'Guitar Hero perverted my song', says musician

Tells parents to take a serious look at the images in the game
Charlie Daniels, the writer and musician responsible for 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia,' has hit out against Guitar Hero 3 for perverting the meaning of his music.

"[The song] is supposed to be a lighthearted novelty about a fiddling contest between a country boy and the devil and the devil always loses," Daniels posted on his personal website.

"That is not the case with the Guitar Hero version which comes complete with a horned, guitar-playing devil who battles the player and very often wins."

Daniels, who lost the rights to the song in a settlement with a former partner, is apparently upset about the inclusion of a graphical devil on song 42 whom players have to battle in a rock-hard face-off.

"This game looks innocent enough," Daniels states, "but if you have a child who is playing it, take the time to sit with him or her while they're playing along and take a serious look at the images on the screen. You may be surprised at the world they're being exposed to."

We would like to offer our thoughts on the devil in GH3, but we haven't got there yet. Knights of Cydonia is still kicking our arses.

Oh, for goodness' sake. I mean, really.

That is the weakest complaint I think I've ever heard.
csdaveuk on 8 Apr '08
I don't know what he's talking about. GH3 made me hate the devil more; I just can't beat the f**ker.
thedonkeyman on 8 Apr '08
That is really pathetic. Get a grip for Godsake!
mfnick on 8 Apr '08
Oh, I get it. Singing about the devil and making little CGI pics of him are entirely different somehow. No? Then maybe it's the fact that they've replaced violins with guitars? No, you're right, that doesn't seem inherently 'perverted' either.

That must mean that it's perverted for little boys not to automatically win in musical contests against the devil taking place somewhere outside Georgia...

I don't get it

Oh! Maybe it's the fact that he's bitter about not getting any cash for his song, maybe that could be it?
dweebosh on 8 Apr '08
Just who, while they're playing Guitar Hero 3 has time to look at all the pretty images on screen anyway? I bet the kid had bareley even noticed what it was until his self-rightous Dad drew his attention to it

PMSL, that just made my day, My GF and I went to bed last night....defeated... by Knights of Cydonia on Medium!Despite numerous attempts and practicing the last sections! Dammit
frichie79 on 8 Apr '08
I'll be sure to look out for the Devil when I fly to Georgia in the next couple of weeks Mr. Green
kimoak on 8 Apr '08
Come on, the devil, without redeption, is a popular theme in country and blues music. Think the Crossroads, for Cliffs sake.

Even if it was meant lightheartedly, the idea behind the song is clearly working on a popular theme in the genre, which is partly the reason for its popularity.

So what you have is a musician using a popular theme to sell records (hardly original), and a Corporation using that music, contemporising this popular theme to sell video games.

And just to get a little up my own bottom, I would also point out Roland Barthes "death of the author" as a worth while text. (Although I do fundamentally disagree with it - it would be sufficient to win the argument in court Razz)

However, despite this I still support the musician, I could never support a corporation over a person - otherwise I would be selling my soul to the devil. Also a cruicially, I think this may be a slow news day because all the guy is saying is I don't like the Guitar Hero interpretation - its wrong. Fair enough, move on.

I'd never even heard of his (his, but not in a legal sense, ouch) song if it wasnt for GH3?.......sorry, whats the devil got to do with it again??...
hollywood111 on 8 Apr '08
And the award for the lamest anti-game complaint ever goes to.........
Knights of Cydonia is a real bitch, it took me a while to beat and i am a proficient guitarist, my heart goes out to you all. Keep practicing is my advice.
wudragon on 8 Apr '08
STFU ALREADY! f**king sad bastards now a days got nothing better to do except blame the games industry for all there blamings as a parent.
topguy4 on 8 Apr '08
Knights of Cydonia is really tough, having struggled through it on Medium, I'm stuck on the Hard one now...doh!

Started working on Hard now but theres a huge jump in difficulty just cos of that extra fret!!
Ragon on 8 Apr '08
I'm up to Slayer - Rain in Blood and Metallica - One on hard. Can't beat either of them Sad. done all the rest on hard though
SeriousBenny on 8 Apr '08
He's just p**sed off because he can't beat it on medium Laughing
Eyhren on 8 Apr '08
I remember the battle with Lou being quite tricky even on Easy
frichie79 on 8 Apr '08
I still can't beat the devil on hard, after 3 months of trying! And as for expert, I'm stuck on the Slipknot/Disturbed bracket of songs.
freaky_seb on 8 Apr '08
And as for expert, I'm stuck on the Slipknot/Disturbed bracket of songs.

mfnick on 8 Apr '08
They should have used to hell with the devil by stryper instead ha oh wait no christian metal is evil on so many levels
hayisforhorses on 8 Apr '08
Wait. George Bush went down to Georgia? When? Was he trying to conscript more troops for his worthless war?

Very Happy

I got stuck on that cult of personality song for ages on easy, with it being an encore, I couldn't skip it. Once I got past it though I ran into raining blood, which it took me 3 months to beat. I had finished medium before I could beat slayer on easy. Still, great song. Should have been angel of death though!
jubbgi01 on 8 Apr '08
I can't beat Raining Blood on expert, its a bitch! Oh and has anyone managed to get 4 stars or more on Through The Fire And The Flames on hard? I can get about 220K (if i remember correctly) but it just isn't enough to get 4 stars!
MightyMoose on 8 Apr '08
I'm onto this song on Expert, can't say I have the time to look at anything in the background! Knights Of Cydonia is easier on Expert than it is on Hard, IMO. Only tough song on Expert was Raining Blood.
citizenerasedx on 8 Apr '08
Actually he's wrong Cuz If you actually play the game well then you beat the devil.

Just p**sed He didn't make any money I Think.

The Wife beat the devil first go the other night (is there a sexual euphemysm in there?) Although we were playing on easy.

Tried some of the earlier songs on medium though and it kicked our asses!

I knew there was a reason I learnt bass guitar in my earlier days. Far less buttons/strings. Wink
Cpt.VonTrapp on 9 Apr '08
Does anyone not have this game??

See when we're talking about beating a song do we mean just getting through it or getting 4 stars?
Ragon on 9 Apr '08
Expert = pwned Very Happy Minimum of 4 stars on every song.
Sorry to gloat, just had to get it in, lol!
