Sonic Unleashed "has no relation" to Sonic 360/PS3

Sonic Team cuts ties early with the last, badly received Hedgehog adventure
Worried about the next, decent looking game in the Sonic series, Sonic Unleashed? Why wouldn't you be? The last game on Xbox 360 and PS3 was after all, absolute pap.

Reassuringly, the game's lead designer Yoshihisa Hashimoto at Sonic Team has cut ties with the badly received last adventure, telling our on-off friends at Official Nintendo Magazine (they've stopped lending us Wii Remotes) that Sonic Unleashed "has no relation" with the last game.

"As a development team, we originally started off this project planning to create Sonic Adventure 3", Hashimoto revealed to the magazine. "In our minds, this game will have more in common with the older Sonic Adventure series. It has no relation to Sonic the Hedgehog [on PS3/Xbox 360] or Sonic and the Secret Rings".

Sonic Unleashed, he went on, has been developed from scratch and "will purely be Sonic's new product. Of course, players will still be able to enjoy Sonic's symbolic actions such as Spin attack and Homing Attack".

The new game, which will be receiving versions on both Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3, looks like a long, long awaited return to speed-based platforming - well, apart from the fact that at night Sonic turns into a werehog.

In this form he's "a slightly slower and yet more agile beast. Where Sonic dodges past obstacles, Were-Sonic manhandles them out of the way and can toss enemies around like nobody's business", Official Nintendo Magazine explains. He also traverses levels by swinging on overly-long arms instead of running.

Official Nintendo Magazine's full interview with Yoshihisa Hashimoto and an extensive exclusive preview of Sonic Unleashed can be read in its new issue, #29, which hits your local newsagent this Friday.

I don't mind the sound of it... after all, erm...

"Insert reassuring, yet witty observation"

Dude, i totally agree with you. They always have to add some stupid other factor in to it.
Why cant they get it through their heads, that Sonic is about SPEED!! Loads of it!
Look at the Rush series on DS, that was a pretty good return to form.. dunno about the music in those games, but the gameplay was clean and simple like the old ones.

Im willing to bet that they will include some 'new' lame character into this as well...

I agree. I read slower and thought "Wow, we'll actually get a good Sonic game now". Then i read the rest :S

And Sonic was about speed before they made him too fast. Sonic is not about speed totally though. He was a good speedo n the MegaDrive, a speed where you enjoyed the game, yet could tell what you were doing and enjoy the levels. He is now way too fast. Sonic Rush was crap too, doublt screen, too fast.

2d gameplay mechanics should hopefully save this!

Sonic Adventure was awesome IMO though!
RobW on 9 Apr '08
As has been said, I think it needs to go back to a 2D plane. Sonic's 1 and 2 have been one of the few platform games I've actually enjoyed.

Ahh yes I used to be a Sega Fanboy before the PS1, which signaled the beginning of the end for Sega Hardware.
I disliked Ninty then, still do now.

How about the Sony/Sega Playstation 4, imagine the controller the hardware and the exclusive software..... SmileIdea

The PS2 hype is what killed the greatest console ever - Dreamcast. Ill never forgive Sony for that (yet i still buy all their s**t Rolling Eyes ).

I would rather have seen Sega been bought by MS and MS use them to brand the xbox with in Japan, reform all their studios and get back to making great games on a single piece of hardware.

Unfortunately Sammy got their claws into them and the Sega we used to know and love is dead, along with any hope of seeing Shenmue 3.

No I have to agree with the sega fanboys....

I was reading the article and, (for once), was about to finish reading the article thinking, "wow nothing retarded has been reported here".

But no..... there's 'always' something...

wtf is this? were-sonic? what happened to, "in our mind, this game will have more in common with the old adventure series"

It's like you're reading an article on like Halo 4, (I know, I know, just for arguments sake guys).

"Yeah, we have decided to go back to the roots of what really made Halo, Halo. We've decided to completely disregard Halo 3...... BUT THIS TIME YOU CAN TRANSFORM INTO A WASHING MACHINE.... WITH NUKES!!!"

It just leaves you with the same, "Wtf...?" feeling : /

Disclaimer: I don't actually care because I never intend or plan on buying another Sonic game for the remainder of my life. I learned something with "classic" games. There's a reason why people generally don't make sequels, or at least sequels worth mentioning, to them...

I hear what you're saying, but my faith keeps being slightly restored every time I read something new about this game. It could be a welcome return to form for my beloved childhood hero.

I'm hoping this new were-form for Sonic, will be like the various forms Mario can take - fire, racoon, frog, etc. Could work really well.

I'm definitely looking forward to this new Sonic game anyway!

I was thinking that too, but sadly Sega have yet to prove that they can pull off the kind of diversity with Sonic that Nintendo have with Mario. A racoon Sonic would probably just suck!

I also agree with a comment elsewhere on the thread that Sonic games have got too fast. You always had control over the speed on the traditional 2D games. From the Adventure series onward the games always seem to take control off you once you get to a fast part.

The first time I noticed this was the (admittedly cool-looking) killer whale sequence on Sonic Adventure. Since then, sliding down rails, being chased by trucks, snowboarding; they're all interesting ways of conveying speed but still lack the feeling of belting around Chemical Plant Zone like a nutter.
Mappman on 10 Apr '08

I agree with that statement - I found I'd have no time to avoid or attack enemies in most of the levels on Sonic Rush because it just seemed much faster than the 90s. I know you can learn the levels for enemy positions, but you shouldn't have to.
