion.

Ok. So can you explain why i'd be jelous of a game, which, due to reasons explained above, I Don't like and I Could easily get ahold of. Yes guess what, Some people Don't Liek teh same things as You.
You have to face that without the cover mechanic Gears would be nothing. Anyone that denies this is a fool or a /\/00ß
Now You stick to "Shoot, duck, run shoot, repeat" and I'll play Story driven epics Like MGS, New things like home, Shooters likekillzone and resistance, racers like GT and ridge racer anf fun new concepts like BBP.
